Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus for obtaining an indication of torque, axial alignment and axial location for a shaft rotating about an axis of rotation. A first set of detectable elements are operably connected to the shaft and positioned parallel to the axis of rotation. A second set of detectable elements parallel to the axis of rotation are interlaced in a sensing plane with said first set of detectable elements. The second set of detectable elements have a variable relative position with respect to the first set of detectable elements. A third set of detectable elements are positioned laterally to the first set of detectable elements and the second set of detectable elements in an alignment plane parallel to the sensing plane. The third set of detectable elements are positioned at an offset angle to the axis of rotation.

Abstract: A wave gear device torque detection method in which the gain of the output of each of a plurality of strain gauge sets affixed to the diaphragm of a flexible external gear is amplified and the outputs are then combined to form a detection signal. Adjusting the gain of each of the strain gauge outputs makes it possible to compensate for rotational ripple included in the output. Compensation of up to n order ripple components is possible by using at least (2n+1) strain gauges.

  • Patent number: 6651519
Abstract: A device for measuring torque in a drive assembly includes a torque-loaded torsion element (9), such as a shaft, and a reference element (21) surrounding the torsion element (9). The reference element is correspondingly tubular in shape. A first tube end (22) of the reference element (21) is firmly connected to a first shaft end (10) of the torsion element (9). A second tube end (24) of the reference element (21) is supported on the second shaft end (11) of the torsion element (9). The two tube ends (22, 24) are each associated with a transmitter element (16, 34). The relative position of the transmitter elements (16, 34) in the direction of rotation around the rotational axis (8) is recorded by a sensor element (35). The sensor (35) is associated with a housing (1). The sensor (35) generates a signal each time the two transmitter elements (16, 34) pass and transmits signals to an evaluation unit (36). The evaluation unit (36) determines the torque applied from the offset of the signals.

  • Patent number: 6578437
Abstract: A sensor arrangement for detecting a rotational angle and/or a torque of rotating mechanical components has a torsion bar provided between two angle encoders, and rotatable bodies which are coupled to the angle encoders so that from a difference in rotational angles of the rotatable bodies an absolute rotational angle position of the rotating component and a torque acting on the rotating component are derived.

  • Publication number: 20030094054
Abstract: A device for determining the steering angle of a steering wheel. The device includes a code carrier and a device for sensing a code which is provided on the code carrier, which code carrier and device are rotated with respect to one another when the steering angle changes, the device for sensing the code generating an output signal from which the steering angle can be determined. The code carrier is formed by means of one of two gear mechanism elements, which are arranged one behind the other on a common axle and have an operative connection to a drive element, which is driven by the steering wheel, and which are rotated with respect to one another when the steering angle changes.

  • Patent number: 6481296
Abstract: A rotation sensor (10) provided with a first rotor (11) fixed to a predetermined position in the axial direction of the shaft, a second rotor (12) fixed to the shaft (5) adjoining the first rotor, and a magnetic material core (13) having a resonance coil (13c) arranged around the first rotor and forming a magnetic circuit working with the first rotor. The first rotor (11) is formed by a magnetic material comprised of an insulator, an irregular magnetic field is formed with the magnetic material core, and the second rotor (12) is provided with a conductor cutting across areas of different intensities of the irregular magnetic field in accordance with the difference of the angle of rotation when a difference in the angle of relative rotation occurs at a shaft position where the first rotor is fixed and a shaft position where the second rotor is fixed.

  • Publication number: 20020104388
Abstract: An apparatus for sensing torque between mechanical members that are connected by a circular member, the circular member having a center hub, a first annular section disposed about the center hub and having a first element, and a second annular section disposed about the first annular section and having a second element. Relative rotation occurs between the first and second annular sections in proportion to torsional forces exerted between the mechanical members. As the circular member rotates, first and second sensors produce output signals as the elements pass the sensors, whereupon a detector circuit connected to the sensors detects the phase relationship between the first and second signals. That phase relationship indicates the torque applied between the mechanical members.

  • Patent number: 6363797
Abstract: A rotational angle detecting device includes a rotating member and a target which is provided on the rotating member. The target has a variable inclining portion to be detected is continuously changed as the rotating member rotates, and at least one detecting device, for detecting the portion close to the target. The detecting displacement angle of the rotating member from the detecting device is detected in a rotational direction based on the portion detected by the detecting device. Thus, it is possible to achieve a rotational angle detecting device, a torque detecting device using the rotational angle detecting device, and a steering apparatus capable of easily forming targets, stabilizing a peak value of a detection signal of the detecting means and readily calculating and correcting a rotational angle.
