  • Patent number: 6374703
Abstract: A computer-controlled band saw sharpener employing electrically powered, X and Y axis drivers, each having a reciprocating element. The X-axis driver actuates a feed finger mechanism, to index the saw in repetitive, stepped fashion, while each tooth is successively ground. In concert with the X-axis driver, the Y axis driver repetitively lowers and raises a grinding head, provided with a rotary grinding wheel. Both the X and Y axis drivers include servomotors to rotate the shaft of an elongated ball screw. A carrier box houses a non-rotatable ball screw nut. The nut travels back and forth along the ball screw shaft in accordance with its direction and extent of rotation. Drive arms for the feed finger mechanism and the grinding head mechanism are bolted at their lower ends to a threaded bushing in the nut carrier box. The computerized controller is programmable, to produce virtually any desired tooth shape in the saw.

The grinding attachment has two spindles or shafts, which operate independently of one another, and are preferably oriented perpendicular to one another, and preferably support separate drives. The grinding attachment is mounted to pivot and be adjusted in three spatial directions. • Patent number: 5000061
Abstract: A base is arranged to be secured in a fixed position adjacent a grinding wheel of the type having a pair of grinding surfaces extending in different planes. A slide arm is mounted in the base and carries a single grinding wheel dressing tool with two positions. One such position is for grinding one of the wheel surfaces and the other position is for grinding the other wheel position. The structure and mounting of the dressing tool on the support is such that it is precisely positioned in each of its two positions for dressing the grinding surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4966055
Abstract: A device for sharpening chain saw cutter teeth includes a rigid disc member which has an abrasive coating deposited on its outer circumferential edge. The abrasive coating has a circumferential outer grinding surface which, when viewed in cross-section on a plane which is perpendicular to and radial to the disc member, has a curvature which is adapted to conform to the curvature of a concave surface in a common type of chain saw cutter tooth. The device can be mounted to a common rotary tool such as a bench grinder or a portable grinder to manually sharpen a chain saw in an inexpensive and efficient manner.

  • Patent number: 4903553
Abstract: A pair of grinding wheel dressing tools are mounted on a common support slidably mounted in a base secured in a fixed position adjacent a grinding wheel. The support has adjustment for repositioning it as the grinding wheel wears and requires dressing. The adjustment for the support maintains the pair of wheel dressers in their selected dressing planes as adjusted positioning between the wheel dressers and the grinding wheel occurs.

  • Patent number: 4750387
Abstract: An automatic dual side grinder is disclosed. A circular saw blade is supported and rotated in angular increments for grinding of each saw tooth. A pair of radially-opposed, parallel grinding wheels are reciprocated, by a crank assembly radially of the blade to grind opposite sides of each tooth. The crank assembly is driven continuously by a DC electric motor. An electric control circuit for the motor has two subcircuits, each including a resistor which determines motor speed. Control is switched between the subcircuits synchronously with reciprocation by a switch actuated by a rotating cam on the crank assembly. The resistors are preferably variable rheostats. Different rheostat settings are used to grind a saw tooth at one speed and retract the grinder at a second, higher speed.

  • Patent number: 4677881
Abstract: A chain saw sharpening device having a generally U-shaped frame defined by an upper web and first and second parallel side walls for overlying the chain and the guide bar of the chain saw. The frame includes an open area near the center of the upper web defining a sharpening area. Clamping screws are associated with the frame to secure the frame to the cutting bar and an additional clamping screw is associated with the frame for engaging the link of the tooth to be sharpened in order to fix its position with respect to the sharpening area of the frame. A tooth stop for adjusting the position of the tooth with respect to the sharpening area of the frame is mounted on a sliding block received in a keyway in the upper web of the frame, the keyway being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the channel in the cutting bar for the chain.

  • Patent number: 4677882
Abstract: A saw blade supported on a slip-on arbor has a pitch which is greater than the maximum possible stroke of the feeding means. For this reason each individual tooth of the saw blade is pushed in two successive forward strokes, first into an intermediate position by a secondary pawl and then into a working position by a principal pawl. During the advance caused by the secondary pawl the latter is supported at a stop which is formed at a drag lever. The drag lever is pivotable about the slip-on arbor and comprises a guide engaged by a pin. The stop thus moves back and forth on a circular arc about the slip-on arbor causing the secondary pawl to engage a certain location of the tooth face of a tooth it is advancing.

The axis of rotation of the third member on the second member is preferably inclined at 45.degree. to the other axes of rotation and the three axes intersect at a common point which is preferably at the center of a workpiece mounted on the table surface of fourth member. In this way the workpiece can be presented to a tool at any desired angular disposition with little or no positional displacement.

  • Patent number: 4625594
Abstract: In view of the production of saw blades, a continuous sheet metal strip first runs through a hardening surface. Subsequently, the teeth are ground by a grinder. Thereafter, the sheet metal strip is passed through a grinder comprising two parallel grinding wheels to process by the grinding wheel end sides the sides of the sheet metal strip. The outer ends of the laterally projecting teeth are worked by another grinder. After such a treatment of the sheet metal strips, saw blades are formed by cutting off individual length sections.
