And Means To Rotate Tool Patents (Class 83/488)
  • Patent number: 4334450
Abstract: A saw-carrying carriage consists of a supporting frame movable along horizontal guides, onto which frame there is vertically movably mounted a structure which carries the circular saw and the electric motor for driving it. The vertically movable structure comprises a pair of vertical rods slidable within vertical tubular guides secured to the supporting frame. The top ends of the vertical rods are conically shaped, and the top ends of the vertical tubular guides have downwardly directed hollow conical seats. The bottom ends of the vertical rods of the movable structure are connected to a bar to which are also secured the stems of two piston-and-cylinder units, the cylinders of each unit being secured to the supporting frame of the carriage. In this manner, retraction of the stems inside the cylinders will promote lifting of the movable unit which carries the saw.

Abstract: A log sawing apparatus is described for enabling a single person to control the sawing operation at a single log sawing station. The apparatus includes means for prealigning the log with respect to a projected grid in a first plane. After being prealigned, the log is transferred to the log sawing station where the log is held stationary. A saw carriage with a main saw thereon moves past the log sawing station to cut the log lengthwise. The log is held stationary by a log holding means that may be moved laterally to progressively feed the log laterally with the sawing plane. Log rotating means is provided at the log sawing station to rotate the log 90.degree. or 180.degree. to progressively present various log sides to the sawing plane. • Patent number: 4183514
Abstract: In an automatic system for spreading material, such as fabric, rolled on bolts, a spreading portion includes a driven carriage supported for reciprocal movement over a fixed table and between two spaced catcher assemblies mounted on the table. A tensionless loop is maintained in the material as it is fed from a bolt carried by the carriage and spread over the table. Maximization of the spreading operation without damaging the material is accomplished by making the rate of carriage travel responsive to the rate of material feed. The catcher assemblies prevent the material from following the carriage upon each direction reversal, after which cutting means therein severs each end loop. A storage and loading portion is preferably utilized with the spreading portion. The storage and loading portion includes a conveyor for advancing bolts of material into engagement with an elevator assembly, which reloads the carriage. A microprocessor is utilized to control operation of the entire system.

  • Patent number: 4116095
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting a plurality of selected lengths from a rod-like workpiece. A plurality of annular saws or mills have cutting teeth formed on the inner annuli which have diameters greater than the diameter of the workpiece. The workpiece is passed through the annuli such that the distance between one saw and the end of the workpiece defines one selected length while the distances between each pair of adjacent saws define the other selected lengths. The saws and the workpiece are relatively rotated in opposite directions, while concurrently the saws are moved transversely to bring the teeth of the saws into cutting engagement with the workpiece. If the apparatus comprises two annular saws, the annular saws are moved in opposite transverse directions so that the saws are concurrently engaging opposite sides of the workpiece. The transverse movements of the saws are controlled such that the saw nearest the end of the workpiece completes its cut first.

  • Patent number: 4114493
Abstract: A cutter for cutting continuous stock materials into discrete lengths is disclosed. The cutting device includes a plurality of rotatable cutting tools or blades extending transversely across a cutting zone. The cutting tools are mounted in a common plane, are intermeshed, and are synchronously driven in opposite directions. The cutting zones of the intermeshed cutting tools overlap and thus the cutting device is capable of performing the cutting operation by movement in one direction through the material being cut. The cutting tools have opposed segments that carry cutting edges. In one form of tool, the cutting edges are spaced from the axis of rotation of the cutting tool by a distance that continuously increases in a direction opposite the direction of rotation of the cutting tool. This change in distance can be related to the speed of rotation of the cutting tools and the speed at which the cutting tools are advanced through the material being cut.

Abstract: In that type of sheet metal shear having upper and lower rotary cutters to which power is supplied, both to cut a sheet of metal overhanging a work table edge and to propel the shear along the line of cut, unexpected capacity is achieved. The upper and lower cutters are powered each with separate motor. The cutters are driven through bevel gear sets; the upper motor is positioned with clearance above the work table, with its shaft slanting downward to the bevel gear intersection. Using the separate upper motor eliminates the transmission of power along and across the upward slanting bridge portion of the frame aft of the cutters. With this function eliminated, the bridge portion may be lower, requiring less power to deflect the scrap being cut off. With this saving of power added to the saving from using the efficient bevel gear sets, heavier gauge sheets are slit with less power than heretofore required for thinner sheets.

  • Patent number: RE30689
Abstract: A foldable bench for converting a normally hand-held electrically powered circular saw into a table saw, wherein the bench is easily portable when folded and highly stable when in use. In particular, the bench employs four foldable leg members having floor engaging extremities movable from a first position wherein the leg members are contained entirely within the bench housing to a second position wherein the floor engaging extremities are positioned laterally beyond the lateral extremities of the upper surface of the bench to thereby provide a compact, portable unit when the leg members are folded and an extremely stable bench when the leg members are extended. Simplicity in design is achieved by extrusion forming the upper surface from a single unitary member having means for slidingly mounting the portable hand-held circular saw and containing side grooves for receiving auxiliary attachment fasteners.
