    Abstract: A control computer for a rolling train is supplied with prescribed stand parameters of a rolling stand of the rolling train. The control computer sets variables describing a rolling pass of the rolling stand that together with initial data of a flat piece to be rolled and the stand data describe the resultant roll nip and the asymmetry thereof. The initial data may be width, average thickness and average strength of the workpiece to be rolled. Based on the initial data, the stand data and the set variables an expected delivery taper and/or an expected strip sabre for the workpiece is determined. At least one of the set variables is manipulated to bring the determined delivery taper close to a desired delivery taper and/or the strip sabre close to a desired strip sabre. The manipulated variables are used to control rolling the workpiece piece.

    Abstract: Apparatus for twisting and guiding metal stock into roll grooves, comprises a guide mounted in front of such a groove. The guide has a through path from which the stock emerges from the guide and passes to the groove, and a feed path disposed to one side of the through path. The feed path is defined by a funnel-shaped member having an opening therethrough of about the same size and shape as the stock to be fed, and which is mounted for swinging movement between two positions, in one of which it is out of line with the through path and in the other of which it is in line with the through path. The stock is fed through the swinging member in the out-of-line position and contacts a cam surface which moves the stock and hence the swinging member, into line with the through path, thereby twisting the stock about 90.degree.. After the stock is passed, the swinging member returns by gravity to its out-of-line position.

The first step in the rolling of hot metal strip is to roll a transfer bar of about 1 inch thickness, and this is ordinarily then passed through a series of finishing mills which reduce the thickness of the transfer bar to the desired final stage. The method and apparatus of this invention provides for the coiling up of a transfer bar after it has been rolled but before it passes to the finishing mill, the transfer of the coiled transfer bar from the coiling location to an adjacent uncoiling location where uncoiling can be completed or completely carried out, and initiating the coiling of a further transfer bar while the first transfer bar is still uncoiling.
