  • Patent number: 6003421
Abstract: A knife assembly 10 for transversely severing at least one elongated web of material including: a sharpened blade member 12, a blade holder 14, a blade holder support assembly 16, an adjustable biasing member 18, a carriage assembly 20, and a backing member 44. The blade member 12 and the blade holder 14 are removably retained in the support assembly 16 by a quick release pin 26. The support assembly 16 is attached to the biasing member 18 by way of a swivel connection 32, The biasing member maintains abutment of the sharpened edge of the blade 12 with the backing member 44 during the cutting operation. A self-orienting assembly maintains the blade 12 in a preferred orientation with respect to the carriage assembly 20 during any period that the blade 12 is not abutting the backing member 44. The cutting assembly 10 is also capable of cutting moving material and simultaneously winding the leading end of the severed material on a cylindrical core that also acts as the backing member 44.

Abstract: An apparatus and process are disclosed for removal of a stripe of soft reflective material of uniform width from the surface of a mirror by using a blade having a large included angle to inhibit curling of the blade during the cutting operation which could result in damage to the glass substrate of the mirror. The cutting blade is maintained at a low blade angle with respect to the mirror surface to produce minimal chipping along the cut edge and to minimize the force exerted on the coating normal to the glass surface which could deform the flat mirror. The mirror is mounted in a cutting mechanism containing a movable carriage on which the blade is mounted to provide very accurate straightness of the travel of the blade along the mirror.

Abstract: In a tape cutter capable of cutting a tape completely and enhancing the durability of the cutter blade, a cutter holder is rotated by the engagement of a holder gear portion with a lever gear portion according to the rotation of an operation lever so that a cutter blade is moved toward a tape face. A sliding projection slides upwardly along an inclined face and the cutter holder is moved in the widthwise direction of the tape T. Therefore the cutter blade 13 presses the tape face and cuts the tape T while sliding in the widthwise direction of the tape T.

Abstract: A system for dampening deflections which occur in an elongate rotating fly-knife includes camming elements along the length of the beam carrying the fly-knife. A second beam spaced from the knife is also mounted for rotation and includes spaced apart camming elements adapted to rotate and contact the fly-knife camming elements at that point during the rotational cycle when the fly-knife will cut and/or perforate the material with which the apparatus of the present invention is employed. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the system is used to perforate, slit or cut plastic film, e.g., in the manufacture of bags. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the system is used with a coversheet winding machine. The rotating beams of the invention are preferably driven by a single motor to maintain registration of the knife camming elements with the support beam camming elements.

  • Patent number: 5152204
Abstract: An improvement is made to a die cutting press and to the method of die cutting in a press by providing two opposing and oppositely driven clamping bars which move together to clamp the die board and to accurately position the clamped die board at a predetermined location within the press. The press is operated to determine the adequacy of the cut produced by the die in sheet material fed into the press. If the cut is unsatisfactory, the opposing clamp bars are quickly driven apart thereby releasing the die board. The die board can be removed from the press and then manipulated or modified to cure any imperfection in the cut. The modified die board is then reinserted into the press and accurately repositioned at the predetermined location within the press by driving the opposing clamping bars towards each other against the die board.
