    Abstract: Threads are formed in situ throughout a bore of a sleeve inserted into a corresponding hole a substrate. A sleeve having a bore is inserted into a corresponding hole of a substrate. A mandrel is rotated through the sleeve. The mandrel has a threaded ended; the threaded end rotating throughout the bore of the sleeve forms threads throughout the bore. Prior to inserting the sleeve into the corresponding hole of the substrate, the sleeve can be placed onto the mandrel. In this case, the mandrel has an increasing diameter at the threaded end thereof, such that the sleeve rests on the mandrel towards the threaded end thereof where the bore has a smaller diameter than the mandrel. The mandrel is then rotated out of the sleeve in a direction opposite the direction in which the sleeve has been inserted into the corresponding hole of the substrate.

Certain embodiments include a boiling surface that include a plurality of primary grooves, protrusions and secondary grooves to form boiling cavities. The boiling surface may be formed by using a tool for cutting the inner surface of a tube. The tool has a tool axis and at least one tip with a cutting edge and a lifting edge. Methods for making a boiling surface are also disclosed, including cutting through the inner surface of a tube to form primary grooves, then cutting and lifting the inner surface to form protrusions and secondary grooves.

    Abstract: There is provided a production method of an internally ribbed steel tube, capable of forming spiral ribs stably so as to reduce troubles at the time of cold drawing for forming the spiral ribs of the steel tube. In this production method, the spiral ribs can be formed stably so as to reduce troubles at the time of cold drawing for forming the spiral ribs by straightening bends of a blank tube before the cold drawing for forming the spiral ribs, by optimizing the direction of the spiral rib formation after the bend straightening, and by correcting the drawing schedule depending on the blank tube. The obtained internally ribbed steel tube is well applicable to an increased capacity and a higher temperature/higher pressure operation of a boiler because the steel tube is provided with high formability and excellent quality as a boiler steel tube.

    Abstract: There is provided a production method capable of forming spiral ribs stably by reducing troubles at the time of cold drawing for forming the spiral ribs on an internally ribbed steel tube. When the internally ribbed steel tube on which a plurality of stripes of spiral ribs are formed in the tube axis direction is manufactured by inserting a plug on which a plurality of stripes of spiral grooves are formed on the outer peripheral surface thereof into the tube to be worked subjected to chemical treatment and then performing cold drawing, drawing is performed with the plug preheated to 50 to 200° C., thus forming the spiral ribs on the internal surface of a blank tube. The chemical treatment preferably includes a pickling step of removing oxided scale and rust on the tube surface, a step of forming a zinc phosphate coat on the neutralized tube surface, and a step of forming a lubricating layer on the zinc phosphate coat.

The external thread is adapted to threadedly engage the internal thread. A substantially helical groove is formed on an outer surface of the box member. The method of manufacturing the box member includes selecting an outer diameter for a box member that causes the tool joint to have a greater than a selected bending strength ratio. A helical groove is formed on the outer diameter of the box member such that the helical groove reduces the bending strength ratio to be about the selected bending strength ratio. An internal thread is formed on an internal surface of the box member. Another method of manufacturing the box member includes forming an internal thread on an internal surface of a cylinder and forming a substantially helical groove on an outer surface of the cylinder.

    Abstract: An improved centrifugally-cast tube is provided, along with a related method and apparatus of making the tube. The tube includes a plurality of grooves and bosses that are mechanically machined into an interior surface of the tube, such as by a broaching process. The profile of grooves and bosses may be defined by a plurality of intersecting concave and convex radii. The tube is resistant to creep, carburization and metal dusting. The tube also has an enhanced heat transfer rate, and a desirable surface roughness. A method of making the tube is also provided. The method essentially consists of mechanically deforming the interior surface of the tube by passing a series of cutting inserts on support rings having incrementally-differing dimensions over the interior surface.

    Abstract: An improved tool assembly for enhancing the surface of a heat transfer tube is provided. The tool assembly includes rods having cutting tips and positioned in rod guides which are slidably positioned in shafts provided in a tool holder. In an equilibrium state, the cutting tips do not extend from the tool holder. When a force is applied to the rod guides, the rod guides move in a first direction along the shafts in the tool holder, resulting in exposure of the cutting tips which enhance the tube surface. When the force is removed from the rod guides, the rod guides move along the shafts in a direction opposite the first direction to retract the cutting tips within the tool holder. In this way, the cutting tips are protected when not in use.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a producing method which allows low-cost and highly productive production of a seamless tube with a grooved inner surface having a smooth outer surface and an inner surface formed with plural types of grooves such that a protrusion is not formed at the produced seamless tube with a grooved inner surface. The tube is reduced in diameter by using a die and a plug. Then, the outer surface of the tube is pressed against a grooved plug by means of a pair of rolls such that a groove is formed in a portion of the inner surface of the tube. The process flattens the cross-sectional configuration of the tube in the direction in which the tube is pressed with the rolls. Subsequently, a sizing process using a die is performed with respect to the tube such that the tube has a generally circular configuration.

    Abstract: This invention is a process for making micro-multiport tubing for use in automobile air conditioner heat exchangers. The tubing is a flat body with a row of side-by-side passageways, which are separated by upright webs. Processing of this tubing involves extrusion, a straightening and cutting operation, assembly and furnace brazing of the condenser. This invention improves the grain size of the metal in the tubing and also improves the metallurgical strength of the tubing. Ports are formed in the tubing during extrusion. These ports are separated by webs and the webs are extruded so that they have a reduced thickness at their centers. In response to successive cold working of the body, the webs are changed in shape to a more uniform thickness state. Stated other wise, in this invention, the webs are initially of hour glass shape such that when there is five percent change in material thickness, the strain is concentrated at the center of the web and results in at least fifteen percent cold work.
