  • Patent number: 11414933
Abstract: A drilling bottom hole assembly for loss circulation mitigation includes a drill bit configured to drill a wellbore in a formation. The drill bit is attached to a drill string. The wellbore includes a high-loss circulation zone into which drilling fluid is lost during drilling the wellbore. An under reamer is attached to the drill string upstring of the drill bit. The under reamer is downhole of the high-loss circulation zone. The under reamer, in response to actuation, is configured to widen a diameter of the high-loss circulation zone. An expansion assembly is connected to the under reamer. The expansion assembly surrounds the drill string upstring of the under reamer. The expansion assembly is configured to cover the high-loss circulation zone after the diameter of the high-loss circulation zone is widened by the under reamer.

  • Patent number: 8936077
Abstract: A material that dissolves or disintegrates is secured to an inside surface of tubular goods before swaging or expansion takes place. The material remains in position as the swaging occurs and post expansion is removed leaving a recess of a desired shape to function for a variety of purposes depending on its shape and location. At the end of a tubular it can serve as a bell into which the next string is expanded for a monobore completion. In other locations in a tubular it can function as a landing collar for a variety of tools. It can also function as a seal bore as the added material is removed preferably with water. The preferred material is an alloy of aluminum, tin and zinc.

  • Patent number: 8601853
Abstract: An apparatus for collapsing an expandable stent can include a plurality of movable members braided together to form a tubular member or main body portion. The movable members can at least partially define a lumen in the main body portion. The main body portion can be adapted to circumferentially apply an inward force as the diameter of the main body portion is reduced. The diameter of the main body portion can be reduced by moving opposing ends of the main body portion away from each other. An expanded expandable stent can be collapsed by positioning the stent inside the lumen of the main body portion and pulling opposing ends of the main body portion apart. An intermediate layer can be provided between the stent and the main body portion to reduce shear stresses and point forces on the stent.

Abstract: A stent is mounted upon a tubular braid. A tapered mandrel is placed within the inner lumen of the braid to allow the stent to be expanded to a larger diameter. The tubular braid acts as a transport that reduces friction between the stent and the mandrel to help uniformly stretch the stent circumferentially. Uniquely shaped expansion mandrels limit the stresses applied to stent struts while the stent is expanded to a larger diameter. A plurality of longitudinally extending expansion blades cooperates to form a complete mandrel body. The expansion blades lie adjacent to one another and are capable of independently moving relative to each other in a longitudinal direction. Subsets of alternating expansion blades can be moved axially relative to the other subsets. The expandable mandrel may include numerous regions having progressively larger diameters than an adjacent region.

Abstract: According to a bulging device and a bulging method using a profile element pipe, for example, even when a profile steel pipe having a cross sectional shape varying in the axial direction as in a tapered pipe is hydraulically bulged, a bulging in which an internal pressure loading and an axial pressing are combined with each other can be performed to provide a larger expansion ratio than a conventional case and a joining and socket connection thereof to the other part can also be easily performed.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming an expandable tubular member using an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the expandable tubular member, an actuator coupled to the expansion device, and an anchor coupled to the actuator. The anchor includes a resilient member that is selectively deformable between a first position wherein the resilient member does not engage the expandable tubular member and a second position wherein the resilient member engages the expandable tubular member so as to releasably couple the anchor to the expandable tubular member.

Abstract: An apparatus for sizing a pipe end comprising: a plug 3 for sizing the pipe end; a chuck 2 for clamping the pipe; and shifting means for shifting the position of the plug 3 and/the chuck 2, which are placed successively from the end of the pipe 2, and the plug 3 has a circular cross section, and is constituted by a taper portion 31 and a diameter equivalent portion 32 continuously formed from the tip of the plug in succession. The outer diameter of the taper portion 31 is gradually expanding from the tip toward the rear end while satisfying the following formulas (1) and (2). The chuck 2 is capable of changing clamping position of the pipe 1. This apparatus makes it possible to size the inner diameter of a pipe end with superior dimensional precision 22?LR/(D1×0.01/2)?115 ??(1) R2?R1 ??(2).

Abstract: In a method of producing an ultra thin wall metallic tube by a cold drawing process in which a drawing machine is used, a wall thickness of the metallic tube is reduced to perform drawing while a tube-wall centerline diameter of a tube material is expanded, using a solid die which gradually increases in diameter from its engaging inlet side toward its work-ending outlet side and a plug or a tapered mandrel bar which gradually increases in diameter over a corresponding distance from the engaging inlet side of the solid die toward the work-ending outlet side of the solid die, whereby the wall thickness can dramatically be reduced.

  • Patent number: 7770429
Abstract: In a method for producing a coupling on a pipe, preferably consisting of copper or steel or Cu—, Ni—, Fe— alloys, by way of a preferably graduated or one-stage expansion of the pipe end to create a much larger difference in diameter, an expansion tool is introduced axially into the end of the pipe. Once the expansion tool has been introduced into the pipe end, the region of the pipe end that is to be or has been expanded is completely or partially compressed, by a force acting axially on the pipe end, so that the external diameter of the pipe end that is to be processed is delimited by one or more shaping jaws that completely or partially surround the pipe end. The invention also relates to a device for producing a coupling on a pipe end according to the method.

  • Patent number: 7669328
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a push rod from a length of tube having a first end and a second end. The tube is held in a first fixture and a first tool is brought into engagement with the first end while a force is applied to deform the first end into a cone. A disc is thereafter affixed to the cone through a welding process. The tube with the disc attached is moved to a second fixture and a threaded shaft is partially inserted into the tube adjacent the second end. A radial force is applied to the tube that causes the tube to be compressed into engagement with the threaded shaft. The threaded shaft is then rotated causing its translation within the tube to establish a desired length between a face on the disc and a head on the threaded shaft to complete the manufacture of the push rod.

Abstract: Tools for expanding (i.e., flaring and swedging) the ends of metal tubes are configured for attachment to a powered impact hammer, such as an air hammer. A swedging tool for swedging an end of a metal tube has a swedging body with a die section for expanding the tube when driven thereinto and a flanged shank attached to the swedging body and configured for engagement by a powered impact hammer. A flaring tool for flaring an end of a metal tube includes a flaring body having a die section for flaring the tube when driven thereinto. A flanged shank is attached to the flaring body and configured for engagement by a powered impact hammer. A method for expanding an end of a metal tube entails attaching a die body for expanding the end of the metal tube to a powered impact hammer, aligning the die body with the inner diameter of the metal tube, activating the powered impact hammer, and urging the die body a determined distance into the metal tube.

  • Patent number: 7610667
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an expandable threaded connection between segments of expandable tubulars. Threaded connections are machined into pre-expanded ends of tubulars. Once the threaded connections are machined into the pre-expanded ends, two joints of tubulars are connected using the threads, thus creating a pre-expanded threaded connection. After a tubular string is made up and lowered into a wellbore, the entire length of the string is expanded using known methods for expanding tubulars. During the downhole expansion operation, the pre-expanded threaded connections experience minimal expansion. The minimal downhole expansion of the pre-expanded threaded connections allows the threaded connections to maintain their sealing ability and coupling strength.
