Respective pairs of formations at least one of which is vertically elongated couple each of the bodies to the respective block for joint axial displacement while permitting relative vertical nonaxial displacement between the bodies and the respective blocks.

    Abstract: The rolling mill for mechanical descaling of hot rolled steel is constructed according to the slidable roll process with reducing rolls so that a unform operation with different and/or changing shape steel strips can obtained. This is attained when the rolling mill has at least two rolls slidable in opposite directions whose body surfaces are constructed with S-shape contours positioned inversely to each other so that these contours compliment each other flawlessly in one certain axial relative position. When sliding the rolls in opposite directions in one case the contour is decreased in the center region of the steel strip and when slid in the opposite directions in the other case the contour is increased in the center region. Thus the rolls can be adjusted to fit a gently convex steel strip profile by axially sliding the rolls in opposite directions as also rolled strips with a thickness centrally reduced in comparison to that of the edge regions can by appropriate sliding of the rolls opposite each other.

Work rolls are cyclically shifted in their axial direction within a range so as not to permit the both edges of the material to come out of the taper ground ends of the work rolls, thereby preventing edge built-ups of the material and simultaneously effecting crown-controlling of the rolled material. The work rolls are finely shifted and simultaneously a bending action is applied to the work rolls in a manner to eliminate a bending action acting upon the work rolls caused by the material being rolled by the work rolls.

Since the opposing pressing surface is located on the mount, e.g. on laterally extending engaging lugs of the mount, symmetric to the transverse central plane of a radial bearing of the mount, the bending force acts continuously on this mount in this central plane whose lateral relative position the mount of the axially slidable rolls may take relative to the bending device. The tilt-free guiding which absorbs the tilting torque or moment of the intermediate piece can be improved by a mechanical or hydraulic synchronizing device. Then the pistons are no longer exposed to transverse forces due to the axial sliding of rolls and/or their mounts.

Initial reduction is effected by employing a pair of cooperating cylindrical central portions and at least one tapered portion.     Abstract: A pair of work rolls is provided in a strip mill of the type having one or more back-up rolls for each work roll. Each work roll comprises a tubular body having an axial bore of uniform diameter throughout its length. The exterior surface of the tubular body has a cylindrical roll face of uniform diameter, terminating at its ends in neck portions of lesser diameter. The ends of the body are closed by removable fluid-tight plugs. A cylindrical mandrel of the same length as the roll face is mounted in the bore of each work roll and normally has an interference fit therein. The mandrels of the upper and lower work rolls are relieved at opposite ends. The remainder of the work roll bore at either end of the mandrel defines a pair of volumes in each work roll, filled with hydraulic fluid and individually controllable as to hydraulic pressure. When a strip is to be rolled, the mandrel of each roll is shifted to align its relief with one of the strip edges.
