  • Patent number: 6948350
Abstract: A ring-shaped core metal is pressed and compressed by a main punch and a counter punch so as to have a wave shape. Moreover, each group of three micro-protrusions provided on each of top points of the wave shape are cut in the core metal. Then, three notches are cut on the core metal corresponding to the micro-protrusions. Furthermore, plastic flow is generated at a surface layer of the core metal due to partial compression by the notches at the time of pressing and compressing. Then, the waves are formed on the core metal with the notches as the top points. The notches are cut at seven sections respectively on a front surface and a rear surface of the core metal. Thus, seven waves are formed on the core metal in total. Since the notches are formed on the front and the rear surfaces of the waves, a “return” phenomenon is not generated as seen in a conventional cool working method. Thus, the waves are formed at high accuracy.

  • Patent number: 6453716
Abstract: Elements with heads confronting each other are blanked out of two opposite sides of an elongated metal sheet. The differences between thicknesses of the elements at a measurement point at or near necks of the elements and measurement points at ears of the elements are averaged, and a distance between corners of the metal sheet and a counter load of counter punches are established in order to keep the averages in an allowable range. When elements are blanked out of the metal sheet with the distance and the counter load thus established, even if the metal sheet is laterally displaced out of position, a belt assembly made up of the elements blanked out of the two opposite sides of the metal sheet and mixed at a ratio of about 1 to 1 poses no problems because variations in the thicknesses of the elements blanked out of one of the two opposite sides of the metal sheet and variations in the thicknesses of the elements blanked out of the other of the two opposite sides of the metal sheet cancel each other.

  • Patent number: 5052207
Abstract: When a blank is cut from metal sheet which suffers from crystallographic anisotropy, there is a tendency for ears to be formed during subsequent forming operations, such as drawing or pressing. In order to compensate for this tendency, there may be used a metal blank which is not completely round, but has lobes at positions to cancel at least some of the valleys between the ears. There is described a punch and die which may be used to form such a lobed blank. The punch has four circumferentially extending lobe-forming sections. Each lobe-forming section is constructed by forming a stepped recess in the cutting edge of the punch. • Patent number: 4998430
Abstract: In a progressive die for punch press operations in which a strip of material is fed into the press and sequential operations are conducted on the strip including the separation of parts from the strip. The die is provided with a construction which forms an integral carrier tab between the parts to be separated. In the embodiment ilustrated, the operation is the manufacture of rotor and stator laminations for a dynamoelectric machine. The strip of material is fed into the press in which the die is mounted, and the respective rotor and stator laminations are formed in a series of workstations within the die. The improvement in the die construction is a punch station for substantially but not completely separating the rotor lamination from the strip. Thereafter, additional operations are constructed on the strip, the rotor lamination being completely separated at a subsequent workstation.

  • Patent number: 4862722
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a novel shell such as used in the manufacture of can ends, and to a method and tools for making such a shell. A non-circular blank having rounded corners is cut from thin metal. The blank is oblong in a direction transverse to the grain of the metal. A first set of tools separates the blanks and forms a substantially flat central panel and an upward-extending chuck wall about the edge of the panel to produce a partially formed shell. The junction area between the panel and the chuck wall has a relatively large radius of curvature at this time. A second set of tools forms in the blank a lip extending outward from the upper end of the chuck wall and generally parallel to the panel; then the panel and the chuck wall are separately gripped, followed by relative movement between the panel and the chuck wall while wrapping the junction area around a forming punch to form a panel wall in the junction area extending upward from the inner part of the chuck wall.
