Patent number: 5759092Abstract: An apparatus for sharpening the teeth of a circular saw comprises a rocking arm with a pawl to engage and actuate the teeth of an indexing ratchet wheel which is mounted coaxially with the circular saw for synchronous clockwise indexing, and a grinding wheel capable of intermittently moving forward to contact and grind the saw teeth. A cam mechanism controls the rocking arm so that the land of each saw tooth first contacts the grinding wheel when the grinding wheel moves forward, prior to the contacting of the root and the cutting edge thereof with the grinding wheel when the grinding wheel is about to reach its frontmost position. The saw tooth starts to stop temporarily for a short time when the grinding wheel is about to contact the root and the cutting edge. The problems of damages caused by impacts and/or excessive contact pressure are therefore alleviated.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1997Date of Patent: June 2, 1998Inventor: Wayne Liu

Patent number: 4938104Abstract: To gain access to the cutting edge of a saw tooth in the direction of both the back and the front face of a tooth in a single grinding process, the grinding tools (27,37) are adjustable in relation to both their respective pivoted arms (2,3) and with them relative to the machine frame (11,12). Only the primary pivoted arm (2) is driven up and down by a drive (43), pivoting the secondary arm (3) with it by a drive joint (6). Because the pivot axes of pivoted arms (2,3) are not parallel, a universal coupling (6) must be used. This drive joint (6) is offset relative to the pivot axles (32) upwardly from the saw-blade guide (13) in the plane (14) of the saw-blade. Thereby with an otherwise identical device wide or larger-diameter saw blades can be ground.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1989Date of Patent: July 3, 1990Assignee: Iseli & Co. AGInventor: Benno Iseli

Patent number: 4823649Abstract: An automatic dual sidegrinder for a circular saw includes precision adjustments for the tangential grinding angle, the radial grinding angle, and provides a high speed automatic regrinding operation. The tangential angle adjustment is made by a torsion bar that presses against a rotatable index finger stop. The torsion bar is moved by a screw bearing against it mounted in a fixture attached to the frame. The radial angle adjustment is made by turning cams mounted on bolts bored into a frame which are situated in slots cut into movable plates which support rotary grinding spindles. The cams rotate the plates, changing slightly the radial angle of attack of the grinding wheels. The speed of the saw is doubled by indexing the saw on the completion of both a forward and rearward longitudinal stroke of the grinding wheels. The drive motor for the longitudinal motion of the wheels has an output cam shaft with oppositely opposed flats.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 1988Date of Patent: April 25, 1989Inventor: James Emter

Patent number: 4643050Abstract: A machine for grinding the depth gauges of saw chain cutter links includes a saw chain carrier mounted for movement toward and away from a power grinding element. As the carrier moves a cutter link toward the grinding element, the cutter tooth of such link moves beneath indexing structure which includes a shield plate which then moves with the carrier toward the grinding element. Upon continued movement, the shield plate contacts an indexing roller which forces the plate down against the top of the tooth. After the plate bottoms against the tooth, the plate forces the indexing roller upwardly. The roller, being linked to the grinding element, lifts the grinding element to its grinding position for grinding the depth gauge of such link. An alternative embodiment includes a brake activated by the carrier to hold the grinding element in its grinding position after the cutter tooth passes beneath the indexing roller.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1985Date of Patent: February 17, 1987Inventor: E. Patent number: 4594920Abstract: A grinding machine for grinding the cutters of cutter links. A cam-acting chain positioner is operable to force a cutter link downwardly against a support for the link. To grind a cutter, the chain positioner is actuated to move the cutter and the support for the cutter in a direction causing the edge of a grinding wheel to come against the cutting edge of the cutter. The mechanism is such that the grinding wheel protrudes farther into the gullet of the cutter link with greater movement of the support in a direction producing grinding of the cutter.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1984Date of Patent: June 17, 1986Inventor: Lynn J. Patent number: 4287793Abstract: A saw chain grinding machine has a disc-shaped grinding wheel mounted for rotation in a fixed position on the base of a grinding machine. A saw chain holder is mounted at one end of a support arm extending across and beneath the wheel, with the opposite end of the support arm being mounted on the base for swinging movement about a pivot axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the grinding wheel. Swinging movement of the support arm causes a corresponding swinging movement of the saw chain holder along the periphery of the wheel. A stop fixed to the machine base limits swinging movement of the support arm in one direction to determine a grinding position for the saw chain holder along the periphery of the wheel. The support arm is adjustable lengthwise for moving the holder and thus a saw chain cutter element toward and away from the wheel in a line extending generally toward the axis of rotation of the wheel when the arm is in grinding position against its stop.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1975Date of Patent: September 8, 1981Inventor: E. Patent number: 4040313Abstract: A grinding machine for sharpening circular saw blade teeth. The machine includes an arbor for supporting a circular saw blade at a pre-selected position relative to a grinding disc. The grinding disc is mounted to a parallelogram linkage that has a tracing pin fixed thereto. Movement of the tracing pin over the surface of a sawtooth-shaped template causes corresponding movement of the grinding disc against a selected sawtooth. Also included is a tooth indexing mechanism whereby precise spacing of the circular saw teeth is obtained. This is accomplished by a tooth spacing pattern mounted to the arbor and by an indexing pawl that facilitates rotation of the arbor in precise increments equal to desired spacing for the teeth of the blade being operated on. The arbor is pivotably mounted relative to the grinding disc to enable bevel grinding of the tooth surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1975Date of Patent: August 9, 1977Inventor: William John Lustgraaf
