Abstract: Frequencies of viewing of first weekly broadcast programs by a user are detected in connection with past sections of the first weekly broadcast programs. At least one which has the detected viewing frequency greater than a predetermined threshold value is excluded from the first weekly broadcast programs to get second weekly broadcast programs. Program ranking measures representative of a relation between program attributes and user's preference are generated in response to (1) attributes of the past sections of the second weekly broadcast programs and (2) which of the past sections of the second weekly broadcast programs were viewed by the user. Future sections of the second weekly broadcast programs are ranked in response to (1) the generated program ranking measures and (2) attributes of the future sections of the second weekly broadcast programs.

Abstract: A system and method for resource sharing are provided. The method includes storing an electronic programming guide (EPG) application and an EPG, determining when local memory of a local video device lacks capacity to download additional time of the EPG, and communicating with another device to transmit a resource request to the other device to download the additional time of the EPG to storage in the other device. The method also includes processing for display monitoring data that indicates remaining storage space in the storage of the other device, querying the other device to determine what programming is being viewed, and processing controls included in the EPG application that enable access to the storage of the other device to interact with the EPG stored on the other device through the local video device to schedule a programming event at the local video device.

Abstract: EPG services are provided, which enables a device such as a computer, a set top box or the like to collect EPG data from multiple EPG data providers or sources. The EPG data is collected at the device by EPG loaders. Each EPG loader collects EPG data from a particular source. The EPG loaders deliver the EPG data to a writer module, which performs scaling and formatting functions to the EPG data. The writer module also stores the scaled and formatted EPG data in a database or other storage. Once stored, applications gain access to the EPG data through a control module. The writer module may also be implemented by chaining EPG loaders in a priority scheme. However, EPG loader interaction reduces independence and forces more rigid interface and implementation constraints upon the design of EPG loaders. The control module provides the accessed EPG data to the applications. EPG services function to isolate the operation of the applications from the EPG data sources.

In an implementation, a user interface (UI) for output by a client and for display by a display device includes a plurality of representation of content items and at least one pictorial representation. Each representation of a content item is selectable by a user to navigate to a corresponding content item. Each content item has a duration when streamed for output by the client. The at least one pictorial representation corresponds to a respective content item and indicates a time remaining in the duration of the respective content item.

The electronic message interface is adapted to link terms in an electronic message to program information in an electronic program guide (EPG). The electronic message interface comprises a receiver, a comparison unit, and a display device. The receiver is adapted to receive an electronic message.

Abstract: An electronic program guide (EPG) having a magnifying glass effect to enlarge the font size of a portion of the television program data presented in a grid format. The magnifying glass effect options are selected by the user. The magnifying glass effect can be stationary on the screen and have text scroll underneath it or it can be used in conjunction with the highlighting effect so that every highlighted item is magnified. The magnifying glass effect could always be in use, activated by the amount of time a field is highlighted, or activated by user input.

Abstract: Automatic selection, recording and meaningful labeling of tracks from broadcast media streams is provided. Content information which relates to tracks currently being played and/or to previously played tracks is used to guide selection of tracks to be recorded and to provide meaningful labels for recorded tracks. This content information does not provide an advance schedule of tracks to be played in the future. A segment is temporarily recorded from a selected media stream. The content information relating to tracks in the segment is compared with previous user input (i.e., track preferences) to select tracks within the segment to be recorded. For each selected track, clipping is performed to identify track start and end times. Clipped tracks are recorded onto a suitable long-term recording medium, and labeled with a meaningful label derived from the content information.

Abstract: The present invention is related to a system and method of caching data employing probabilistic predictive techniques. The system and method provides local storage of a subset of available viewing selections by assigning a value to a selection and retaining selections in the cache depending on the value and size of the selection. The value assigned to an item can represent the time-dependent likelihood that a user will review an item at some time in the future. An initial value of an item can be based on the user's viewing habits, the user's viewing habit over particular time segment and/or viewing habits of a group of user's during a particular time segment. A value assigned to a selection dynamically changes according to a set of cache retention policies, where the value can be time-dependent functions that decay based on the class of the item, as determined by inference about the class or via a label associated with the item.

Abstract: A new, interactive, television program profile interface and method are described. The interface is used to capture and display the likes and dislikes of a television viewer in multi-axis format. The weighting of the viewer's preferences proportionately changes over time. Those preferences are illustrated in bar graph format with respect to time or other axes. The viewer interacts with the graphical representations by time traversing the preferential chart, and providing necessary modifications and updates.

Abstract: An architecture for automatically optimizing audio and video modes available from interconnected multimedia devices. When one multimedia device is connected with another multimedia device, the devices communicate with each other to determine the modes available from both devices. The devices then compare the different combinations of available audio and video modes and determine which mode combination yields the optimal operating efficiency for outputting a media service.

A broadcasting device transmits the programs and CMs via separate channels. A receiving device receives the separate channels and records the CM information. The receiving device combines the recorded CM information with the programs for display in accordance with customer requirements set by the viewer. The customer requirements are also sent back to the commercial broadcasting company to adjust the CMs transmitted to the viewer and the fees charged for viewing the programs.

In accordance with a method, one or more search criteria (e.g., keywords) are received and a request for a search is then sent, along with the search criteria, to a head end of an information distribution system. In response, one or more search results are received from the head end. In this server-centric system, the program guide database is searched at the head end. The search results can be displayed on one search result IPG page (or more, if necessary) or displayed one at a time on the respective IPG page that includes the search result. Upon receiving an indication that a particular search result has been selected, one or more streams associated with the selected search result can be retrieved and decoded to recover the selected program, which can then be displayed.

The interactive media guidance application may monitor user interactions with the user equipment, and identify individual user profiles for different times of day. Using this information, the interactive media guidance application may partition the day into day parts, each associated with a user profile. The interactive media guidance application may also create or select a plurality of personalized interfaces or configurations for displaying media guidance information, where each interface or configuration reflects the interests of an identified user profile. When a user accesses the interactive media guidance application, the interactive media guidance application may identify the user profile associated with the current day part, and display the personalized interface or configuration associated with the identified user profile.

Abstract: The new zooming feature of the present invention applies to video service on mobile phones. The feature offers more interaction between the end user and the video server and it provides more interesting viewing. It has the potential to become a service differentiator for video services provided by wireless service providers. Because the bandwidth required for the streams does not change, the only complexity incurred is the control message processing and the only extra storage required is at the video server or the proxy.

Abstract: A method and apparatus providing for expanded search functionality in an electronic program guide (EPG) for television is described. The expanded search function finds show titles that are the same or similar to the show title of the program data currently displayed by the EPG. The expanded search function also finds shows similar to the one currently displayed by the EPG by using additional search elements based on the descriptive part of the EPG program data, such as actors, director, genre, etc., as well as search parameters based on the show time, channel, etc. Rather than only finding exact matches, the expanded search function uses fuzzy logic to find near matches and prioritizes the results according to the search elements and parameters as specified by the viewer.

Abstract: A service provider broadcast system and method are described. The method includes acquiring network service information regarding broadcast service content to be broadcast by a broadcast service system over a predetermined period. Using the network service information, a composite content list is created, including meta-data describing service provider content available from the service provider system and the broadcast service content. The composite content listed is broadcast to client systems, which in turn, provide ratings for the service provider and broadcast service content described by the composite content list. Using the received ratings, the service provider system selects a portion of the broadcast service content and generates a broadcast schedule for the selected content. The broadcast schedule is then broadcast to the client systems to enable the client systems to store one or more of the content data files from the selected portion of the broadcast service content.

Abstract: The apparatus and method of the present invention provides a direct-to-home integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) and a program for storing and displaying digital objects associated with an electronic television program guide using fuzzy logic. The method and apparatus maintains and adapts a user profile in order to efficiently select digital objects associated with an electronic program guide. The fuzzy logic based user profile may be used to select digital program guide objects for deletion from memory and/or to efficiently select digital program guide objects for display in an electronic program guide. Selection is based on fuzzy variables associated with the objects. In this manner, memory requirements and the number of programs displayed are reduced to decrease cost and reduce the amount of time a user must spend viewing the program guide.
