Abstract: The invention includes apparatus and method for lubricating and cooling a workpiece, dies or ironing rings, and punch at the interface between the workpiece and such dies or ironing rings and punch in forming a workpiece into a hollow closed end cylindrical article.A lubricant liquid phase is injected into a coolant liquid phase to form a "dispersion" prior to application to the metal-tool interface. Providing the lubricant as a dispersion in the coolant liquid phase rather than as an emulsion provides several advantages. The quantity of lubricant and the time of lubricant injection can be varied to control lubricity and, thus, friction. The invention makes it possible to achieve differential friction in the ironing process by having higher lubricity on the ironing die (low friction) and lower lubricity on the punch surface (high friction). Lubricities and cooling are controllable for the specific metal forming process employed to produce closed end hollow body containers.

  • Patent number: 4655065
Abstract: A plug for use in the plug drawing of hollow tubes or other stock. A flexible and deformable seal is mounted on the rearward part of the plug. In its relaxed state this seal allows easy insertion of the plug into the stock before drawing begins. In its deformed state, which it is caused to adopt in use, it effectively seals the rearward end of a cylindrical clearance between the plug and the stock, so enabling this clearance to be filled with pressurized lubricant to improve drawing efficiency. The lubricant is supplied through passages formed in the plug and connected to a hollow conduit extending backwards within the undrawn stock. The conduit may be flexible, or may be rigid and then act as a plug bar. The plug may be in two parts which are caused, as drawing begins, to move relative to each other and in so doing to deform the seal.

  • Patent number: 4586365
Abstract: In the automatic transport of workpieces in drop-forging presses, the workpiece is moved by a transporting device from one die to the next die in accordance with strokes. The dies are kept clean by blasting and spraying. Two dies are located at each work station and used for the same operating step of the transport mechanism. The transporting includes two respective pairs of workpiece gripping members and has a transport path corresponding to the distance between the different work stations. The output of the press is doubled since it is possible to carry out simultaneous cleaning of the tools by blasting and spraying for each operation of the press.

  • Patent number: 4520643
Abstract: The assembly for blowing out and spraying dies in a forging press is particularly adapted both to automatically operating and hand operated drop-forging presses. The automatically operating drop forging presses have workpiece transport effected by a walking beam transport system. The blowing and spraying assembly comprises arms having nozzles disposed at the end thereof to be guided into the mold area of the forging press in a timed sequence while avoiding the movement of the press plunger and walking beam transport system when it is being used. The blowing and spraying assembly comprises a carrier means hinged to a four-bar linkage arrangement which has two levers and a carrier member. In a specific embodiment, the ends of the two levers facing away from the carrier member are pivotably mounted to a housing. The housing constitutes a carrier support means secured to the stator of the forging press.

  • Patent number: 4467629
Abstract: A steel strip is first passed longitudinally in a predetermined travel direction through a nip between a pair of parallel rolls, and then passed downstream in the direction from the rolls over a sensor that engages the strip at a plurality of zones spaced apart on the strip transverse to the direction. The sensor generates respective output signals corresponding to the deviations from planarity of the strip at the zones. A treatment liquid is sprayed uniformly and at a relatively high temperature on the rolls while respective streams of a coolant liquid at a relatively low temperature are directed at regions of the rolls corresponding to the zones. The heat exchange between the streams and the rolls is varied in accordance with the respective output signals to thermally change the diameters of the rolls in the respective regions and thereby eliminate the deviations in planarity detected by the sensor.
