Abstract: A planet gear includes a toothed portion having a bore extending axially therethrough, a hub disposed within the bore such that an annular space is defined between the hub and the toothed portion, and an elastomeric element injection-molded into the annular space. The toothed portion includes a first groove circumferentially disposed in an inner surface of the toothed portion, and the hub includes a second groove circumferentially disposed in a peripheral surface of the hub. The grooves provide surfaces upon which the injection-molded elastomer can set. Holes may be disposed axially within the elastomeric element to decrease the spring rate of the elastomer, thereby providing additional radial compliancy to the planet gear. A method for manufacturing the gear includes disposing the hub within the bore of the toothed portion, injecting the elastomer in the annulus defined by the hub disposed within the bore, and curing the injected elastomer.

  • Patent number: 6349607
Abstract: A transfer ring (10) for a continously variable transmission. The transfer ring (10) includes an inner ring (12), an outer ring (18) and a spacer ring (24). The inner, outer and spacer rings are substantially coaxial with a transfer ring (10) axis. The spacer ring (24) is disposed radially between the inner and outer rings. The inner and outer rings are secured to the spacer ring (24) to substantially prevent relative movement therebetween. The spacer ring (24) has non-overlapping radially inwardly (26) and radially outwardly (27) facing slots extending respectively into inner and outer circumferences thereof. Laminar segments (42) are mounted in each of the slots and are slidably displaceable in a direction parallel to the transfer ring axis (22). The segments (42) are generally radially aligned with the transfer ring axis (22) and have upper (44) and lower (45) tabs straddling the spacer ring (24) to limit the distance which the segments (42) may be slidably displaced.

Abstract: A gear made of a resin includes a substantially cylindrical rim having a plurality of teeth formed around an outer periphery thereof, a boss formed about a rotational center of the rim, and a web connecting the boss and the rim to each other. At least one groove is defined along outer surface of each tooth to divide the tooth in a widthwise direction of the tooth. As a result, a portion of the gear, in which the grooves are defined, is deformed in a reduced amount, leading to a reduced amount of deformation such as a warpage or sink in the entire gear, thereby providing an enhancement in tooth flank accuracy. Since the grooves are defined along the outer surfaces of the teeth, a lubricant such as grease can be supplied effectively to tooth flanks by previously applying the lubricant in the grooves.

  • Patent number: 4619150
Abstract: A sliding gear for a speed-changing transmission, idling on an output shaft, has a set of external running teeth in permanent mesh with a driving gear and a set of internal clutch teeth engageable with mating teeth on a coupling member carried by that shaft. The two sets of teeth have centerlines inclined to the axial direction by angles so related as to exert balanced axial forces upon the sliding gear in the engaged position of the latter. The clutch teeth have flanks diverging from their centerlines at small angles, in the direction of the engagement shift, to hold the sliding gear in contact with the coupling member.

  • Patent number: 4589300
Abstract: The invention discloses means to reduce the noise and vibration that result from gear transmission error produced by variations in the mesh stiffness at different phases of tooth engagement. A substantially constant mesh stiffness is achieved by proportioning the teeth and the field of contact so that the product of incremental tooth length and tooth load per unit length at a given torque load integrated over the field of contact does not vary significantly as the tooth contact lines move across the field. To minimize deviations from the mean mesh stiffness, the teeth are made as flexible as possible and the total contact ratio as large as possible.

  • Patent number: 4552030
Abstract: A self-aligning gear train of enhanced load transmitting capacity comprises a pair of cylindrical gear wheels having intermeshing teeth with concavo-convex side surfaces. The opposed, peripheral surfaces of the intermeshing cylindrical gear wheels are square providing increased surface contact between meshing gear teeth from the base to the edges of the teeth with the convex tooth surface of one gear engaging a concave tooth surface of the other gear to provide self alignment of one cylindrical wheel with the other.

  • Patent number: 4487088
Abstract: A sprocket construction for a zero caternary chain. In a zero caternary chain, a tensioning system is utilized to prevent caternary or slack in the chain and as a result of the high degree of tensioning, the bushings of the chain ride against the roots of the sprocket teeth. To prevent erosion of the sprocket teeth and bushings, the root diameter is modified to provide an enlarged operating pitch diameter for a predetermined increase in pitch length of the link. The pitch line clearance is enlarged so that it is equal to 2% to 25% of the working pitch diameter and produces a pressure angle of 20.degree. to 40.degree..

  • Patent number: 4458547
Abstract: An improved non-metallic sprocket, such as the phenolic laminate type, one improvement consisting of sprocket teeth molded from continuous layers of material laminated in a corrugated, sprocket tooth forming construction about the periphery of the sprocket. Another improvement consists of the inclusion of a non-metallic hub fashioned from a length of resin pre-impregnated material, in particular, fiberglass cloth, wound into a tube. During the molding of the sprocket the layers of material forming the tube are laminated into a solid hub.

  • Patent number: 4436473
Abstract: An improved drive mechanism for rotating a sweep arm in a storage structure that contains a free-flowing stored material. The inner end of the sweep arm is mounted on a turntable that is disposed in the inner end of a radially extending trough in the foundation of the storage structure. The turntable is provided with a pair of spaced, concentric, downwardly extending flanges, and a plurality of ribs connect the upper portions of the spaced flanges. The spaces between the ribs define upwardly diverging passages. A drive pin is positioned beneath each rib and extends between the spaced flanges. The teeth of a drive sprocket are engageable with the drive pins, and rotation of the sprocket acts to rotate the turntable and thus rotate the sweep arm around the structure to dislodge the stored material. As the drive sprocket is rotated, any stored material in the vicinity of the drive pins is extruded upwardly through the passages by the sprocket teeth to prevent possible jamming of the drive mechanism.
