Abstract: The invention relates to belt cylinders, i.e. piston rodless operating cylinders in which steel belts, in particular, are used in transferring force; even during production, belts of this kind have the negative property of not being sufficiently straight, instead they are bow shaped and this leads to break downs in that the belts either destroy the flanges on the deflecting rollers in a very short time or, if there are no flanges, they run off the rollers; for this reason despite the technical advantages, belt cylinders have not been successful in practice.A satisfactory operation of these belt cylinders may be achieved if, and only if, the belts which transfer force from the piston to the force pick-up are in absolute alignment.

  • Patent number: 4402677
Abstract: A device for tensioning the endless drive belt for vehicle accessories. An L-shaped housing is mounted in a fixed position adjacent the drive belt. A stub shaft is slidably mounted on the housing and has an idler pulley rotatably mounted on an extended end of the shaft. A pair of cam plates having mutually engageable camming surfaces are slidably mounted in the housing. One of the plates is operatively engaged with the stub shaft and imparts sliding movement to the shaft for moving the idler pulley into tensioning engagement with the drive belt. A compression spring biases the camming plates into sliding engagement with each other moving the pulley toward tensioning engagement with the drive belt. The included angles of the cam plate camming surfaces equal 90.degree.

  • Patent number: 4384707
Abstract: A mechanical clamping device, especially for clamping with high force of workpieces and tools, provided with clamping elements, characterized by an axial movable and helical rotatable conical wall (11,21), against which rest similar bodies of revolution (12,22), which are positioned on a changeable concentric circle of center between two converging, concentric surfaces of revolution (13,14,23,24), which are movable axially in respect of each other. Due to the extreme favorable behaviour of the rotating bodies of revolution (12,22) which displace themselves at rotation in a helical way between the surfaces of revolution (13,14,23,24), these surfaces are rolled and forced from each other. By this a favorable and equally distributed force transmission is obtained with a high degree of efficiency.

Abstract: A bell-crank lever having substantially stiff lever arms, which are approximately at right angles to each other, is connected to a stationary part by a film hinge that is secured adjacent to the junction of the lever arms and defines a bending axis which is at right angles to the plane of the bell-crank lever. An oscillating arm is secured to the free end of one of said lever arms and extends approximately parallel to the other of said lever arms and about film hinges which define bending axes that are at right angles to each other is bendable in the plane of the bell-crank lever and at right angles to that plane. An oscillating beam bar is connected to the other of said lever arms by a film hinge defining a bending axis at right angles to the plane of the bell-crank lever. The oscillating arm has in its free end portion a bearing bore for connection to a driving crank pin. The oscillating beam bar is substantially aligned with the axis of rotation of said crank pin.

  • Patent number: 4360325
Abstract: A gas piston driven hydraulic piston pump in which the gas cycle is of high efficiency by injecting the gas in slugs at the beginning of each power stroke. The hydraulic piston (40) is disposed to operate inside the gas piston (30), and the two pistons, both slidably but non-rotatably mounted, are coupled together with a rotating but non-sliding motion transfer ring (50) extending into antifriction grooves (46 and 37) in the sidewalls (42 and 32) of the two pistons. To make the hydraulic piston move at a constant speed during constant hydraulic horsepower demand and thus exert a constant pressure on the hydraulic fluid, these grooves are machined with variable pitches and one is the opposite of the other, i.e., the gas piston groove (37) increases in pitch during its power stroke while the hydraulic piston groove (46) decreases. Thus the motion transfer ring (50) is properly denominated a force multiplier ring. Any number of piston assembly sets may be used to obtain desired hydraulic horsepower.

Abstract: In a draw-bar mechanism for moving the collet of a chuck or the like on a spindle of an automatic turning machine toward its axial clamping position and for thereafter closing the collet more slowly with greater force about a tool or workpiece to be clamped, motion is transmitted from an actuating sleeve to a draw bar or like control member by spherical thrust members movably confined between three faces obliquely inclined relative to each other. A first face is fixed relative to the spindle assembly and has one section parallel to the axis and another axially contiguous section obliquely inclined relative to the axis, the two sections merging in an exposed edge. A second face is fixed relative to the control member, and the third face is fixed relative to the actuating sleeve and has two axially consecutive sections obliquely inclined relative to each other.

  • Patent number: RE31049
Abstract: Apparatus having fuel combustion cylinders for urging the rods of pistons operating therein through power strokes, and fluid pressure pistons, also operating in cooperating cylinders, which are correspondingly urged during said power strokes through movement causing the production of a pressure fluid which is thereafter utilized, on demand, to do work. In the transmission of said movement-producing forces of said fuel-powered apparatus input to said pressure fluid output, a linkage mechanism is advantageously utilized to provide a pressure pattern in the pressure fluid which starts at an optimum low value and progressively builds up. This effectively reverses the pressure pattern of the combustion fuel which consists of a rapid-expansion gas having an initial maximum value and, due to expansion, progressively diminishes in value.
