Flexible Control Element Patents (Class 74/489)
  • Patent number: 5802923
Abstract: A shifting apparatus for a bicycle includes a takeup element for winding and unwinding a control cable, a first shift member supported to be rotatable substantially along an outer periphery of a handlebar for rotating the takeup element, a second shift member supported by the handlebar for rotating the takeup element backward, and a positioning mechanism for retaining the takeup element in a selected angular position. An interlock mechanism is provided for interlocking the first shift member and takeup element, such that the takeup element is not always rotatable with the first shift member. This interlock mechanism allows the first shift member to remain still when the takeup element is rotated backward in an unwinding direction. Further, the shifting apparatus is constructed at low cost, with the first shift member having an axis of rotation extending at an angle to a handlebar axis.

Abstract: A twist-grip shifter for bicycles having a twist grip or grip part which is actuated by the rider's hand to change the gears of the bicycle, and a cable winding mechanism or coil wind-up mechanism. The twist grip and the cable winding mechanism of the twist-grip shifter are connected to one another, and debris and other contaminants can be prevented from entering the interior of the twist-grip shifter near this connection by providing a contactless seal or a friction seal. The contactless seal includes a projecting collar on the cable winding mechanism which extends into a groove formed in the twist grip. The collar of the cable winding mechanism essentially does not contact the groove of the twist grip. The friction seal includes a lip or flange formed from the rubber material of the twist grip, which lip then contacts a portion of the collar of the cable winding mechanism.

Abstract: A manual braking mechanism is adapted for manually overridable remote conl. The mechanism is disposed in a generally planar region forward of a vehicle's handle bar that does not interfere with the vehicle body or a human vehicle driver. The mechanism includes a base plate releasably clamped to the vehicle's handle bar and a housing fixed on the base plate. A brake cylinder in the housing connects to a control lever swingable on the base plate about a lever axis, and the cylinder's reaction force biases the lever toward a brake releasing position. A link pivots on the plate at the lever axis, has a hinge connection remote from the lever axis and has a carrier closer to the lever axis to the hinge connection. The carrier cammingly rotates the lever as the link swings on the lever axis. The mechanism has a frame whose first leg connects to the base plate at the lever axis and the frame's second leg is releasably clamped to the handle bar.

Abstract: A speed indicator for bicycles for indicating the shifting action of the bicycle and a speed sign at each state of shift includes a driving wheel driven by a takeup reel of a shifting device, a resilient strip driven by the driving wheel, and a track along which the resilient strip may displace. When the resilient strip displaces along the track, a shift sign pre-formed on the resilient strip may be shown through an indicating element provided on the track. The resilient strip may be adapted for use in vertically or horizontally oriented tracks of any construction, and their assembly is easy. The driving wheel further includes a compensation mechanism for ensuring clear indication of the indicated sign on the resilient strip.

Abstract: A rotary actuator for a bicycle handbrake is characterized by a housing connected with a bicycle handlebar and an actuator rotatably connected with the housing. The actuator has a handle which extends radially from the axis of rotation of the actuator. A brake cable is connected with the actuator so that when the actuator is rotated in one direction, the cable is pulled to squeeze the brake calipers against the rim of a bicycle wheel, and when the actuator is rotated in the other direction, the cable is pushed to release the brake calipers. A releasable locking mechanism between the actuator and the housing is operable to lock the actuator in a brake release position and to release the actuator for rotation to apply the brake.

Abstract: A shift control device includes a movable member having a cable support for supporting the transmission cable, wherein the movable member moves as the shifting device actuates the transmission. An assist spring is provided for biasing the movable member in a direction opposite a direction of biasing of the movable member by the return spring of the transmission. The cable support supports the transmission cable such that tension exerted by the assist spring on the transmission cable remains substantially constant regardless of a position of the movable member as the shifting device actuates the transmission. In a more specific embodiment, the cable support moves the transmission cable in a straight line, and the cable support may move the transmission cable without winding the transmission cable about the cable support.
