Patent number: 6557388Abstract: A method of determining at least one dimension of an extrusion die includes determining a plurality of reference points on a contour of an opening of the extrusion die. Sizes of a plurality of figures with same shapes corresponding to the plurality of reference points are determined. Each of the plurality of figures is inscribed in the contour of the opening and has at least one axis of symmetry. Each of the plurality of figures contacts each of the plurality of reference points and at least one another point on the contour. The at least one dimension of the extrusion die is determined based on the sizes of the plurality of figures.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2000Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: The Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akira Mitsumaru, Kazumi Kato, Kazuhiro Itabashi, Toshiyuki Kakinoki

Patent number: 6520049Abstract: A method of copying a three-dimensional surface having X, Y, and Z dimensions forms a translucent impression of the surface to be copied and then captures a two-dimensional image of the translucent impression. The captured image has X and Y dimensions and a grayscale value for each X, Y coordinate of the image. Then, the method converts each grayscale value of the image to a Z height value, thereby generating a digital file of X, Y, and Z values. The digital file may then be provided as an input to a numerically controlled machine, which can be operated to reproduce the surface to be copied. The method of the present invention finds particular application in digitizing handcrafted emboss dies and the like.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2001Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Hallmark Cards IncorporatedInventors: Scott M. Patent number: 6212934Abstract: An improved recoverable and reusable die used for cold forging utilizing a medium of penetration made of an alloy with a low melting point. The alloy is a mixture of the elements Bi, Pb, and Sn. The alloy is poured into the basic die structure, and is solidified at a normal temperature to be a medium of solidifying for the basic die structure. Since the alloy with a low melting point is molten at a low temperature, all the members in the basic die structure are recoverable for reusing. Thus the shapes of the die cavities of the workpieces to be forged can be repeatedly changed and the cost of production of cold forging dies is lowered.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1999Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Inventor: Shao-Chien Tseng

Patent number: RE37366Abstract: A method of making a pair of rotary die cylinders with lands having coacting cutting edges which cut blanks from a web of material passing through the nip of the rotating dies. In cross section each land has an outer face and a pair of spaced apart side faces which are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the chord of the outer face to provide a clean cut and facilitate release of the cut blank from the cutting blades as it emerges from the nip of the dies. The die cylinders are journalled for rotation by recesses with frusto conical locating surfaces in their opposed ends. Each die cylinder is made by machining the recesses in the opposed ends of a generally cylindrical workpiece of tool steel and then utilizing the recesses to locate and orient the workpiece relative to a cutting tool to produce a cylindrical surface on the workpiece concentric with the axis of the recesses and then to machine away portions of the periphery of the cylindrical surface to form the cutting blade lands thereon.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1998Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Bernal International, Inc.Inventors: William Allen Cox, Alan Rae Pfaff
