Abstract: Sheet piling and like steel shapes are made in a caliber rolling mill having upper and lower rolls of suitable contour. One of the rolls is axially fixed and the other can be shifted axially in opposite directions so that shoulders of the rolls engage and these positions are stored along with a relationship of axial force and spring constants of the mill frame. The rolling then takes these stored values into consideration.

Abstract: A roll former line for forming different shapes including a first roll stand attached to a bed which provides vertical adjustable movement. The roll stand includes three spindles in vertical alignment with each other, the forming rolls on the top and bottom spindles working against opposite sides of the middle forming roll, so as to provide reverse shapes between the top and middle forming roll and the middle and bottom forming roll. Linear actuators are connected to the bed of the first roll stand for moving the first roll stand vertically on the bed. Opposite the first roll stand on the line is a second roll stand attached to a second bed including two spindles in vertical alignment and corresponding forming rolls thereon. The first roll stand can be raised or lowered by the linear actuators so as to use reverse forming rolls on the first roll stand in conjunction with the forming rolls on the second roll stand to form a reverse shape on one edge of the sheet being formed.

  • Patent number: 5809821
Abstract: A roll stand with backing rolls and work rolls for rolling sheets and strips, in which at least the upper and lower work rolls mounted in chucks inside of housing windows formed between housing columns of the roll housing can be moved out of their shared vertical plane horizontally in opposite directions by movement drives effectively associated with the roll chucks into positions wherein the vertical planes that pass through the axis of roll of the upper work roll and of the lower work roll intersect. This is achieved by the fact that on the inner and outer sides (which are opposite to each other and run parallel to the direction of roll) of each housing column, a movement and a swivel bearing are arranged for one of two substantially horizontal beams. The beams are parallel, connected to each other and extend on both sides past the housing columns on one side, the beams extend into the housing window and, on the side facing away from the housing window, out of the roll housing.

  • Patent number: 5806361
Abstract: The present invention provides a rolling-mill roll of a barrel-width adjustable type improved in strength by preventing stress concentration in a torque transmission structure for transmitting the torque from drive side roll to another roll. The connecting rod coaxially projected from the drive side arbor is inserted into the sleeve, and the rolls are mounted onto the circumferences of the connecting rod and the sleeve. The connecting rod and the sleeve are supported in a housing via bearings and are coupled with each other by a screw shaft mechanism so that the sleeve is axially movable to vary the barrel width. The complementary engagement between the spline or key for transmitting the torque of the arbor to the sleeve is made at a position offset outward from the axial center of the sleeve bearing so that the complementary engagement is not affected by the bending of the roll due to the rolling reaction and thus a stress concentration is prevented.

Abstract: A method for adjusting the roll gap in strip rolling mills including a roll stand equipped with hydraulic adjusting devices on the drive side as well as on the operator side, wherein the positions of the rolls in a roll stand are adjustable by means of the hydraulic adjusting devices. Prior to the beginning of rolling, the stand is calibrated in a reproducible state. For any changes of the stand geometry and/or the force proportions in the stand, position changes of the adjusting devices corresponding to and resulting from these changes are determined. Changes in the stand geometry and/or the force proportions adjusted or occurring during the rolling operation are regulated by utilizing the difference between the determined corresponding adjusting positions on the drive side and the operator side and by controlling the adjustment toward zero.

  • Patent number: 5718141
Abstract: The present invention relates to a universal rolling machine wherein a pair of left and right vertical rolls, which are positioned on axial centers that intersect axial centers of a pair of upper and lower horizontal rolls, are mounted coaxially within vertical roll chocks, and the vertical roll chocks are each arranged within a housing in a freely slidable manner along a direction of rolling of a material to be rolled. Assemblies each comprising a circular cylindrical nut and a screw are arranged on either side of the vertical roll chocks along the direction of rolling in spaces between the housing and the vertical roll chocks, as a movement mechanism for the vertical roll chocks. The provision of this configuration enables the use of conventional vertical roll chocks, ensures sufficient mechanical strength with respect to the reactive forces applied to the vertical rolls during the rolling, enables a reduction in costs, and also enables a significant shortening of the time required for replacing the rolls.
