Abstract: A hand brake device for a wheelchair comprising a hand brake device on either handlebar and an associated brake provided on wheel. The hand brake device comprises a body member, a brake lever, and an actuator. Brake lever is coupled to brake cable. Body member comprises an open space with two extended opposite curve members of brake lever received therein, and a recess pivoted about a bolt. Operator may grip lever member to pivot brake lever so as to move toward or away from handlebar, thus tautening the brake cable for braking. A stopper member is inserted into channel of opening on the side of body member. When the brake lever is pulled toward or pushed away from the handle, the brake cable is tautened for braking the vehicle such that the stopper member clears from the channel. Further, pulls or pushes the actuator to cause the end of the stopper member to be clung between the dents, thereby locking the vehicle.

It is positioned on the backside of the handlebar and is operated by the thumb. The device has a stop built in that prevents the rider from engaging the throttle at more than half speed using the bar. The rider can increase speed, but only by using the main throttle. This has three beneficial effects. First, it provides a convenient and easy method for riders to operate the throttle without fatigue. Second, it is operated by the thumb, just like the main throttle, thereby preventing confusion in an emergency. Third, it limits the speed the vehicle can operate, no matter how hard the device is gripped. Thus, in a panic situation, gripping the handlebar does not cause any sudden burst of speed.

  • Patent number: 6134984
Abstract: A throttle lever device for a small-sized vehicle includes an operating lever which is rotated manually about a pivot shaft to pull or return a cable connected to a throttle valve in a fuel supply unit such as a carburetor. The throttle lever device includes a first link adapted to rotate about the pivot shaft of the operating lever in accordance with the pivotal motion of the operating lever, and a second link supported rotatably through a shaft on a front end side of the first link. One end portion of the second link is engaged with the cable. The first link has a restricting portion for restricting the rotation of the second link. A stopper member disposed in the rotating direction of the second link is adapted to abut the second link. The amount of cable pulled changes relative to the amount of operation of the operating lever which controls the throttle valve.

  • Patent number: 6112614
Abstract: A brake lever arm is mounted to a base member, with the base member fixed to a bicycle handlebar. The lever arm is pivotal about a pivot point on the base. The lever arm includes an adjusting mechanism that adjusts the position of the lever arm when the lever arm is in a brake dis-engaged position. The adjusting mechanism is slideable in grooves in the lever arm such that the adjusting mechanisms may be moved to positions that are differing distances away from the pivot point. The adjusting mechanism includes a contact member that engages a brake cable connected to the lever arm when the lever arm is moved from the brake dis-engaged position toward a brake engagement position. The position of the contact member with respect to the pivot point determines the effect movement of the lever arm has on the cable. In this manner, the adjusting mechanism adjusts the length of the stoke or travel of the lever arm from the brake disengaged position to the brake engagement position.

A brake member such as a brake lever is movably attached to the brake member bracket, and the switch mounting recess is structured for mounting an electrical switch therein. Since the switch is mounted within a recess in the brake member bracket, the switch does not project excessively from the brake member bracket. Abstract: A collapsible control lever for use with a control system having levers including a conventional cable control lever system such as those found on motorcycles and bicycles. The lever has three independent axes of rotation about which sections of the lever rotate during impact to deflect the impact force. However, the lever remains rigid in the direction of the applied control force when in its operational position during normal operation. The lever restores itself to its operational position following impact with minimal user assistance. The lever may be sized and shaped to be easily retrofit into existing known pivot bases, and at least one of the pivots may include an improved swivel pivot that is sealed from mud and other debris in its operational configuration. The improved swivel pivot has a first and second generally cylindrical frame portion that rotate about a pivot pin with each frame portion having a sliding surface with a smoothly alternating concave and convex-shaped sliding surface.
