  • Patent number: 6978701
Abstract: A wrench has a head portion (10) adapted to engage and apply torque to a workpiece, including a ring member (14) which surrounds the workpiece and has a fixed end (16) and a free end (18) such that, when the ring engages a workpiece and a torque is applied in a predetermined direction (48), the ring closes around the workpiece, increasing the grip between the wrench and the workpiece even if the workpiece is substantially worn, damaged or undersized.

  • Patent number: 5960679
Abstract: A ratcheting, open-end wrench concurrently engages more than half the corners of a nub during torquing. In preferred embodiments a wrench has a contacting cavity for receiving and torquing a nut, bolt head or other angularized nub. A chain carries a plurality of teeth about the inner perimeter of the cavity, and the chain is ratcheted so that the teeth move readily in one direction, but can be blocked from moving in the opposite direction. The teeth are arranged on the chain such that the cavity changes shape from an open configuration in which the nub can be received into the cavity, and a closed configuration in which the nub is locked into the cavity.

  • Patent number: 4691428
Abstract: Disclosed is a spanner wrench for and method of removing a torque-locked torsion spring from a winding cone. The wrench retrieves and engages the terminal end of the spring to apply both a radially outwardly directed force to such terminal end of the spring while simultaneously applying a tangentially-directed force which is counter to the torque lock to remove the spring from the cone without damage to the cone. In its preferred form the wrench is adjustable so as to be able to accommodate spring and cone assemblies of widely varying diameters.

  • Patent number: 4290180
Abstract: A fixture for mounting sprocket wheels on and removing them from the free-wheel units of bicycles, comprising a first tool in the form of an elongated metal plate, having a handgrip and a functional part provided with a plurality of recesses shaped to receive and mate with elements of a free-wheel unit, and cooperating with at least two locking pin members, and a second tool comprising a handle, provided at one end with a half-moon shaped body having a length of bicycle transmission chain pivotally connected to one end thereof. The recesses in said first tool are apt to mate with the outer profile as well as with the wall of an inner hole of the free-wheel unit elements having to be applied to said tool. The second tool comprises, in order to engage the sprocket wheels of said free-wheel unit, on one hand said transmission chain length and, on the other hand, a pair of chain links mounted so as to form an articulated parallelogram.

  • Patent number: 4160394
Abstract: A wrench adapted to turn a rotatable workpiece or tool about its central axis. The wrench comprises an elongated handle received through a bracket having an inwardly facing surface that engages the workpiece or tool. A pivotal connection between the inner end of the handle and the bracket permits adjustment of the handle about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal handle axis. A flexible loop is provided as a work-engaging member. It has one end connected to the inner end of the handle at one side of the pivot axis and its remaining end connected to the inner end of the handle at the opposite side of the pivot axis. Adjustment means is provided by manipulation of a sleeve surrounding a rigid inner handle section or shaft, the sleeve being both rotatable and axially movable with respect to the inner shaft. Radial cam surfaces are formed on the inner end of the sleeve and the outer end of the bracket to vary the angular position of the handle with respect to the bracket about the transverse pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 4138910
Abstract: A chain wrench has a handle having a chain element pivoted to the handle by a pair of links to permit passage of the free end of the chain between the links, whereby the chain may be wrapped in full circumscribing relation to a workpiece. The handle has a camming surface and teeth elements positioned to confront the exposed surface of the chain when it is wrapped around the workpiece. The chain has a cleated surface on one side and has a smooth surface on the opposite side. In one mode of operation, the cleated surface confronts the workpiece to engage the same, whereby the cam surface causes the cleats to grip the workpiece and anchor the chain at that point when said handle is actuated to apply torque to the workpiece, the smooth surface permitting the chain to slide over said camming surface prior to applying torquing action upon said handle to afford snug engagement of the chain about substantially the entire circumference of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4008636
Abstract: The ratchet wrench of this invention is of two piece construction comprising a rigid pawl handle, and a spring strap cooperating with the pawl handle. The pawl handle has a squared-off end and is provided with two integral pawl teeth extending from one side, which are adapted to engage and drive a splined bit. The spring strap is u-shaped, extending over the squared end and pawl teeth of the handle, and along both sides of the handle. The spring strap is fixed to the handle sides at its two co-extending ends to hold the spring strap and pawl handle in substantially fixed position. The closed end of the spring strap extends in an arc over the squared end of the pawl handle in such a way as to define a D-shaped opening, adapted to receive and to precisely position the splined bit.
