  • Patent number: 5188009
Abstract: A method for changing the direction of a cutting edge of a cutting plotter in order to align the cutting edge in the direction in which the initial portion of the desired cut will be made, prior to beginning a cut in the effective plotting area of a sheet mounted on a recording surface. By preliminarily aligning the cutting edge along the cutting direction, the cut can be made accurately along, for example, a straight line from the starting point of the cut. The method is performed with a cutting blade with a main edge directed diagonally upwardly from a cutting point, the cutting blade being rotatably supported in a holder for rotation around its axial center. The edge of the cutter can be aligned in a certain direction by first pressing the blade against a non-used portion of the sheet and moving the cutter therealong in a predetermined direction to cause rotation of the main edge of the cutter in the holder to align it in a first predetermined direction.

Abstract: In a method and apparatus for cutting sheet material wherein the material is cut in bites or segments by bringing in stepwise fashion successive lengthwise segments to a cutting station incomplete cutting of a line or pattern piece when the line or pattern piece is continued from one segment to another is avoided by a retracing of the line of cut in the vicinity of the line's or pattern piece's transition from one segment to another. Therefore, when the cutting tool, following the advancement of the material to bring a fresh segment to the cutting station, is returned to the vicinity of a previously cut point it retraces a portion of the previously cut line to promote complete separation of the desired material from the waste material despite possible relaxation or other shifting or mispositioning of the material between the times of the cutting tool's first and second arrivals at the transition point.

  • Patent number: 4813319
Abstract: An apparatus and improved method for transversely cutting strips of deformable material with a rotating cutting blade which is moved generally transversely across the strip at a predetermined rake angle and bevel angle. A vacuum applied to certain chambers of a platen draws the strip firmly against a supporting structure at two locations on opposite sides of a cutting line during the cut cycle. A lubricant is sprayed through nozzles onto the blade as it cuts the strip and blow-off nozzles remove excess lubricant during the cut and return cycles of the blade to prevent contamination of the cut strip edges. A release bar assists in disengaging the strip from the platen after the strip is cut. Grippers remove the cut strip and then an input conveyor advances the remaining strip toward the cutting line where the grippers pull the strip forward to a predetermined position for the next cut cycle.
