  • Patent number: 7086267
Abstract: A metal-forming die according to the present invention includes die blades with convoluted opposed side surfaces that correspond to variable-width features on the working surface of the die. The convoluted side surfaces and variable-width working surface features permit the impression left by one die blade to fill space taken from an impression made by a laterally adjacent die blade. Such a die permits formation of working surface shapes not possible with flat-sided die components. The die is manufactured in discrete longitudinally extending components, or blades. Dividing the working surface of the die into longitudinally extending portions, each carried by a die blade allows conventional machining processes to be employed in forming the working surface on each die blade. An additional machining process cuts complementary shapes on the sides of the die blades. The die blades and their corresponding working surfaces interfit, or nest together.

Abstract: A steel rule cutting die is provided and includes a baseboard, and cutting knifes including an integral cross member having holes having a first diameter. The cutting knifes may be bent to form an enclosed cavity. Fasteners including a head and a shaft having second and third diameters, respectively, are provided, and are disposable within the hole in the cross member for connecting the cutting knife to the baseboard. Washers including a fourth outer diameter and a hole having a fifth diameter, are provided. The first diameter may be greater than the third diameter, the second diameter may be greater than the fifth diameter, and the fourth diameter may be greater than the first diameter, such that, when the washer is disposed under the fastener head, the washer prevents the head from entering the hole in the cross member, and facilitates translation of cavities parallel to the baseboard.

  • Patent number: 6760959
Abstract: A die and a method for forming a die to produce optically varying effects in a light reflective surface. A design generally formed as a plurality of parallel grooves of varying widths and depths are engraved in a soft metal foil adhered to a substrate. A hard metal coating is formed on the engraved soft metal foil in a metal plating bath. The hard metal coating, removed from the soft metal foil provides a die formed as a mirror image of the grooves engraved in the soft metal foil. The die is used to deform a reflective surface such that the surface produces optically varying effects. A die formed in the same manner with further processing is used to both deform a reflective surface and hot stamp it to a substrate.

  • Patent number: 6755748
Abstract: The screw has two or three non-circular super-imposed recesses. The depth of each recess is less than 1.2 mm and there is a less than 1° of draw in each recess. The screw head recess is formed using a punch (10) in a cold-heading process. The punch is formed in a profilating CNC machine, cutting the profiles (12,14,16) of the punch to a tolerance of better than ±0.025 mm. A method of manufacture of a cold-forming punch for such a screw comprises providing a profilating head as one of the tools on a turret mounted adjacent the chuck in the CNC machine. The profilating head has several cutting elements, each being adjustable with respect to one another: axially, radially and angularly.

  • Patent number: 6735844
Abstract: In order to produce precision optic elements using injection molded plastic, a metal mold is fabricated from two positive masters comprising exact metallic reproductions of the desired plastic part and on which a metal shell has been electroformed or otherwise plated. Two positive masters are required for each mold, one being formed to define the upper part of the mold and the other the lower part of the mold. Each positive master is scribed with an axial line and with a cutting line slightly offset from the axial line, the cutting line for the upper part of the mold being below the axial line and the cutting line for the lower part of the mold being above the axial cutting line. The positive masters are then cut along their cutting lines, the metal shells removed, and the portion of the remaining metal shells between their axial lines and their cutting lines is then trimmed. The upper and lower parts of the mold are then combined to define the complete injection mold.
