  • Patent number: 9021706
Abstract: A method of manufacturing large diameter tapered roller bearing cages includes beginning with a metal strip, coil or plate of cage blank material and feeding it into a rolling mill. The rolling mill includes a pair of unparallel forming rolls disposed to define a wedge-shaped gap therebetween. As the cage blank material is fed through the wedge-shaped gap, one lateral side of the cage blank material is plastically deformed to reduce its thickness and to elongate its length, while slight or no deformation is introduced into the other lateral side, thus forming the cage blank into an arc shape. A third roll disposed at the exit side of the forming rolls bends the rolled cage blank into a circular conical ring. Adjacent butt ends of the formed conical ring cage blank are aligned and joined together during the assembly process to form the large diameter tapered roller bearing cage.

  • Patent number: 8459083
Abstract: A roller guiding system for thin strips (20) at a rolling system outlet which allows a safe guiding without take-off and consequent tipping/folding of the head of the strip and without cobbles even at high feeding speeds. The system of the invention prevents the strip from impacting or sliding on the upper containment devices (8) or on the rollers (4?) by its upwards or downwards movement, thus avoiding possible damages to the surface, such as scratches or lines. Furthermore, such a guiding system acts on the mechanical-aerodynamic phenomenon which causes instability in the head moving by making a self-centering guiding system which is thus suitable for improving the winding quality of the coil itself.

  • Patent number: 8104316
Abstract: A piercing mill includes a plurality of inclined rolls, a plug, a pusher, and an undriven guide roll. The pusher pushes a round billet from the rear end at least until the round billet advances for a prescribed distance after contacting the inclined rolls. The guide roll is between the inclined rolls and the pusher and includes a roll shaft and a roll surface, with the roll shaft arranged obliquely with respect to a pass line PL. The sectional shape of the roll surface is a concave arch shape. The round billet is rotated by the guide roll and the friction force generated when the round billet contacts the inclined rolls is reduced. Consequently, the wear of the inclined rolls can be restrained if the round billet is pierced and rolled while it is pushed in between the inclined rolls using the pusher.

  • Patent number: 5752403
Abstract: A method of hot rolling steel slabs of thin to standard thickness into hot mill band is carried out on a hot reversing mill having a coiler furnace upstream and downstream of the reversing mill. A twin stand hot reversing mill is used and the slab is introduced into the first stand of the mill without any breakdown pass. Flat passes of the slab back and forth through the first stand and the second stand occur to form an intermediate product having a thickness capable of being coiled. Thereafter, the intermediate product is coiled on one of the upstream or downstream drums. The product is then passed back and forth between the first and second stand in tandem. An edging stand is positioned between the reversing stands to edge the product during the flat passes. The final product is removed from the hot mill band in one of sheet, plate or coil form.

  • Patent number: 5709119
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for the controlled formation of loops of rolling stock between two roll stands, particularly in the finishing or intermediate trains of small and medium iron trains. In the method, the rolling stock emerging from the roll stand is allowed to drop as a result of gravity, the front end of the rolling stock is then deflected in the direction of the subsequent roll stand and the rolling stock is temporarily supported during the deflection phase until the front end of the rolling stock has entered the subsequent stand and the loop control unit stabilizes the loop. The arrangement for carrying out the above-described method includes a support and guide member for at least the rear roll stand of two roll stands. The support and guide member is inclined downwardly and extends toward the front roll stand.

  • Patent number: 5634365
Abstract: The process relates to the aptitude for detectability of defects using eddy-currents on metal tubes cold laminated using a pilger mill and relates more particularly to the possibility of reducing the background noise and increasing the ratio between a standard signal and this background noise. The process consists of carrying out, after reduction in section by at least 30% in a cold pilger mill, a hollow drawing pass with a reduction in the external diameter of approximately 0.1% to 5%. The signal/background noise ratio can in this way be multiplied by a factor of between 2 and 3.7, in the case of a series of tubes made of INCO 690 alloy, as shown in the single figure. The invention also relates to tubes produced using this process.Application in production of steam generating tubes for nuclear power stations.

  • Patent number: 5634360
Abstract: A guiding method and apparatus are presented for preventing the generation of lateral curving in a rolled slab produced in a roughing mill train, consisting of an edging mill and a horizontal mill in tandem, for example. The apparatus basically includes a first side guide placed upstream at the entrance to the edging mill, a second side guide placed downstream at the exit of the horizontal mill and a third side guide placed between the edging mill and the horizontal mill. The first side guide at the entrance to the edging mill synchronously closes the separation distance of the guide components upon the entry of the rolled slab into the first side guide, leaving a narrow space between the guide and the rolled slab. The third side guide closes the separation spacing based on slab exit timing representing the instant the tail end of the rolled slab passes through the edging mill. The second side guide assumes a narrow separation distance when the head end of the rolled slab enters therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4872245
Abstract: A cold-rolled strip manufacturing apparatus, in which a continuous cold reduction mill and a continuous annealing furnace are directly linked together, has a tension-leveller-type scale breaker for elongating hot-rolled breakdown by 2 to 7 percent, a scale scrubbing brush unit and an immersion-type continuous pickling tank installed upstream of the continuous cold reduction mill.Descaling of the hot-rolled strip coil is carried out by breaking the mill scale formed on its surface by causing the running strip to elongate and then the broken scale is removed from the surface. The percent elongation given to the strip is feedforward controlled on the basis of the manufacturing conditions of the hot-rolled strip coil and/or the properties and quantity of the mill scale formed. In another descaling method, the percent elongation given to the strip is feedback controlled on the basis of the condition of scale breaking and removing that is detected during the period in which the mill scale is broken and removed.
