Abstract: A method and system whereby conventional television advertisements (i.e., those delivered to viewers while they watch television programming) can be delivered in conjunction with and correlated with advertisements that are presented to viewers in the Interactive Program Guide (IPG). Moreover, the invention described herein provides for delivering highly targeted ads to viewers in both conventional programming avails and in the IPG, and for linking the targeted ads in these two media to provide for enhanced and highly effective advertising campaigns.

Abstract: A method for providing a widget service using a media service providing apparatus is provided. A method for providing the widget service includes operations of scanning channels providing media services therethrough; determining whether or not there is an available channel among the scanned channels for allocating a widget service; if it is determined that there is the available channel, allocating the widget service to the available channel; and providing the widget service allocated to the available channel. Accordingly, a widget service is provided without disturbing a user viewing a television (TV), increasing user convenience.

Abstract: The technology is a system and method for generating a virtual channel in an electronic program guide. Scheduling instructions, which are configured by a user, indicate content that should be presented for selection in the virtual channel. The scheduling instructions are executed in priority order. The virtual channel is populated with content descriptions based on the execution of the scheduling instructions. After the virtual channel is initially populated with content, broadcasting gaps in the virtual channel are identified. In one embodiment, each broadcasting gap is populated with other content based on a broadcast gap setting set by the user. In another embodiment, each broadcasting gap remains an empty schedule entry in the virtual channel. An electronic document associated with the virtual channel may be published to a third-party website so that other users may subscribe to the virtual channel.

Abstract: A method for displaying an electronic program guide (EPG) to a viewer. The method includes displaying one or more data slices representative of broadcast programming to a viewer. In response to input from the viewer, the displayed number of data slices is increased, for example, from one slice to two slices. In browser mode the viewer can scroll through multiple EPG data slices without selecting to view full mode EPG, while in full mode the EPG can expand from a single column of data slices to multiple columns of data slices based upon viewer selections. The EPGs of the present invention can display programming that a viewer is more likely to watch at a particular time than other programming. A data slice representing the predicted programming can be inserted into the EPG so that the viewer can identify programming that is likely to be of interest.

Abstract: According to the invention, a method for generating a personalized menu promoting other video programs available from a video content delivery system is disclosed. The video content delivery system provides a plurality of channels of video content simultaneously. In one step, it is determined that a triggering event has occurred with a video content delivery conduit. First information about one or more users is gathered. The one or more users are associated with an account with the video content delivery system. Alternative video programs are determined and personalized for the one or more users based, at least in part, upon the first information. The context for the triggering event is analyzed to produce second information. A configuration of the personalized menu is determined based, at least in part, upon the second information. The personalized menu is formulated for presentment to the one or more users. The personalized menu comprises links to the alternative video programs.

Abstract: The present invention includes a system and method for combining television broadcast programming content with customized or personalized information and educational or entertainment content. The system includes a set-top box capable of receiving data transmissions and locally rendering video animation for display with, instead of and/or synchronized with television broadcast programs in a way that the television viewer sees a coherent seamless merging of the television program content and supplemental content sources in an indistinguishable format. Preferably, the viewer may interact in real-time with the enhanced television programming to provide a higher level of engagement and customization potential.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed by which contents can be provided in accordance with the preference of a user. A selection control section of a contents providing apparatus selects sub contents conforming to a preference of a user from within a contents server based on static preference information of the user stored in a preference information storage section. A QoS controller adjusts the sub contents based on meta information included in the sub contents and transmits the adjusted sub contents to a user terminal apparatus through a sender section. The user terminal apparatus reproduces the sub contents and extracts and transmits dynamic preference information of the user for the reproduced sub contents to the contents providing apparatus. The QoS controller adjusts next sub contents based on the dynamic preference information and meta information included in the next sub contents. The invention can be applied to a system which provides contents.

Abstract: In content distribution, even if a reservation for a distribution channel and a distribution time slot is not performed before a predetermined time is reached, in response to a real-time distribution reservation request from a user PC, a predetermined time period including a current time at which the request is received is reserved in a channel which is unoccupied at the current time. A reservation setting information file concerning the reservation is also transmitted to the user PC, and reservation data is sent to a server-use reservation management center. Thus, the content received from the user PC is immediately distributed to clients via a streaming server according to the reservation setting information file.

Abstract: A transmitting system for transmitting contents data, meta data, and meta data schema. A meta data schema that represents the structure of meta data of contents data is stored in a meta data schema storing portion. A contents segmenting portion generates segmentation data for selecting a particular segment from successive contents data supplied from a contents storing portion and supplies the generated segmentation data to a meta data combining portion. The meta data combining portion correlates meta data with corresponding segmentation data in a format corresponding to the structure of the meta data schema, combines the meta data with the segmentation data, and outputs the combined data. The meta data schema, meta data with segmentation data, and contents data are converted in a transmission format.

Abstract: A method for remotely accessing selected content can include receiving a list of content separate from a video stream. The list of content can include content previously recorded according to a user-defined recording schedule. The method can further include sending a request for content selected from the list of content, receiving the content through a network, and displaying the content.

Abstract: There is provided a digital broadcasting receiver capable of making channel selection without making a user conscious of the difference between a physical channel number and a virtual channel number. A CPU uses an OSD display circuit, for example, to display a menu screen, and causes a user to select either a first mode or a second mode. The first mode is a mode for making channel selection by the physical channel number in which a frequency is assigned to a channel by the physical channel number in accordance with a rule, and a second mode is a mode for making channel selection by the virtual channel number in which a frequency corresponds to a channel on the side of the receiver. The CPU automatically makes, when no channel selection can be made by the entered channel number in the selected mode, an attempt to make channel selection corresponding to the other mode.

Abstract: This invention provides a program information display control apparatus and method, a remote control device, a program, and a storage medium, which can simultaneously display the contents and detailed information of specific programs that follow predetermined rules such as a time band, genre, and the like. To this end, detailed program information associated with each of programs to be displayed on an EPG is acquired from an antenna (1101) and tuner (1102). The acquired program information is stored in a memory (1150) via a decoder (1103). A viewer designates programs, details of which are to be displayed, using a remote controller (12), and the memory (1150) is searched for detailed program information of a plurality of designated programs. An image controller (1121) simultaneously displays a plurality of pieces of program information associated with these designated programs at their display positions on the EPG displayed on a display unit (1122).

A software module for storage on a computer and operable by the computer is provided to receive a media request for a media selection from a media source including video and audio data. The media selection is retrieved, and a media signal conveying the media selection is communicated. A communications hub receives the media signal and transmits the media selection for play on a remote media device. A receiver configured to communicate with the communications hub and with the remote media device receives the media selection and communicates the media selection to the remote media device for play. A set of media preferences associated with an identifier allows for selectable access to media content. A plurality of remote interfaces each can be coded for generating an identifier, whereby using a particular remote interface invokes a set of media preferences.

Abstract: An improved interactive network system is provided that allows the Network Operator to control the transfer of information to and from the network end users, the system preferably using triggers or markers embedded within the programming broadcast to users via the network. As a consequence of this system, the Network Operator is able to efficiently garner revenues from third parties transacting business over the network and to control the look and feel of programming offered to network users. Additionally the system can be used as a means of limiting network access, filtering programming, providing on-screen graphics or audible signals for particular programming types or providers, bookmarking programming, profiling network users, targeting advertising, and simplifying network transactions.

Abstract: EPG services are provided, which enables a device such as a computer, a set top box or the like to collect EPG data from multiple EPG data providers or sources. The EPG data is collected at the device by EPG loaders. Each EPG loader collects EPG data from a particular source. The EPG loaders deliver the EPG data to a writer module, which performs scaling and formatting functions to the EPG data. The writer module also stores the scaled and formatted EPG data in a database or other storage. Once stored, applications gain access to the EPG data through a control module. The writer module may also be implemented by chaining EPG loaders in a priority scheme. However, EPG loader interaction reduces independence and forces more rigid interface and implementation constraints upon the design of EPG loaders. The control module provides the accessed EPG data to the applications. EPG services function to isolate the operation of the applications from the EPG data sources.

Abstract: This method facilitates an operation of selecting one program from among a plurality of programs, each having the substantially same content without placing burden on the user, and in particular, an operation of extracting an upward compatible program. The method retrieves a program scheduled to be broadcast having the same content as a pre-recorded program and extracts a difference between the pre-recorded program and the scheduled program and, in the event that the difference satisfies a predetermined criterion of determination, notifies the result to the user. When the difference is extracted, the method gives a plurality of meta data related to each program the order of priority based on information of user's taste and compares the meta data corresponding to each other and extracts an upward compatible program based on the order of priority and the comparison result.

Abstract: A system and a method for program recommendation are described. In order to present a user a recommendation for a choice of audio or video content pieces broadcast consecutively at a plurality of different channels, (a) piece scores of content pieces are calculated, indicating a match of a corresponding content description with a profile, (b) and sequence scores are calculated for a plurality of sequences of content pieces, said sequence scores being based at least on said piece scores and on a correlation of content descriptions of at least two pieces contained in the sequence. A recommended sequence is chosen according to the sequence score. Preferably, one or, more preferred sequences are shown to the user in a lattice representation.

Abstract: A network server comprises a controller that creates and distributes an electronic guide to the members of an affinity group based on the presence statuses of one or more of the group members. The electronic guide identifies the title and location of one or more media files stored in a home system of the group members. The group members may view the electronic guide, and select a media file to render on their own home system.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed that generate television program recommendations based on queries that have previously been performed by a user on an electronic program guide. A conventional program recommender score for a given program is adjusted according to the degree of correlation between the attribute-value pairs that define the program and the attribute-value pairs that have previously been searched by the user. A historical search database indicates the number of times each attribute-value pair appears in a user query and provides additional information regarding the preferences of the user. Higher frequency counts for certain attribute-value pairs imply the user's preference for programs conforming to such criteria.

Abstract: A client terminal providing an on-screen program guide that allows a user to easily navigate through program guide information within a pop-up for different programs on a selected channel. A head end provides program guide information (PGI) to the client terminal. The PGI includes first program data (FPD) associated with a first program and second program data (SPD) associated with a second program. The client terminal includes a terminal controller responsive to an on-screen display control program that causes: the display of channel identifiers, the selection of one of the channel identifiers in response to a first input, and the display of a pop-up for the selected channel identifier. The pop-up displays the FPD associated with the first program in response to the first input. In response to a second input, the pop-up displays the SPD associated with the second program.

The program guide system also allows the designation of at least one of the available media types as a preferred media type for a current viewing session independently from designating a favorite channel. In addition, a user has the option of navigating among only favorite channels of the preferred media types.

For example, software for providing network-based video over a television can provide a graphical user interface (GUI) to the television for presentation to a viewer. Then, in response to input through the GUI, the software can identify a plurality of remote video content providers and provide a video from one of the remote video content providers over a computer network to the television. This software may be communicably coupled with a central repository that stores information associated with a plurality of remote video content providers. Software associated with the repository may query the repository in response to a request from the remote client. This “repository” software can provide information associated with a subset of the plurality of remote video content providers, selected based on the query, to the remote client.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods and systems for accessing services in a television system. In one embodiment, a DHCT presents a subscriber an EPG presentation containing a plurality of selectable bi-directional services that are purchasable for a period of time and rendered to a buying subscriber on an individualized basis as offered by the cable television system. The subscriber navigates an EPG menu presentation with an input device such as a remote control device and selects a purchasable service by choosing the visual representation that corresponds to the desired service. The DHCT receives the user input, translates the selected command into an executable program call that queries service availability and, if the service is available, initiates the selected bi-directional audiovisual service on a personalized session.

Abstract: There is disclosed a media file distribution system and method. An asset management and delivery system and method for the distribution of digital files and data is provided. There are two major functions, with sub-functions within each. The system first serves as a fully automated management system for a company involved in video/file distribution, such as in video on demand (VOD) or other digital file industries. The system can ingest, prepare, schedule, transmit, track and report on any aspect of the business chain. Secondly, it also serves as a product for both content providers and recipients to be able to view, manage and run their entire content offering remotely from anywhere through the Internet.

The interactive television program guide provides a user with the opportunity to select a language for playing television programming and displaying program guide text. Television program audio in the desired language may be obtained from a SAP or digital audio track and played in the selected language. Television related information in the desired language may be obtained from a digital track. If television program audio or related information is not provided in the selected language, the program guide may use a default language. The program guide may coordinate program guide display screen text with languages available for television programs when the programs are broadcast to users.

Abstract: Systems and methods for effectively hiding or disabling rarely used features and capabilities of a television so such features do not disturb the daily ease of use of the television and unauthorized users are prevented from changing settings and degrading the performance of the television. The television system preferably can be setup or programmed to work in either an “advanced mode” or a “daily use mode.” In the advanced mode, a user or installer is provided access to both all setup and all daily use functionality or features of the television. In the daily use mode, the overall user interface is optimized to avoid cluttering the menu system with features not needed for daily use. Users can operate all the features of the television necessary for daily use without altering any of the “authorized user only” settings and the less technically skilled will enjoy improved ease of use.

Abstract: The invention aims to protect content copyright and reduce the load on a stream server device in a stream distribution system having the stream server device, which stores bitstreams that include contents and control information necessary for image playback of contents, a plurality of terminal devices that playback received bitstreams, and a cache server device that mediates between these devices. A header separation unit in the stream server device separates header information, which is control information, from a bitstream stored in a storage unit. A data transmitting unit transmits the bitstream from which header information has been removed to the cache server device before a predetermined time, and transmits the header information to the cache server device at the predetermined time. The cache server device transmits a bitstream that combines the bitstream, which was received first, and the header information, which was received later, to a terminal device.

Abstract: A microprocessor in a digital broadcast receiver outputs image data displaying a menu in a sub-screen when instructed by a user to display the menu: if received broadcast signals are those of an HD broadcast, and if the image format of a television, to which data are output, is 1080i or higher, and further if the screen size of the television, to which data are output, is 37 inch or larger; namely if characters in the menu are unlikely to be corrupted even when the television displays the menu in the sub-screen, and if there is no possibility that characters in the menu become too small to be identifiable. Thereby, it becomes possible for the television to display the menu in the sub-screen if the user can identify characters in the menu even when the television displays the menu in the sub-screen. Accordingly, the user can input setting of menu items while watching broadcast images.

Abstract: A disclosed set top box (STB) suitable for use in presenting multimedia content is operable to receive multimedia content from a provider content source that is remotely connected to the STB via a provider network. The STB is also operable to receive multimedia content from a personal content source. The personal content source is locally connected to the STB or connected to the STB via a public network. The STB is operable to identify a channel indicated by a remote control signal and determine whether the indicated channel is a provider content channel or a personal content channel. The STB streams multimedia content from the first source when the indicated channel is a provider content channel and from the personal source when the indicated channel is a personal channel. The content from the provider content source and the personal content may be received through different STB interfaces. The personal content may be received from a locally connected source.

Abstract: There is provided an audio reproducing apparatus and a music selection method which can quickly search for desired music data from a large number of music data recorded on a recording medium such as a hard disk. When a rotary encoder is rotated at a low speed, a display mode is set to a low speed search mode, and a title of music data at a position being searched is displayed on a display unit. When the rotary encoder is rotated at a high speed, the display mode is changed to a high speed search mode, information common to music data at a position being searched and successive music data, such as a folder name of a folder storing these music data, an album name, an artist name, and/or a recorded date, is displayed on the display unit.

Abstract: In a subscriber television system, assigning categories to a channel as an entity reduces the searching requirements associated with searching a database of thousands of individual program records, identifying the channel on which an identified program will be displayed, and then sorting the resultant information. The channel information is searched for the assigned category information and the associated program information for just those channels is retrieved. This reduces the processor requirements for searching the thousands of records in the program records database. With the reduced processor requirements and the increased efficiency of information organization for searching, a single machine state change is possible between viewing full screen video and a browse banner or between viewing full screen program information and video with a browse banner.

A first panel is displayed in response to a first signal from a user interface. The first panel is displayed on another portion of the display simultaneously with the video. The first panel contains information from at least one of a plurality of records, the records containing programming information, each of the records having an associated time and an associated channel, and the first panel having an associated time range and an associated range of channels. A new record is selected in response to a second signal from a user interface. A second panel is displayed simultaneously with the video, the second panel having an associated time range that is different than the associated time range of the first panel and the second panel having an associated range of channels that is the same as the associated range of channels of the first panel.

Abstract: A method that incorporates a detailed, precise procedure of designing a user interface by utilizing agent behavioral models. This method applies quantitative and qualitative agent behavioral models derived through the Categorize Describe-Model (CDM) methodology to the iterative design stage of interface development. The method includes: (1) categorizing at least two users; (2) validating targeted user behaviors and preferences; (3) capturing emergent behaviors and preferences; (4) tracking design requirements and implementations; (5) accommodating diversity in performance and preference during interactive testing; and (6) customizing a user interface design to each of the at least two users.

In one embodiment, the first threshold and the second threshold are updated upon the viewer returning to a schedule list more than a predetermined number of times.

Retrieval is carried out for each time zone. Thus, a program of a predetermined broadcast time can be quickly retrieved.

Abstract: A method of selecting a portion of a block of data for display based on characteristics of a display device. The method comprises several steps. In the first step, a block of Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data is received at a communication device adapted to process this data. Next, an input is received at the communication device regarding an appearance of the display device. The communication device can be a set-top box. The appearance of the display includes, but is not limited to, the resolution, the aspect ratio (AR), and the physical size of the display. Based on these inputs, the communication device next selects a portion, more or fewer columns or rows, of the block of EPG data to be displayed on the display device. The portion of the EPG data selected is formatted and communicated to the display device, e.g. television, for viewing by the user.

Abstract: An interactive television program guide system based on multiple user television equipment devices in a single household is provided. The system provides a user with an opportunity to adjust program guide settings with a given one of the interactive television program guides. The system coordinates the operation of the interactive television program guides so that the program guide settings that were adjusted with the given interactive television program guide are used by the other interactive television program guides. Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of composing a user menu by providing a shortened route to the menu the user selected among a hierarchically structured On Screen Display menu so that the user can find a menu he or she wants more conveniently. The method comprises the steps of deciding whether an item is optionally selected out of the hierarchically structured OSD menu items; deciding whether a user menu registration button for the optionally selected item is pressed; registering the selected menu with the user menu by adding an index to the currently selected item once the user menu registration button is properly pressed; displaying the registered user menu on an OSD menu if a user view menu is established; actuating a corresponding menu item when an optional item is selected among the user menu; and deleting a menu item from the user menu if a deletion button is pressed on an optionally selected item out of the user menu.
