Abstract: A method can be used to produce a component from a sandwich material in sheet or strip form, which sandwich material comprises at least two metallic surface layers and a plastic layer disposed between the metallic surface layers. The method may involve at least partially heating the sandwich material along an edge region to soften the plastic in the edge region. The plastic may then be substantially completely displaced out of the edge region by exerting a force on at least one of the metallic surface layers. In this way a plastic-free edge region is produced in which the metallic surface layers are in contact in sub-regions or at points. Further, a component comprised of a sandwich material may include at least two metallic surface layers and a plastic layer disposed between the metallic surface layers. The sandwich material may have, at least along one edge, a plastic-free region in which the metallic surface layers are in contact in sub-regions or at points.

Abstract: Sheet metal workpieces are preheated to a temperature in the range of about 100° C. to about 500° C. for warm forming between press-actuated forming dies. The forming dies are not heated, but are coated with a liquid lubricating material suitable for the forming of the preheated sheet metal workpiece. For example, the liquid lubricating material is suitably a halogenated hydrocarbon that will adhere to unheated die surfaces and serve in the forming of the sheet metal workpiece into a vehicle body panel or other product. But the liquid lubricating material is composed so as to evaporate from surfaces of the formed workpiece at a temperature below about 200° C., so that the workpiece does not have to be cleaned before it is decoratively finished. The lubricant material may be vaporized, for example, into a warm stream of air or nitrogen and carried to a recovery or disposal system.

Abstract: A system for manufacturing wire having a mill and a finishing station configured to receive the wire output from the mill in a continuous fashion. The mill has first and second dies and first and second capstans. The first die is configured to receive a wire having a first cross-sectional area and to reduce the cross-sectional area of the wire as it passes through the first die. The first capstan is configured to receive the wire from the first die and apply a first force on the wire. The second die is configured to receive the wire from the first capstan and to further reduce the cross-sectional area of the wire as it passes through the second die. The second capstan is configured to receive the wire from the second die and apply a second force on the wire. The wire exits the mill having a second cross-sectional area that is smaller than the first cross-sectional area, and is finished by the finishing station.

  • Patent number: 8549889
Abstract: A metal forming process involves applying a lubricant, formed from a vitreous enamel mixed with particles of boron nitride, to at least one surface of a sheet metal blank, and without pre-heating the sheet metal blank, placing the sheet metal blank having the lubricant applied to the surface(s) thereof into a pre-heated forming tool so that the at least one surface contacts a surface of the forming tool. The method further involves, via the pre-heated forming tool, forming the sheet metal blank into a desired part shape, and during such forming, forming a lubricant layer on the surface(s) as the lubricant is heated from the pre-heated forming tool, the lubricant layer adhering to the surface(s) of the sheet metal blank.

Abstract: A heat-insulated wound hose is formed by a process, in which a metal wound hose manufactured in the conventional manner is at first upset, such that turns, which are spaced apart by adjacent axial wall areas of individual turns, form at least one uninterrupted jacket wall surface. A ceramic-based coating is subsequently applied to the at least one uninterrupted jacket wall surface. The coating is then cured, and the wound hose thus formed is subsequently pulled apart, whereby adjacent axial wall areas of adjacent turns are detached from one another and thereby the coating is broken up at partitions.
