  • Patent number: 6758123
Abstract: A miter saw is provided having a support arm that is pivotally mounted to a base for adjustment of a pivot angle, the saw including a detent mechanism to provide pivot stops at common bevel angles, such as at 45° L, 0° (vertical), and 45° R. The detent mechanism includes a step-shaped, arcuate detent block mounted to the support arm in an adjustable manner to permit the accurate setting of the block in a home position. In an embodiment, a pair of set screws acts against opposite ends of the detent block, permitting precise adjustment in either direction. An axially movable detent pin is mounted to the base to contact against stepped surfaces of the block. The arm is free to pivot within a bevel angle range defined by one of the surfaces. Steps between surfaces act as a pivot stops, abutting the pin at a corresponding predetermined angle of the arm.

Abstract: It is a miter saw table that has adjustable measuring tapes. The tape sections can be calibrated so that the zero point on the tape is always set at the outer surface of the blade. This is done by using slidable wings that can be secured to a base. The wings a readjusted until the built-in tapes match a control tape. Once the wings are set, cuts can be made quickly by either setting a stop at the precise distance needed, or by sliding the board under the blade until the end of the board aligns with the desired measurement. The board can then be accurately cut without having to measure and mark the board first. Moreover, if the blade is changed during the course of work. The measuring system can be quickly re-calibrated to the thickness of the new blade and cuts can immediately be resumed.

The rotatable stop member and the stop portion may be positioned so that those elements contact when the cutting unit is at a predetermined bevel position, such as a vertical (0°) bevel position, relative to the workpiece support surface.

  • Patent number: 6502493
Abstract: A table saw includes a work support table that defines a blade slot therethrough and at least one guide groove oriented generally parallel to the slot. A pair of trunnions are attached to the lower surface of the work support table, with at least one of the trunnions defining an adjustment opening having opposing sides. A cradle assembly has a blade mounted therein driven by a motor, and it is supported by the trunnions such that at least a portion of the blade extends through the slot in the work support surface. To provide adjustment of the blade heel, an adjustment member is received by the adjustment opening in the trunnion and is rotatably attached to the lower surface of the work support table. Rotation of the adjustment member causes the adjustment member to contact one of the opposing sides of the adjustment opening, thus moving the trunnion to adjust the position of the blade relative to the guide groove.

Abstract: A compound miter saw includes a unique table assembly which incorporates a table locking mechanism and a detent overide mechanism. The lock mechanism incorporated into the table assembly is movable between two positions. The first position locks the table to the miter saw and the second position permits rotation of the table. The detent overide mechanism is normally engaged such that it will releasably hold the table in one of a plurality of popular miter angles. The detent overide mechanism allows the operator to disengage the detent system to avoid the holding of the table during its rotation.

A turntable is mounted on the base for rotation about a vertical axis and a support is mounted on the turntable. A bevel angle adjustment mechanism is mounted on the support and includes a housing movable about a horizontal bevel angle axis. A cutting unit is connected to the housing for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis between a cutting position and a non-cutting position. The bevel angle adjustment mechanism supports cutting unit for movement in a first direction from a vertical position to a bevel angle position greater than 45° from vertical. The bevel angle adjustment mechanism also supports the cutting unit for movement in a second direction opposite to the first direction to approximately a negative 5° bevel angle position.

  • Patent number: 6453786
Abstract: A machine tool has a work table which defines a working surface and has a cutting tool which is attached to and movable with respect to the work table. The position of the cutting tool with respect to the working surface is controlled by a mechanism which elevates the cutting tool with respect to the working surface and angulates the cutting tool with respect to the working surface. The cutting tool is mounted to a support plate which is pivotably attached to the work table. The elevating mechanism includes a threaded rod and a nut which engages a pivoting link. The pivoting link also engages the cutting tool. Rotation of the threaded rod pivots the link which in turn raises and lowers the cutting tool. A spring biases the cutting tool towards its lower position to remove play between the components. The angulating mechanism includes a lever, two cams and a locking rod. Rotation of the lever moves the locking rod longitudinally due to the action between the two cams.

Abstract: A bevel angle indicator for a saw is disclosed. The saw 10 consists of a table 16, a pivot support 26 pivotally mounted with respect to the table 16 about a bevel axis 92 and a mechanical saw blade pivotally mounted with respect to the pivot support 26 about a second axis 28. The pivot support 26 pivots on a pivot block 27 attached to the table 16. A gearing mechanism couples the pivot block 27 and the pivot support 26 to a dial which indicates the angle between the surface of the table 16 and the plane of the saw blade. The gearing mechanism comprises a rack 50 attached to the pivot block 27 and a pinion 54 rotatably journalled in the pivot support 26. Adjustment of the bevel angle of the saw 10 causes the pinion 54 to advance along the rack 50 and therefore rotate relative to the pivot support 26. The pinion 54 is attached to a sleeve 52, the free end of which carries a pointer 56; the pivot support 26 carries a scale 58. The pointer 56 and scale 58 indicate with accuracy the current bevel angle of the saw.
