Abstract: A process of manufacturing sinusoidal shaped sealing rings is provided in which the rings are machined from solid bars of material. The rings are machined from the outer diameter of the bar by means of OD turning, trepanning or face-grooving tool and a parting tool. All of the tools synchronously oscillate precisely with the spindle by means of computer control to form the sinusoidal shape. The remaining material is then salvaged and retained at a smaller diameter than it started. The smaller diameter bar is then used to make smaller diameter rings at a later date.

  • Patent number: 5894771
Abstract: Process and arrangement for cutting and/or chamfering pipe front rims of pipes, in particular thick-walled pipes which are used for manufacturing ball bearings. The process includes the steps of measuring the actual external diameter of the pipe or inputting the data of the nominal external diameter of the pipe, moving of at least one cutting head towards abutting contact with the exterior surface of the pipe in a rapid transverse motion in accordance with measurements stored in a control unit, switching the feed motion and/or the cutting speed to conform to the machining process which has been adapted to the material of the pipe for the rapid cutting of a ring piece from the pipe blank. The external periphery of the pipe generally consisting of a hard zone which is being cut by a slower cutting speed and said cutting speed is increased once said hard zone has been fully traversed by the cutting tools mounted on the cutting head.

  • Patent number: 5887501
Abstract: A portable end prep facer for refurbishing piping components in the field comprises a chuck to which a cylindrical mandrel is affixed where the chuck can be centrally mounted relative to a longitudinal axis of the piping component by affixing the chuck either to the I.D. or the O.D. of the piping component. A non-rotatable torque housing surrounds the mandrel and is longitudinally positionable there along. A cutting head assembly is journaled for rotation about the mandrel by means of bearings mounted in the torque housing and coapting with an annular race formed in a face plate of the cutting head assembly. Mounted on the face plate is a variable speed reversing drive mechanism that couples to a lead screw that forms a part of a tool support guide member. A sliding head is affixed to the lead screw and it, in turn, supports a tool bit holder that can be manually adjusted to set the depth of cut when machining the flange portion of a piping component being repaired.

  • Patent number: 5852962
Abstract: Apparatus for reconditioning the seal shoulders of threaded tubular connections, whether of single or multiple seal shoulder configuration, which non-threadably engages the connection for alignment. For box connections, the apparatus has two circular plates disposed on a shaft, with a cutting surface on one face of each plate. The shaft is rotably and slidably disposed within two conical mandrels which non-threadably engage the threads of the box connection. The mandrels are spring biased toward one end of the apparatus. The apparatus is positioned with the mandrels within the box connection, bearing against the thread crests. The shaft is rotated and pushed toward the connection, bringing the cutting means into rotating contact with the seal shoulders of the connection, for resurfacing and alignment of the seal shoulders. For pin connections, the shaft is connected to a drum having circular plates at each end. The circular plates carry cutting surfaces.
