  • Patent number: 5966984
Abstract: A starting assembly for an automotive vehicle is connected to the clutch pedal thereof. The pivoting of the clutch pedal (in a clockwise direction in FIG. 1) pulls a clutch connector. The clutch connector pivots a clutch lever (in a counterclockwise direction in FIG. 1) which, in turn, actuates a translator. The translator transforms and translates the pivoting movement of the clutch lever into a linear movement of a starter pinion gear to engage the starter ring gear. The hyper-pivoting of the clutch pedal forces the closure of a contact switch which provides power for an electric motor (not shown) to rotate the starter pinion gear and, therefore, start the internal combustion engine of the automotive vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5742137
Abstract: In a starter control system for an engine equipped with a starter motor, starter relay, ignition switch, and electronic control unit (ECU), a circuit and method whereby the ECU will deactivate the starter relay if the operator of a vehicle attempts to re-start the vehicle when the current engine speed is greater than the minimum engine running speed, under both initial starting and engine running conditions. The deactivation of the starter relay will prevent engagement of the pinion gear to the ring gear of the starter motor, potentially reducing wear on the starter motor, grinding of the pinion gear to the ring gear when engaging the gears at a high RPM, and noise to an operator of the vehicle.

Abstract: A friction applying engine starter which includes a chassis having a first end, a second end, a top edge and a bottom edge. A gasoline fuelled two cycle engine mounted on the chassis. The engine has an output shaft. A fuel tank is mounted on the chassis and is coupled with the engine to supply fuel. A friction roller is rotatably mounted at a first end of the chassis. A gear assembly is provided including a plurality of gears that are rotatably mounted on the chassis. The gear assembly is coupled to the output shaft of the engine and the friction roller. The gear assembly creates a gear reduction such that a plurality of revolutions of the output shaft of the engine are required for every revolution of the friction roller. Handles are secured to the chassis wjereby the chassis is manipulated to position the friction roller in a working position.

  • Patent number: 5617758
Abstract: In a permanent magnet starter, a pinion clutch is smoothly engaged with a rotating shaft of an electric motor through a helical spline. A rotation restraint member is arranged at an outer periphery portion and this rotation restraint member is forcibly arranged by a magnetic field coil which is controlled from an outside portion. In a permanent magnet type motor having no magnetic field coil for exciting the motor, it is unnecessary to alter a motor unit. By the rotation force of an armature a pinion gear of the pinion clutch is moved, accordingly the permanent magnet starter for reducing the collision force during the meshing time of the pinion gear to a ring gear can be obtained. Further the permanent magnet starter having a superior gear meshing withstanding property and further without the lowering in the sealing property in the motor unit can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 5513540
Abstract: An engine starter gearing for starting an engine having a starter gear includes a power shaft and a housing affixed on the power shaft. The housing retains an axially displaceable driven clutch member. An internal groove is provided within an open end of the housing. The driven clutch member has an enlarged external diameter portion that fits within the housing. The driven clutch member is held in position by a compressed spring retained within the housing. An installation groove is formed in the driven clutch member spaced away from the enlarged diameter portion. A lock ring is positioned within the housing by first inserting it in the installation groove. The driven clutch member is axially depressed inwardly within the housing, compressing the spring until the locking ring snaps in position in the housing internal groove.

  • Patent number: 5435125
Abstract: A redundant engine starting system is disclosed that includes at least first and second sub-starters that rotate corresponding sub-starter output shafts affixed by a joining gear to rotate an engine starter shaft to start the engine. Each sub-starter includes a speed sensor for detecting rotational speed of the sub-starter, and a control valve to control rotational speed of the sub-starter. A system control intelligence interprets sensed rotational speeds of the sub-starters and commands the control valves, so that the control valve of an operative sub-starter is commanded to allow increased rotational speed of the sub-starter and therefore its corresponding output shaft whenever the system control intelligence interprets the sensed rotational speed of an inoperative sub-starter.

  • Patent number: 5307701
Abstract: A system for starting model engines. The model engine starting system, in the preferred form, utilizes a motor to drive a torque converting unit. The output of the torque converting unit is mechanically coupled to the crankshaft of an engine through an overrunning clutch so that rotation and torque from the torque converting unit is transmitted to the crankshaft. There is, however, no transmission of rotation or torque in the reverse direction when the engine is running. For glow ignition model engines, a system is described which assists the starting system by controlling the temperature of the glow plug, thus maintaining proper ignition of fuel during starting and running the engine. In order to control the temperature of the glow plug, a control system is utilized to vary the electrical power delivered to the glow plug according to the glow plug's temperature.
