  • Patent number: 4429560
Abstract: Apparatus and method for making a transition plate for a mine roof truss from a strip of metal includes a die set having a first and second station. In the first station the strip of metal is bent downwardly at its sides, a notch is sheared in both sides of the strip and two holes are pierced through the strip. In the second station the transition plate is completed by bending the leading portion of the strip into an "M" shaped saddle portion, the strip is sheared transversely and bent downwardly at its trailing end.

  • Patent number: 4118968
Abstract: A progressive fin die having means for preventing metal particle buildup around the punch with the means stripping the workpiece from the punch. A plurality of draw punches are arranged with decreasing diameters in a row. A ram is movable to and from the draw punches and includes a plurality of draw bushings. Movement of the ram toward the draw punches results in the punches forming bonnets in the workpiece positioned between the punches and bushings. Spring biased stripper rods extend through the bushings and are operable to force the workpiece from the bushings. A compound pierce and straightening station includes a hollow pierce bushing mounted to the frame for receiving a pierce punch movable to and from the frame by a ram. A straightening bushing encircles the pierce punch and is externally engageable with the bonnet formed by the draw punches. A stripper bushing is slidably mounted to the pierce punch and is disposed between the straightening bushing and the pierce punch.

  • Patent number: 4096727
Abstract: A hydraulic punch press having a base adapted to receive a workpiece and a cylinder axially disposed opposite to the base. The cylinder includes a first and second piston slidable defining within its interior, a first chamber formed between the surface of said first piston and one end of said cylinder and a second chamber formed between the first and second pistons. The pistons have coaxial rods extending outwardly of the other end of the cylinder in opposition to said base. The rod of the first piston extends axially through the rod of said second piston and carries at its end a tool while the rod of the second piston is tubular and is adapted to carry at its end holding means for the workpiece blank.

  • Patent number: 4077246
Abstract: A small percussion cap making tool consisting of a Cutter and a Cutting Block. The Cutter is multi-toothed with an internal forming cone, a shoulder to release the finished caps and a cap exit passage. The Cutting Block has a guide for the Cutter, a material feeding slot and a centered mandrel that works in conjunction with the Cutter's forming cone to form the percussion caps. The percussion cap material is placed in the feeding slot and the Cutter is driven downward. On the downward stroke the material is wrinkled, cut, folded and formed into a percussion cap. Extraction of the Cutter from the Cutting Block pulls the cap free of the mandrel so it can be retrieved from the cap exit passage in the Cutter. The percussion cap may then be charged with a priming mixture and used.

  • Patent number: 4073176
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for piercing and flanging a metal workpiece. The apparatus includes a punch and a back-up die with the punch driven by a hydraulic ram. The punch, die, and ram are mounted on a frame which is movably carried by a main support. A workpiece support is affixed to the main support and positions the workpiece between the punch and the die. The ram moves the punch toward and away from the workpiece relative to the frame and also causes the frame to move relative to the workpiece. This arrangement enables the punch and die to seek operative positions relative to the workpiece without the necessity of the workpiece being precisely positioned. The punch and die are also designed to be reversed to provide the opposite operation on the workpiece, if desired.

Abstract: Apparatus for piercing and coining a metal workpiece is provided. The apparatus includes a punch and a back-up die which accomplish the piercing, and a coining die located around the punch and movable with respect thereto to accomplish the coining. The punch and coining die are driven by a hydraulic ram which enables the overall apparatus to be relatively compact as compared to most heavy-duty dies and is adaptable for use at a station in a machine which also performs other operations on the workpiece. The workpiece is held precisely in position by a plurality of locators including adjustable fingers which contact and position the workpiece.
