  • Patent number: 5388488
Abstract: A system for cutting windows or openings in mats used in framing works of art. The system involves the use of a variably positionable head to which a cutting blade is attached for cutting a beveled edge in the mat. A longitudinal drive means, transverse drive means, and orthogonal drive form a combined positioning device capable of moving the head in any direction. A rotational drive means may also form part of the combined positioning device for rotating and adjusting the position of the blade. A linear variable displacement transducer is coupled to the head and operatively coupled to the orthogonal drive to maintain the head a constant distance away from the mat so the blade cuts a continuously smooth beveled edge in the mat.

  • Patent number: 5365820
Abstract: A device for moving a long article vertically, while always being held in a horizontal position, regardless of where and in what direction a force is exerted on the long article, and for use in, for example, a paper cutting machine has two actuation levers, each with two sloped end portions that are juxtaposed such that their slopes are opposed to each other. A bedplate is provide with guide members fixed on the two end portions of the bedplate for guiding the actuation levers to slide horizontally in parallel to each other. Drive members attached to the long article are mounted on the guide members and are associated with compression springs for biasing the drive members in an upward direction and to a predetermined height. The drive members are guided by the guide members to slide vertically and against the bias of the spring to abut the sloped end portions of the two actuation members such that the actuation levers are horizontally moved.

  • Patent number: 4686876
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting sheet material has a cutting blade on a carriage which is displaced along a guide member to co-operate with a fixed blade. The apparatus is removably mounted on a structure which provides a support surface for the material to be cut and, to this end, there are clamping means for removably securing the cutting apparatus to the structure.

  • Patent number: 4685366
Abstract: Lightweight, portable apparatus for cutting a wide range of materials available in sheet form, such as matboard, glass, light plastic, and leather. The invention lies in the unification of its cutting tool guide tract with the means of fixing in place the material to be cut. Four pegs are attached to the base of the apparatus for aligning the sheet to be cut. Equally important is the means by which it is automatically held in place during the cutting operation. Pieces of foam rubber or the like are inlaid in the base of the apparatus so that when the operator is pressing down on the cutting tool the resultant force normal to the supporting surface is sufficient to prevent lateral motion of the apparatus. Thus, no bulky and awkward clamping devices need to be used to affix the cutter to its supporting table.

  • Patent number: 4662258
Abstract: An automated means and method for cutting matte board and other soft materials. A matte board having a front display surface and spaced rear surface is placed on a planar support in facing contact with the display surface. After the matte is fixed into position, at least one cutting blade is caused to initially move simultaneously in both a vertical and horizontal direction to make a bevel cut from the rear surface through to the front surface. Once the cutting blade has passed through the front surface, the blade is caused to move horizontally so as to form a bevel cut along a predetermined length of the matte board.

  • Patent number: 4641556
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for the cutting of rectangular windows on mats provides a pair of blades on respective tracks which are simultaneously displaced to cut a pair of mutually perpendicular cuts in a blank positioned on a worktable. The blade carriages are actuated by pneumatic cylinders and in turn carry pneumatic cylinders for raising and lowering the blades. The margins of the mat are defined by adjustable bars whose perpendicular distances from a reference point, represented by the junction of the paths of the cuts, can be set.

  • Patent number: 4635362
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for cutting a sheet using a hand-held knife. The apparatus includes a cutting table and a clamp having a gripping edge for holding the sheet against the cutting table. The clamp provides freely accessible lateral guides for locating the cutting blade close to the sheet-gripping edge and for orienting the cutting blade and the axis of the knife handle in a near-vertical plane.

  • Patent number: 4633745
Abstract: Apparatus for longitudinally and transversely trimming articles moldingly formed on plastic sheet which is brought by means of a pair of clamp chains between longitudinally movable pointed tip knives and longitudinally extended holder members as well as transversely movable pointed tip knives and transversely extended holder member respectively held in retracted position and then trimmed by moving said knives and holder members to forwarded position and by moving said knives. Said sheet is formed in advance with transversely and longitudinally extended ridges so that said moving knives cannot sever the sheet at said ridges, whereby trimmed articles fall down by gravity and waste portion kept in one piece is brought out by said clamp chains to be collected.

  • Patent number: 4631999
Abstract: A board saw exhibits a frame on which a guide beam is horizontally slidable. A sawing unit is mounted with vertical mobility on the guide beam and is connected by a cable to a compensating weight. In order to absorb the reaction forces generated by the saw reliably in the immediate sawing region, a horizontal support beam is mounted for vertical displacement and likewise connected by a cable to a compensating weight. The installation is preferably wired so that the support beam follows automatically to the level of the saw blade when the sawing unit is pivoted into the horizontal cutting position. For an accident-proof support of the board (P), a row of support arms is provided on the upper girder of the frame and also on the movable support beam, and these support arms are arranged staggered so that when the support beam is raised they interlace comb fashion and ensure a correct accident-proof support of the board.

  • Patent number: 4599925
Abstract: A system for cutting fiberboard wherein a table is provided for supporting the fiberboard with a cutter mounted above the table whereby the cutter is adapted to engage the insulation. The cutter is movable vertically for adjusting its position relative to the insulation and the mount for the cutter is provided with a drive whereby the cutter can be driven longitudinally and transversely of the table for cutting the fiberboard into various shapes. A hold-down device is associated with the cutter for movement therewith and for pressing against the insulation during the cutting operation to thereby prevent displacement of the insulation relative to the table. The cutter preferably comprises a cutting blade rotatably supported on a vertical shaft with the shaft and blade having freedom of movement during a cutting operation.
