Reduction In Diameter Patents (Class 72/370.25)
  • Publication number: 20040065134
Abstract: A method for draw forming a desired contour to the outer diameter of a tubular workpiece provides that the selected workpiece have a wall thickness uniform throughout its length or a combination of uniform thicknesses at end portions with a mid portion of a tapering wall thickness. The outer diameter of selected workpiece is reduced along essentially only a part of the starting tubular metal blank by drawing the metal blank only partly through a contoured die or only partly through each one of a succession of contoured dies.

  • Patent number: 6561001
Abstract: A method of fabricating a circular-shaped metal structure, includes the steps of (a) rotating a pipe around an axis thereof, the pipe being composed of a plastic-workable metal, and (b) applying drawing to an outer wall of the pipe with the pipe being kept rotated, to reduce a wall thickness of the pipe and lengthen a wall of the pipe. A resultant circular-shaped metal structure fabricated by the method could have a thickness equal to or smaller than 0.09 mm.

  • Patent number: 6536255
Abstract: This invention is a process for making micro-multiport tubing for use in heat exchangers. The tubing is a flat body with a row of side-by-side passageways, which are separated by upright webs. Processing of this tubing involves extrusion, a straightening and cutting operation, a rolling step to reduce the thickness of the flat body and to obtain ultra small voids, assembly and furnace brazing of the heat exchanger. This invention improves the grain size of the metal in the tubing and also improves the metallurgical strength of the tubing. There is at least 10 percent change in material thickness. The strain is concentrated at the center of the web and results in at least enough cold work to produce fine recrystallized grains during the brazing thermal cycle. The amount of grain growth is controlled and the improvement in the metallurgical strength is achieved.

  • Patent number: 6453536
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing hollow nickel titanium profiles with a small external diameter and/or small wall thickness by means of deformation, especially extrusion. According to the inventive method, a composite block is formed, comprising a solid core and one or several hollow blocks surrounding said core. The core and the hollow blocks are made of nickel titanium. The parts of the composite block are separated after deformation to obtain a wire (3a), a tube (1a) with a small diameter and a tube (5a) with a larger diameter.

  • Patent number: 6257041
Abstract: A method for forming a one-piece steering shaft member, such as an externally splined male steering shaft member (or yoke shaft) or an internally splined female steering shaft member (or slip yoke) is disclosed. A hollow cylindrical tube is initially provided which is preferably formed from a blank of a metallic material, such as aluminum, having an elongation factor of at least fifteen percent. It is desirable that the tube have a uniform wall thickness and define an outer diameter which is substantially uniform along the length thereof. The outer diameter of one end of the tube is reduced from its original diameter while the outer diameter of the opposite end is maintained at its original diameter. A splined surface is formed in the reduced diameter end portion of the tube. The splined surface is formed on the external surface of the yoke shaft and on the internal surface of the slip yoke. A yoke member is then formed in the opposite end of the tube.

  • Patent number: 6230540
Abstract: A tubular axle having a spindle and a bearing shoulder is formed directly into heat-treated tubing. The method generally includes a heating operation, and a two stage forming operation. The first operation is to induction heat a steel tubular axle blank to a temperature less than 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. The next operation includes forcing a preform die assembly onto the tubular blank to reduce a length of the blank to a second diameter while forming an intermediate section having a first and second ramped section. The final operation includes forcing an upset die assembly onto the end of the blank to form a gathered material section formed intermediate the first ramped section and the second ramped section. The second diameter provides a pre-machined diameter for the final axle spindle and the gathered material section provides a pre-machined area for the final integral bearing shoulder.
