  • Patent number: 4685320
Abstract: A method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls for reducing sectional areas of the rods or wires and achieving a stable rolling operation with high efficiency by limiting to less than a predetermined value the ratio of a long side to a short side of a cross-section of a blank material (having a rectangular cross-section) which has passed through each pair of grooveless rolls or limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls also achieves high elongation efficiency to make stable the rolling operation by limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method uses a grooveless roll entry guide in the grooveless rolling so as to securely hold a blank material from entry to exit in a gap between the pair of grooveless rolls to eliminate overturns at the ends of the blank material and fins extending from the material due to the overturns.

  • Patent number: 4680953
Abstract: A roller entry guide to guide material along a longitudinal axis has a body and a pair of generally parallel roller assemblies pivotally mounted on the body for rotation about an axis normal to the longitudinal axis. Each of the roller assemblies is located on an opposite side of the longitudinal axis to define a passageway for material moving along the axis and includes at least one roller rotatably attached thereto. The guide also includes a wedge that acts between the roller assemblies and the body. The wedge has a pair of legs disposed at either side of the body. These legs have tapered portions at the ends thereof which are operable on respective roller assemblies. An adjustment assembly is operable on the wedge to position the wedge to induce rotation of the roller assemblies about a vertical axis, and cause the rollers to be moved simultaneously and to equal distances towards or away from the longitudinal axis.

Abstract: In a positioning control device for guiding the side edges of an elongated strip at the entrance into a hot-rolled wide strip finish rolling mill train, guidance feed members are displaced transversely of the rolling direction by piston-cylinder assemblies. Appropriate displacement of the guidance feed members depends on continuously transmitted measured actual values of the strip position within the rolling train which are compared with preset required values. If the width of the strip exceeds a nominal width then large deformation of the strip side edges occurs along with axial reaction forces in the roller supports of the first rolling stand in the finish rolling mill.

Abstract: A twist roller guide having a minimized overall length, including a guide box, a twist guide member having a twisted through hole for giving preliminary twist to the stock passing therethrough, and a roller holder consisting of a hollow cylindrical body portion and a pair of bearing plates extending forwardly therefrom to support a pair of twist rollers therebetween. The twist guide member consists of an enlarged head portion defining an inlet opening therein and a tubular body portion, the head portion being fitted in a bracket portion of the guide box formed adjacent to the rear end thereof. The body portion of the twist guide is fitted in the hollow cylindrical body portion of the roller holder, which is firmly supported in another bracket portion of the guide box formed adjacent to the front end thereof. The twist guide is beveled at the top and bottom of its exit end face so that it may be placed quite close to the twist rollers.

  • Patent number: 4212181
Abstract: A mechanism for automatically centering sub-guide rollers and adjusting the clearance between the sub-guide rollers thereby to adjust the clamping condition of the material to be rolled, for use in the material guiding apparatus of a rolling mill for rolling a steel blank into wires, bars and so forth, the material guiding apparatus being of a type having a pair of roller holders 2, 3 each of which carrying corresponding one of a pair of main guide rollers 4, 5 and a pair of sub-guide rollers 41, 51. Each of the sub-guide rollers is rotatably carried by corresponding one of a pair of eccentric shafts pins 26 unitary with each of a pair of support shafts 25 supported by a corresponding roller holder. A right hand screw gear 27 and a left hand screw gear 28 are attached to respective ones of the support shafts 25. A manually operable right hand screw worm 29 and a right hand screw worm 30 which is also manually operable are made to engage with the gears 27, 28, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4184354
Abstract: This invention is directed to a system for the transportation and storage of heavy goods of bulky dimensions and, in particular, coiled metal trackway which, during manufacture, is formed in rolls and requires movement between fabricating stations and intermediate storage stations under conditions where high space storage is the preferred arrangement. High space storage areas having narrow sides but not directly interconnected and in abutting arrangement are located in equi-axial fashion along a central longitudinal transportation pathway having low level workshops adjoining this pathway. Also adjoining this central transportation pathway are manufacturing stations which are disposed in transverse relation to the central pathway. Overhead transportation trucks transfer bundles of metal sheets from high space storage to fabricating stations, including rolling mills and cutting machines, for forming the sheets and cutting into the final product in the form of bundles.
