  • Patent number: 5152164
Abstract: A roll for a rolling mill capable of an on-line control of the width thereof. The roll includes a drive roll connected to a mill motor and a hollow driven roll driven by the drive roll while being axially slidable with respect to the drive roll. A screw shaft is screwed to the inside of the hollow driven roll in such a manner that an end-to-end contact of the driven roll with the drive roll is obtained. A clutch is provided for a selective locking of the screw shaft, which is unlocked during a normal rolling process, so that the screw shaft is rotated together with the drive roll and the driven roll by a rotation of the mill motor. When adjusting the roll width, the clutch is operated so that the screw shaft is locked, and as a result, a rotation of the mill motor causes a mutual axial movement of the drive roll and driven roll to thus adjust the roll width. A means is also provided for a centering of the roll at the pass line of the material, after the adjustment of the roll width.

  • Patent number: 5144828
Abstract: A combined, continuously operating high-speed light-section and wire mill composed predominantly of so-called cantilever stands or CL stands with overhung-mounted collars. In the roughing train and in the intermediate train and/or in the finishing train, some rolling mill stands with a modular unti with double-mounted collars are arranged. A CL modular unit of the CL stands with overhung-mounted collars can be exchanged as required against a modular unit with double-mounted collars. The second bearing of the modular unit is arranged in a box stirrup which can be coupled to the gear box of the CL stand. The collar can be assembled and disassembled with an automatically actuated, preferably hydraulically acting quick fixing device which includes piston-cylinder units for clamping and releasing the collar on the shaft in axial and in radial direction. The modular unit is a roll box of sandwich construction with box plates which can be separated from each other.

The axial geometric configuration of the vertical rolls in the stand serve as a fixed reference value and the horizontal rolls are displaced radially and axially into roll positions which are measured by actual position indicators and from which the geometric roll gap center and the geometric roll center in the stand are determined. For taking into consideration the spring characteristic constants of the stand, the radial spring characteristic for the two horizontal rolls is determined together, the radial spring characteristic for each vertical roll is determined separately and the axial spring characteristic of one of the horizontal rolls is determined separately in accordance with one of the two axial directions.

  • Patent number: 5038591
Abstract: In addition to the usual type of screw-down mechanism, work roll gap is adjusted during work roll change for different diameter work rolls, without removing the back up rolls, by a variable height plate rotatably inserted between the back up roll chocks and the housing, which will minimize the volume of oil contained within the screw-down adjustment rams while maintaining good rigidity for the plate adjustment even during high impact and high vibration hot rolling. A similar effect is provided by containing unused plate height portions entirely within the footprint of the housing where they can be rigidly supported. Further rigidity is obtained with minimizing the volume of fluid within the rams, accomplished by placing the valve stand immediately adjacent to the hydraulic rams for the screw-down and preferably on top of the housing.

Abstract: The rolling mill comprises a plurality of working rolls and supporting rolls or a plurality of working rolls, intermediate rolls and supporting rolls. The intermediate rolls with their mounts and the slender working rolls ussed with them in six-high operation are exchangeable with or replaceable by larger thicker working rolls for two-high operation. No contact can occur between the body of a working roll and the body of the adjacent supporting roll during use as a two-high mill. In two-high operation the mount of a working roll is provided with a spacer piece engaging against the mounting member of the adjacent supporting roll. The mounts of the thicker working rolls used in two-high operation can be fitted into the guide pieces which act as guides for the mounting pieces of the intermediate rolls when the rolling mill is used as a six-high mill.

Abstract: A top roll exchanging apparatus for a rim shape forming machine. The top roll exchanging apparatus includes a movable bearing device for supporting a top roll shaft and a top roll loading/unloading arm provided on an extension of the top roll shaft. The movable bearing device is movable between an engaging position wherein the movable bearing device rotatably supports the top roll shaft and a waiting position wherein the movable bearing device is spaced from the extension of the top roll shaft. The top roll loading/unloading arm is movable toward and away from the top roll shaft and is rotatable about a mid-portion thereof. • Patent number: 4823584
Abstract: In a beam mill stand having lower horizontal roll chocks, supported by screw-ups, upper horizontal roll chocks suspended on hooks from balance beams and urged downward by screw-downs, and vertical roll chocks supported by and moveable in transverse guide ways, in order to facilitate changing of the rolls as an interlocked stack, there are resilient support mechanisms in the upper horizontal roll chocks which are restrained by the hooks on the balance beams. With the mill stand inoperative, when the beams are lowered the resilient support mechanisms are released and extend to engage the vertical roll chocks to support the upper horizontal roll chocks resiliently. An interlocking mechanism in the vertical rolls is operated by the resilient support mechanism so that the vertical and lower horizontal roll chocks are locked against lateral movement.

  • Patent number: 4787226
Abstract: A method of aligning the horizontal and vertical rolls of a beam mill stand. First the upper horizontal roll is brought to a datum position, and then the vertical rolls are brought into contact with the opposite flanks of upper horizontal roll, to establish datum positions for the vertical rolls. The vertical rolls are then withdrawn from their datum positions, and the lower horizontal roll is brought into contact with the upper horizontal roll to establish a datum position for the second horizontal roll. The vertical rolls are brought into contact with the flanks of the upper and lower horizontal rolls. The initial inter-roll spacing of the vertical rolls at first contact is compared with the inter-roll spacing of the vertical rolls at the second contact to determine if there is any axial misalignment of the horizontal work rolls.
