With Means To Reciprocate Carrier Patents (Class 83/487)
  • Patent number: 5199221
Abstract: A portable tube cutting apparatus which facilitates smooth even cuts. The apparatus has a frame supporting a movable carriage, a motor driven cutting tool secured to the carriage, and vise-like fasteners for supporting the frame from a stationary object, such as the tube which is to be cut. A pair of spaced parallel rods, secured to the frame, pass through a pair of corresponding cylindrically bored guides attached to the carriage to restrict movement of the carriage to a linear path which passes through the tube which is to be cut while the apparatus is being used. A rack and pinion arrangement operably connected to a lever is preferably provided for smoothly advancing the carriage toward the tube.

  • Patent number: 5134917
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method of fabricating tank wrap of desired thickness having fibers oriented generally in the thickness direction from lengths of insulation material having fibers oriented generally in the length direction. The method comprises several sequential steps. The first step is positioning the lengths of insulation material lengthwise along a first movable track conveyor, such that the fibers are oriented generally parallel to the direction of conveyance as the lengths progress downstream in a longitudinal direction along the conveyor. Second step is severing the insulation material completely across the length, at intervals equal to the desired thickness of the tank wrap to be fabricated. Next the cut lengths of insulation material are positioned lengthwise across a second movable track conveyor such that the fibers are now oriented generally perpendicular to the direction of conveyance, and in an abutting relationship.

  • Patent number: 4864906
Abstract: A core slabbing machine for the removal of paper wound on a mill roll core, to thereby permit reuse of the core. The machine includes a horizontal core-receiving mandrel and a carraige which moves horizontally back and forth above, and aligned with, the mandrel. The carriage carries a freely rotatable cutting wheel which is forced downwardly by a pneumatic cylinder onto the paper to be removed from a core. Each horizontal pass of the rotary cutting wheel cuts through a number of layers of paper determined by the force on the cutting wheel. This action is automatically controlled and continues until the cutting wheel reaches the core surface exterior after a number of cutting passes. The freely rotatable cutting wheel exerts a force on the core and paper substantially at right angles to the core and its supporting mandrel, thus obviating the need to anchor the core relative to the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4619163
Abstract: Precut pieces of wood of like configuration are stacked in a hopper from the lower end of which they are advanced one-by-one by a reciprocable pusher onto a horizontally disposed work station. As soon as a workpiece is positioned on the station it is automatically clamped into place, after which two rotary saws, which are mounted adjacent opposite ends of the station, are reciprocated from retracted to advanced positions, during which movement they cut away portions of the workpiece at opposite ends thereof. As soon as the saws have advanced passed the workpiece, they are retracted slightly away from opposite ends of the workpiece, so that they will not reengage the workpiece when they return to their starting positions. When the saws are retracted the now-cut workpiece is automatically released and then ejected from the work station, after which a cycling relay automatically causes another workpiece to be shifted onto the work station so that the above-noted steps are repeated.

Abstract: Irradiated tubular rectangular fuel channels from a nuclear reactor are temporarily stored under water. In order to dispose of these highly radioactive channels and to ship them to permanent burial grounds, the channels must be placed in specially designed shipping casks under water. In order to reduce the volume of the channel so as to economize on the use of the casks, the channels are cut along their longitudinal edges to form four plates which are then nested before being placed in the storage casks, thereby greatly increasing the number of channels which may be stored in each cask. The cutting is done under water by an apparatus having four roller cutters which are positioned along the outside of the four edges or corners of a channel and are moved longitudinally down the channel edges in a reciprocating motion until the four side plates of the channel are severed.
