  • Patent number: 5749274
Abstract: A cylindrical member used as an electrophotographic photosensitive drum or a developing sleeve has a cylindrical surface with a high shape accuracy (straightness and roundness). In cutting the outer circumferential surface of a cylindrical work by cutting tools rotating around the work, clamp portions of a right work holder and a left work holder are inserted into the two ends of the work. The work is held by abutting these tapered surfaces against circular ridge portions formed in the inner edges of end faces of the work and pressing the work in the axial direction.

  • Patent number: 5732728
Abstract: A method for inserting a valve in a line includes providing a valve body that assembles on and rotates about an existing pipe. A first sealing mechanism is provided on the valve body that enables a user to selectively open (unseal) and close (seal) a gate access opening through the valve body. At least one cutting assembly is provided on the valve body for cutting the pipe as the valve body is rotated about the pipe, as well as a removably mountable gate assembly. The method proceeds by assembling the valve body on the pipe, rotating the valve body about the pipe with the cutting assembly and without the gate assembly, operating the cutting assembly to form the cut in the pipe (and removing any debris), mounting the gate assembly on the valve body, and then opening the gate access opening to enable movement of the gate through the gate access opening to a closed gate position within the cut in the pipe.

Abstract: Systems and methods for cutting a well casing and then capping the cut well casing are provided. A well casing cutting assembly having a tensioned wire cutting element may first be moved into position relative to the well casing and operated so that the cutting element reciprocates transversely (i.e., in saw-like fashion) while simultaneously being advanced forwardly into cutting relationship with the well casing. The cutting assembly is removed from the cut well casing and replaced with a well capping assembly having a shield enclosure and a thread cutting subassembly. The thread cutting subassembly includes an interiorly threaded pipe coupling which rigidly carries a normally open, remotely controlled valving assembly and is mounted to the shield enclosure so as to be capable of both rotational and vertical movements relative to the cut well casing.

  • Patent number: 5076122
Abstract: A cutting insert having four symmetrically located cutting edges is mounted on a cutting insert holder, which is in turn mounted on a rotary driver. One of the cutting edges projects out from the cutting insert holder. The rotary driver rotates the projecting cutting edge along a circular path. A tube end to be finished is held in contact with projecting cutting edge being colinear with the centerline of the tube. A plurality of cutting insert holders each has a cutting insert mounted thereon with the respective projecting cutting edges being located at varying distances from the axis of rotation. The design of the cutting edges also varies. Tube ends having different radii, wall thicknesses, cross section, or chamfers are finished by successively mounting on the rotary driver the cutting insert holders having projecting cutting edges located the required distances from the axis of rotation and having the appropriate designs.

  • Patent number: 5072953
Abstract: A mechanism for mounting a generally circular, hollow pipe 54 coaxial with a machine tool has a central shaft 10 with a dome-shaped head 12. A number of fingers 20 are equi-angularly spaced about the shaft 10 and pivoted at one end on the head 12. The fingers 20 in effect form a segmented cone. A collar is slidably mounted on the shaft and is coupled to the fingers by respective connecting members such that sliding movement of the collar towards and away from the head pivots the fingers radially of the shaft. In use, the open end of the pipe is located over the mechanism and the position of the collar adjusted to expand the fingers 20 to grip the inner wall of the pipe and hold the pipe firmly coaxial with the shaft 10. The end of the latter remote from the head 12 is secured to a machine tool axis to enable accurate machining of the pipe 54 by suitable tools which are mounted for movement about the machine tool axis.

  • Patent number: 4976176
Abstract: The present invention relates to a module for use with a portable lathe to machine an area of a pipe wherein a cutting tool is supported such that the orientation of its axial path of travel varies as the tool rotates around the pipe. The module feeds a cutting tool along an axial feed path that extends substantially parallel to a line connecting spaced apart reference points located on opposite sides of the area of the pipe to be machined. The orientation of this reference line varies with respect to the longitudinal axis of the pipe as the module is driven around the axis of the pipe. The mechanism to feed the cutting tool along its axial and rotational cutting paths has first and second drive shafts extending substantially perpendicular to each other. The mechanism is simplified by having a first tool support member pivotally attached to the portable lathe so as to pivot about an axis coincident with the axis of rotation of the first drive shaft.
