Abstract: In a method of synchronizing first and second data streams, the first data stream acting as a reference stream, elements of the first data stream are displayed along a time line on a display device. Containers for elements of the second data stream are displayed on the display device alongside the elements of the first data stream. The containers are interactively displaced on the display device relative to the elements of the first data stream to align the containers with cue elements in the first data stream. Synchronization markers are generated for the aligned displayable elements relative to the first data stream.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for making two or more different video programs, such as live sports or news programs, available for viewing at the same time. At any given time, the viewer may actually be watching only one of, some of, or all of these programs, but has the ability to switch attention from program to program, without missing the content of any of the programs. This is accomplished by placing all of the program streams in storage, and allowing the viewer to selectively watch one program while suspending the playback of the others. The user can select any of these program streams to watch, and can pause, replay, jump forward and backward in time to any desired portion of the selected program stream.

Abstract: In one embodiment of the invention, a conventional home computer is connected via the Internet to a link broadcasting computer that is being accessed by many other households. The link broadcasting computer receives the same television signals (including ATVEF signals or other datacast signals) received by the home televisions of the various users. The link broadcasting computer detects the ATVEF signals embedded in the vertical blanking interval of each television channel and communicates to each user's home computer only the ATVEF information for the particular television channel(s) previously identified by the user. The user can then access a website identified by the information. Various options are further described herein.

Abstract: An MPEG-4 based multimedia system in connection with a service provider therefore, and a remote communication device therefore, is presented. The interactive content based remote communication unit simplifies and reduces the number of steps and buttons required for receiving interactive service by the use of MPEG-4 encoded data. Additionally, new ways are disclosed for the data processing at the service provider side. Further, an improved way of exchanging data between the service provider (broadcaster, cable provider) and the customer (viewer) is presented. Still further, there is disclosed how digital equipment (server, set-top box, remote control unit and display) involved in the data processing can be optimized for the task of controlling the available channel bandwidth and displaying the data.

According to the synchronizing process, programs enhanced with the contents are produced by sending command instructions to a transmission device and to a transmission server in a time-organized manner, and by incorporating forthwith the contents produced by the server into the programs produced by the device. Abstract: A virtual channel table for broadcasting protocol and a method for broadcasting by using the virtual channel table includes identification information identifying and permitting discrimination of active and inactive channels contained in the virtual channel table. At a receiver, the virtual channel table transmitted from the transmitting side is parsed, thereby determining whether the current received channel is an active or inactive channel.

Abstract: In response to a customer pressing a specifically-designated button, the customer is placed in communication with a customer support center associated with the content currently being displayed by the customer's interactive television system. The interactive television system receives the request for customer support, identifies a support center associated with the content, and establishes a two-way communication channel between the support center and the customer. The two-way communication channel may support audio, video, text, and other data exchanges. The two-way communication channel may be used to transmit a copy of the currently displayed content to the support center. The two-way communication channel may also be used to allow receive commands, such as key presses, mouse events, etc., from a support technician. The commands may be performed by the interactive television system as though they were initiated by the user.

Abstract: The system and method stores event data, including timing data associated with each event referenced against a reference time, in an index table within the memory of an integrated receiver decoder (IRD) such as a set-top-box. The event data is typically transmitted in advance of a broadcast signal received by the IRD and stored within IRD memory in anticipation of the broadcast program. The reference time is generated by any one of a variety of different means, such as by time date table, time plus offset table, or within a data (e.g. MPEG) stream. Time relative to the reference time, where the reference time can be periodically reset to accommodate interruptions or changes in the original broadcast programming to which the events are synchronized, are compared to the event times stored in memory. If a match occurs, the event triggers at that appropriate relative time.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed to dynamically generate and distribute a synchronized media presentation. The present invention provides for the automated retrieval, assembly and formatting of an enhanced media presentation and the synchronous delivery of that presentation. The enhancing content is synchronized so that its delivery coincides with a broadcast signal or other media program that it is designed to enhance without requiring that the enhancing content be physically bound to the media program. Another aspect of the invention is that the assembly and synchronization of the enhancing content is independent of the distribution channel and platform used to execute or display the enhanced content. As a result, the enhancing content can be formatted for a set-top box, a personal computer, a personal video recorder, an audio system or any other platform used to deliver a media program to a user.

Depending on the type of requested information a content provider obtains or supplies the user's desired information. The information is then transmitted to a common service platform. If necessary, the user's location can be automatically obtained in order to provide location specific information such as maps, directions, or addresses.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for operating a closed caption are disclosed. The apparatus for operating a closed caption includes an MPEG video processor for receiving a digital broadcast signal, detecting video information and PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol) information and processing it; a DTVCC decoder for extracting DTVCC information and analog CC information from the video information detected in the MPEG video processor and decoding the DTVCC information; and an analog CC decoder for receiving the analog CC information from the DTVCC decoder and decoding it. In providing a DTVCC service according to ATSC standards, the best closed service is provided under a given condition when there is an error in a broadcast station.

The instant messaging user interface includes a list of two or more network users selected by the first network user. The list shows presence information for at least a first selected network user and a second selected network user. The instant messaging user interface also includes distinct visual identifiers that are respectively associated with the first selected network user and the second selected network user on the instant messaging user interface and that each indicate television programming being viewed by the selected network user with which they are associated.

Abstract: A television system and method for facilitating use of closed caption text or other information that may be included in an extended data service (XDS) system. The system includes a tuner adapted to receive a television signal, the television signal including a video signal and an XDS signal, and a television display for displaying a video image corresponding to the video signal. A data slicer coupled to the tuner extracts the XDS signal from the television signal, and sends the XDS signal out a data port to a peripheral device, such as a text display. The text display may be used to display text information included in the XDS signal, such as closed caption and/or other information included in text fields of the XDS signal. Alternatively, a computer may be coupled to the data port to monitor information, such as URL data, in the XDS signal to access on-line information.

The server identifies messages in the server that have not been transferred to the workstation. The server transfers to the workstation the messages identified by the server. The server merges the message-related information transferred to it by the workstation and transfers a copy of the merged message-related information to the workstation.

Abstract: A decentralized approach to delivering a media file to a requesting subscriber in a network of subscribers comprises the steps of segmenting the media file into a plurality of segments and distributing the segments of the media file among the network of subscribers, and responding to a request from the requesting subscriber by directing to that requesting subscriber all of the plurality of segments of the media file. All of segments are assembled into the media file and displayed or stored by the requesting subscriber.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing interactive instructions directing a user how to establish interactivity between multiple consumer electronics devices. A first consumer electronics device is connected to the television set. The user is requested to identify another consumer electronics device to be connected to the first consumer electronics device or to the television set. The first consumer electronics device identifies the cables needed to establish the connection and then determines whether the user has the cables. If the user does not have the cables, they may be purchased online by the first consumer electronics device. Connection instructions describing how to establish the connection are displayed on the television set. After the user attempts to establish the connection, the first consumer electronics device optionally tests the connection to determine whether it is reliable and fully operable. If not, further instructions are displayed.

Abstract: An ITV system that monitors and stores data related to digital video broadcasts. Such data may include digital sound files, image files, subscription data, software programs, television program information, ITV advertising content, and the like. The monitoring system stores information about a pre-determined set of data that is being monitored in a digital video stream, in one or more log files. The log files may then be used to generate a plurality of user defined reports. The reports may be used by broadcasters, cable operators, and content providers, and the like to establish general auditing and billing services.

Abstract: Content which users may wish to receive may be distributed with interrupting content such that the use of the content on the user's receiver may be interrupted and replaced with the interrupting content. The content which the user wishes to receive may be software, audio, video, graphics or other material and the interrupting content in one embodiment of the prevent invention may be advertisements. In this way, the user's receiver may be utilized to determine when it is appropriate to interrupt the interruptible content with the interrupting content. This may provide a convenient mechanism for reduced price or free distribution of a wide variety of media currently provided only in physical form or only for free without any compensation to the content provider.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for recommending a schedule of events to a user is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment of the system and method, each channel schedule is broken down into time slices. A novel fuzzy-now recommendation-time value is calculated for each time slice. This fuzzy-now recommendation-time value is a two dimensional value measured in units of recommendation-time, or “enjoyment minutes”. By means of the calculated fuzzy-now recommendation-time values, recommended schedules may be generated using a wide variety of selection methods.

One or more automation control objects are positioned onto a control interface to build a macro element template. Build information is associated with each automation control object to assign a variable name, device type, property page field(s), and variable naming table. A replicator control interface allows a range of sources to be assigned to the macro element template, and is associated with executable instructions for building the macro element library. The macro element library includes user-defined filenames that enables a director to quickly search and select a desired macro element. Changes in production values ripple throughout the macro element library to dynamically update the macro elements.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system for displaying targeted information based upon preference and/or demographic data. In one embodiment, generalized triggers are sent to a set-top box which contains the preference and/or demographic data. Downloaded addresses of targeted information are selected based upon the trigger and the preference and/or demographic data. Targeted data is then downloaded from a selected site for display to a viewer. In another embodiment, the preference and/or demographic data is stored at an upstream source. In another embodiment, multiple triggers are transmitted to the set-top box which then selects an address of targeted information from the multiple triggers based upon the preference and/or demographic data.

A content provider, such as a broadcaster of a sports event, packages a television program into digital packets, and transmits the packets over the Internet to subscribers, from a first location. The content provider periodically pauses in transmitting the packets, to allow advertisers to transmit advertising messages during the pauses, from a second location. Arrangements are provided to synchornize the content provider and the advertisers.

Broadcast information is broadcast from a remote location on a secondary network containing video over the secondary network to a location thereon proximate the location of the user PC. Unique information is encoded in the broadcast information representative of a location on the primary network of the remote node. The broadcast information is received and displayed on a video display at the location on the secondary network proximate the user PC. The user PC is connected to the remote node utilizing the unique information, and in accordance thereto, in response to receiving the unique information encoded within the broadcast information broadcast over the secondary network.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for generation of interactive programming. An interactive programming server embeds interactive components into a video signal. The interactive programming server receives content from a content source and interactive components from an interactive component source and uses the content and interactive components to generate an interactive Video On Demand (iVOD) interactive program. The iVOD interactive program is transmitted to a participant who views the content and interacts with the interactive components of the iVOD interactive program. The participant's responses to the content is transmitted back to the interactive programming server where the participant responses are incorporated into new content which is used to generate new iVOD interactive programming.

Abstract: The interactive multimedia devices is based on network structures involving: a broadcasting network (120) and a return path network (140). On the broadcasting network, the interactive data are multiplexed with the broadcast audiovisual signals so as to offer interactivity to connected end-users on the return path network. To address specific sociological profiles, and to save bandwidth, a plurality of filters, let's say a number N, is associated with a single interactive application. In such case, the comparison continues until one of the N filters match the profile stored in the terminal permanent memory. If one of the filters matches the viewer's profile, the interactive application is executed, else the application is ignored. In this way, a plurality of categories of viewers can interact. A plurality of filters can be associated with an interactive application with different contents. To each filter corresponds a content.

Abstract: Described are methods and apparatus for encouraging viewers to pay attention to television programs, commercials in particular, by offering viewers some incentive to watch. In one embodiment, viewers are notified that they can receive frequent-flier miles for answering one or more simple questions at the conclusion of the commercial. To verify that the viewer paid attention to the commercial, the answer to the question may be based on the content of the commercial. A sponsor might ask, for example, that the viewer identify the name of the sponsor or the color of an announcer's shirt. A correct answer indicates that the viewer watched the commercial, and that the viewer is therefore entitled to some reward. For example, viewers who watch the commercial may be entered in a prize drawing, or may receive prize points, such as frequent-flier miles. In other embodiments, viewers may verify that they watched a given program by selecting an icon or pressing a button on a remote control.

Abstract: A system and method for creating a virtual media channel including video, audio, multimedia, or other data, at or near the point of reception by end users remotely controls an operation of an end user receiving device. The present invention remotely controls an input source selection at the end user receiving device in a coordinated manner. These input sources may include terrestrial digital broadcast stations, direct broadcast satellites, other broadband data networks, data stored at the end user receiving device, internet content, multimedia files, and other programs or programming. By synchronizing the delivery of programs and programming from various sources and by remotely controlling the input source selection of the end user receiving device, the present invention provides for highly efficient integration of local and national broadcast signals, programs or programming available on other broadband networks, and programs and programming stored at the end user"s receiving device.

Abstract: A system for outputting a media stream and supplemental media streams is provided. A media stream manager outputs the media stream and associated supplemental media streams on a media stream output device. A timing module generates triggering events in conjunction with the output of the media streams according to event data. The media stream manager monitors for and detects the triggering events during the output of the media streams. Upon detecting a triggering event, the media stream manager determines which supplemental media streams are associated with the triggering event and iteratively outputs each associated supplemental media stream to the media stream output device. Supplemental media streams are output either synchronously or asynchronously according to previously determined information. A supplemental media stream that is output asynchronously to the media stream suspends the media stream and the timing of the media stream while the supplemental media stream is output.

The storage device also includes at least one supplemental memory for containing at least a portion of a directory of the data contained in the holographic media. By locating directory information for the holographic media in a supplemental memory, areas of the holographic media that have not yet been written to can be determined prior to accessing the holographic media. In this way, activating photo-sensitive agents in unwritten areas of the holographic media can be avoided unless these areas are being written to.

The audio/video signals having triggers in the vertical blanking intervals are stored in the storage medium, and during playback by a stream simulator unit, simulate a Transport Type A transmission, transformed from the Transport Type B transmission. Requested resources may be retrieved from the storage medium or from the network by a proxy unit of the receiver unit.

A plurality of advertising contract records are stored at the theater server, where each advertising contract record identifies at least one content item. The advertising contract records include scheduling data associated with that particular content item, wherein the scheduling data includes at least one item of information that correlates to a particular presentation criterion that must be satisfied when the content is presented. Theatre schedule information indicates particular feature presentations that will be presented in particular auditoriums and includes the scheduling information including at least one attribute of the feature presentation.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an interactive medium and a method for managing additional contents synchronously outputted with audio/video (A/V) data in an interactive digital versatile disk (I-DVD). A player in which an interactive disk is seated accesses a server providing the additional contents of the A/V data recorded on the interactive disk before the interactive disk is reproduced, and receives updated information of the additional contents from the server. The player refers to the received updated information and determines whether an arbitrary file contained in an additional content list associated with the A/V data has been updated. The player makes a request for an original file contained in the list or an updated file designated in the updated information, and receives the requested original or updated file. Therefore, the player can always receive additional contents containing the updated file. According to this operation, the server enables the additional contents to be conveniently updated.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a method of processing packet data between a video server and clients, and more particularly to a method of transmitting packet data to a plurality of clients related to different data rates from a video server that employs a real-time moving image compression method. In the method of processing packet data between a video server and a plurality of clients of the present invention, the video server is implemented as a moving image compression video server including a camera, an image acquiring unit, a moving image compressor, a stream server and a network interface, and the clients are connected to the video server through different paths. Abstract: The invention relates to a method of forcing a user to view a first announcement, when a user prevents a second announcement, embedded in a stream of audiovisual information, to be shown on a display, where the first announcement and the second announcement are equivalent to each other. The announcement may be a commercial. This prevention can be achieved either by skipping the announcement or by zapping to a different channel. The invention further relates to an apparatus capable of detecting whether a user has viewed an announcement or whether he has skipped it. The apparatus is also capable of displaying a second announcement which is equivalent to the skipped announcement.
