Adjustable Angular Relationship Patents (Class 83/473)
  • Publication number: 20020005103
Abstract: A machine tool has a work table which defines a working surface and has a cutting tool which is attached to and movable with respect to the work table. The position of the cutting tool with respect to the working surface is controlled by a mechanism which elevates the cutting tool with respect to the working surface and angulates the cutting tool with respect to the working surface. The cutting tool is mounted to a support plate which is pivotably attached to the work table. The elevating mechanism includes a threaded rod and a nut which engages a pivoting link. The pivoting link also engages the cutting tool. Rotation of the threaded rod pivots the link which in turn raises and lowers the cutting tool. A spring biases the cutting tool towards its lower position to remove play between the components. The angulating mechanism includes a lever, two cams and a locking rod. Rotation of the lever moves the locking rod longitudinally due to the action between the two cams.

  • Patent number: 6142051
Abstract: A bevel angle indicator for a saw 10 consists of a table 16, a pivot support 26 pivotally mounted with respect to the table 16 about a bevel axis 92 and a mechanical saw blade pivotally mounted with respect to the pivot support 26 about a second axis 28. The pivot support 26 pivots on a pivot block 27 attached to the table 16. A gearing mechanism couples the pivot block 27 and the pivot support 26 to a dial which indicates the angle between the surface of the table 16 and the plane of the saw blade. The gearing mechanism comprises a rack 50 attached to the pivot block 27 and a pinion 54 rotatably journalled in the pivot support 26. Adjustment of the bevel angle of the saw 10 causes the pinion 54 to advance along the rack 50 and therefore rotate relative to the pivot support 26. The pinion 54 is attached to a sleeve 52, the free end of which carries a pointer 56; the pivot support 26 carries a scale 58. The pointer 56 and scale 58 indicate with accuracy the current bevel angle of the saw.

  • Patent number: 6101914
Abstract: A compound miter saw has a unique locking system for locking the bevel angle support housing to the table assembly once the desired bevel angle has been set. The locking system includes a cam and a handle each with an angular cam surface. When the two cam surfaces are aligned, the support housing is free to pivot around a supporting shaft. When the handle is rotated on the shaft, the two cam surfaces are moved to a non-aligned position. This non-alignment of cam surfaces causes axial movement of the cam along the shaft which in turn forces the support housing against the table assembly to lock the support housing in the desired bevel angle.

As a result, clashing of the blade assembly 30 with the underside of the table 14 or the frame 12 is automatically avoided, thereby simplifying use of the table saw 10 during the making of bevel cuts.

Abstract: A miter saw includes a support mechanism for supporting a miter saw unit relative to a base in such a manner that the miter saw unit is both vertically and laterally pivotable. A position determining mechanism serves to selectively determine the position of the saw unit at any of positions including a vertical position where a saw blade is positioned substantially vertically relative to the base, and leftward and rightward pivoted positions where the saw blade is inclined laterally leftwardly and laterally rightwardly from the vertical position by a predetermined angle, respectively. The position determining mechanism includes movable side stopper members and fixed side stopper members on which the movable side stopper members abut, respectively. The movable side stopper members are mounted on a movable member which pivots laterally with the miter saw unit. The fixed side stopper members are mounted on a fixed member which is non-laterally pivotally movably mounted on the base.

Abstract: A combination mitre and bevel saw 10 includes an elongate fence guide 74 operatively connected to the saw blade assembly 20 and pivotable between a retracted position and an extended position in the plan of the saw blade 26. A spring 72 biases the fence guide 74 into its retracted position. The fence guide 74 may be pulled down by the saw operator into its extended position so as to indicate the position at which the saw blade 36 will impinge upon the workpiece and so as to allow the setting of two fence members 17a, 17b accordingly. The fence guide 74 includes a leading edge 78, which indicates the width of cut which the saw blade will make in the workpiece and a wider portion 80, trailing the leading edge 78, which indicates the optimum spacing of the fence members 17a, 17b.

Abstract: A compound miter saw with an adjustable/bypassable bevel stop is disclosed. The compound miter saw includes a turntable rotatably mounted on a supporting frame. A power driven saw blade is pivotally mounted to the turntable and moves along a predetermined path from an upper raised to a lower operational position that includes a saw blade slot in the turntable. A bevel adjusting features selectively rotates the power driven saw blade relative to the turntable. The adjustable/bypassable bevel stop includes predetermined bevel stop settings at set angles, for example, such as 0.degree. and 45.degree., as well as an over-riding feature when angles either less than or greater than the predetermined bevel stop settings are desired. The over-riding feature does not require re-adjustment of the predetermined bevel stop settings.
