  • Patent number: 8561492
Abstract: A multi-stage transmission has driving gears m and driven gears n in constant mesh and supported for being individually engageable and disengageable with a hollow driven gear shaft. The transmission realizes a smooth speed change by providing cam rods within the driven gear shaft for engagement and disengagement between the driven gears n and the driven gear shaft and by providing compact lost motion mechanisms with axially acting springs for the cam rods, respectively. Swing pawl members each disengageably engage projections formed at circumferentially spaced positions on the inner peripheral surface of each driven gear n to control engagement and disengagement between each driven gear n and the driven gear shaft. The cam rods are moved in the driven gear shaft to operate the swing pawl members. Gear shift driving means includes a control rod moved in sliding contact with the inner surfaces of the cam rods.

  • Patent number: 8549941
Abstract: Driven gears are supported on a hollow driven gear shaft in a manner engageable with and disengageable from a hollow driven gear shaft via swing pawl members. The transmission has first a engaging member for engaging the gear shaft with a first driven gear, so as to effect synchronous rotation thereof and a second engaging member for engaging the gear shaft with a second gear, one step lower in the reduction gear ratio than the first gear, so as to effect synchronous rotation thereof. When making an upshift by changing over the engaging member from the engagement with the first gear to the engagement with the second gear, the gear shift is made by engaging the second gear with the gear shaft through the second engaging member while the first gear is being in engagement with the gear shaft through the first engaging member.

  • Patent number: 4279178
Abstract: A power transfer case for a four wheel drive land cruiser is altered to provide overdrive capability. A main drive gear is journaled for rotation about a main drive shaft driven by the vehicle transmission system. The main drive gear includes an axially extending hub section. A direct drive gear is splined onto the main drive shaft, as is an overdrive driving gear. An overdrive idler gear provides a mechanical speed advantage and is engaged with an overdrive driven gear that is journaled for rotation about the main shaft. A shift collar is splined in continuous engagement with the hub section of the main drive gear, and is longitudinally shifted to alternatively effectuate splined engagement with either a direct drive gear or with an overdrive driven gear. The vehicle is provided with four wheel overdrive drive capability without axial relocation of any of the major structural drive line supports or assemblies.

  • Patent number: 4038882
Abstract: An axially short, variable-ratio gear transmission suitable particularly for motorcycles has a first or input shaft, a second or output shaft, and a countershaft. First and second rotatable gears on the input shaft permanently mesh with respective first and second rotatable gears on the output and counter shafts. The first and second gears on the countershaft are permanently connected for joint rotation, a first coupling permits one of the two gears on the first shaft to be coupled to the first shaft, and a second coupling similarly may couple one of the gears on the second shaft to the latter.

  • Patent number: 4019400
Abstract: A transmission is provided having a housing, a power input shaft rotatably mounted at one end, a power output shaft rotatably mounted at the other end coaxially with the power input shaft, a splined clutch member affixed to the end of one of the shafts having a gear engaged over a portion thereof, a second splined clutch member freely rotatably mounted on the other shaft and having a gear engageably mounted over a portion thereof, the end of each clutch-engaging member extending beyond each gear, a splined countershaft rotatably supported in the housing and having a gear engaged at each end engaging the gears mounted on the power input and output shafts, a third splined clutch member affixed to one of the shafts and positioned intermediate the first and second splined clutch members and of the same diameter as said clutch members, a clutch sliding ring or coupling member mounted over the cylindrical clutch member having a splined bore engaging the third clutch member and axially slidable with respect thereto

  • Patent number: 3968704
Abstract: A power transfer mechanism incorporated in a multiple path drive system includes a transfer case disposed between a source of input torque and at least one drive axle. The transfer case has a pair of parallel drive trains including a gear drive train and a chain drive train, and means for selectively engaging one of the drive trains as desired to provide power transfer. A sprocket in the chain drive train serves as one of the gears in the gear drive train.

  • Patent number: RE32125
Abstract: A change-speed transmission with a shift mechanism which selectively couples a plurality of change gears one at a time to a shaft on which the gears are journalled. The shift mechanism is disposed entirely within the transmission housing and includes a shift key arranged for axial sliding movement in a groove in the shaft. A pair of axially spaced projections at one end of the key project outwardly of the groove to embrace a collar which is journalled on the shaft. The collar is axially shifted on the shaft by a rotary shift fork which engages a circular groove in the collar to selectively position the key axially of the shaft in its several gear-engaging positions. A third radial projection at the other end of the key engages a different gear in each of the several positions thereby drivingly coupling the selected gear to the shaft to provide various forward drive speeds.
