  • Patent number: 8561486
Abstract: Devices, apparatus and methods are disclosed for non-contact pneumatic sampling and sampling of surfaces, persons, articles of clothing, buildings, furnishings, vehicles, baggage, packages, mail, and the like, for contaminating aerosols indicative of a hazard or a benefit, where the contaminating aerosols are chemical, radiological, biological, toxic, or infectious in character. In a first device, a central orifice for pulling a suction gas stream is surrounded by a peripheral array of convergingly-directed gas jets, forming a virtual sampling chamber. The gas jets are configured to deliver millisecond pneumatic pulses that erode particles from solid surfaces at a distance.

Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed for non-contact pneumatic sampling of surfaces, persons, articles of clothing, buildings, furnishings, vehicles, baggage, packages, mail, and the like, for aerosols or vapor residues indicative of a hazard or a benefit, where the residues are chemical, radiological, biological, toxic, or infectious in character. A central orifice for pulling a vacuum is surrounded by an array of convergingly-directed gas jets, forming a “virtual sampling chamber”. The gas jets are configured to deliver millisecond pneumatic pulses that erode particles and vapors from solid surfaces at a distance. A curtain wall flow encloses the sampling area during pulse retrieval.

  • Patent number: 7827873
Abstract: An apparatus automatically removes soil samples at intervals over a field of interest. The apparatus comprises a sampling assembly that rotates on a track. The probe of the sampler assembly is extended through the track and into the ground, then retracted on each revolution of the track. The sampler assembly is hinged and guided along a track in order to minimize soil compaction as the probe rotates around the rear wheel of the apparatus. Soil is ejected by means of a “rumble path” along the top of the track. The soil samples are pneumatically transferred to a bagging assembly located in the tractor pulling the apparatus.

  • Publication number: 20090193912
Abstract: Method for sampling individual rod-like articles of the tobacco-processing industry from an article massflow via a sampling unit. The article massflow includes a plurality of rod-like articles arranged longitudinally and axially parallel to each other and is conveyed along a conveying section at a predetermined conveyor speed. The method includes moving the sampling unit parallel to a conveyor direction of the article massflow, capturing at least one individual rod-like article from the article massflow with the sampling unit, and removing the captured at least one individual rod-like article from the article massflow in a direction at an angle to the conveyor direction of the article massflow.

  • Patent number: 7552654
Abstract: An apparatus removes soil samples at intervals over a field of interest. The apparatus comprises a sampling assembly (60) that rotates on a track (32) riding on a plurality of idler wheels (29, 31). A probe (66) extends and retracts under the action of a scissored frame assembly (70), mechanically manipulated by passage of the scissored frame assembly (70) along a guide assembly (108). The probe (66) is extended into the ground and retracted on each revolution. An ejector (68) pushes soil from the probe (66) as it passes over a hopper (88) to retain the cores. The cores are pneumatically transferred from the hopper (88) to a plurality of sample collection containers (126). An electronic control system uses GPS location information to deposit collected cores in the appropriate container (126) based upon the current location of the apparatus in the field of interest.

  • Patent number: 6576193
Abstract: Devices and methods for collecting a fluid specimen and testing it are disclosed that avoid unduly exposing the tester to the specimen and eliminate the possibility of contaminating the remaining portion of the collected fluid. The device includes a first compartment for collecting the fluid and provides controlled volumes of fluid from the first compartment to a second compartment where the fluid is accessible to test strips. Fluid from the first compartment is transferred to the second compartment by use of a fluid metering valve having a valve cylinder with one or more wells formed on the surface of the cylinder. The fluid metering valve is fluidly connected to the first compartment at a first valve position and is fluidly connected to the second compartment at a second valve position.

  • Patent number: 6520035
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for extracting cross-sectional samples of bulk material from a moving belt conveyor with a rotating sample cutter. The sample cutter is driven around a circular sampling path by a pair of double-acting pneumatic cylinders that are connected to angularly offset crank throws. Fluid flow in and out of each pneumatic cylinder pressure chamber is independently regulated as a function of the respective cylinder rod position and direction of movement whereby both chambers may be simultaneously open to the pressure supply or to the atmospheric vent for a brief rotational arc.

  • Patent number: 6460406
Abstract: The liquid to be measured flows through a flow-pipe and bathes the end (1) of a pivoting probe in a spectrophotometric cell (2). One measuring surface (15) of the probe (2) remains immersed in the liquid whose level is advantageously assured by an overflow barrier (19); but when the probe has pivoted, the measuring surface opens onto a duct (23) in which a rinsing liquid flows and leads into the flow-pipe and cleans it. This rinsing is quick and safe and requires no dismounting of the probe. The invention applies in particular to liquids containing radioactive products such as uranium and/or plutonium.
