The ring and pinion drive allows for better balance in that the motor that drives the saw blade can be located at the rear of the saw blade, as opposed to the side of the blade as it is with conventional circular saws. This configuration also allows for greater cutting depth. The ring and pinion drive also allows for a smaller motor and a resulting lower cutting speed that, in turn, cuts down on dust emission.

  • Patent number: 5014584
Abstract: A machine is provided for cutting oval shapes in planar workpieces, wherein the blade is dynamically oriented so as to maintain its cutting axis constantly tangent to the line of cutting. It utilizes a pivotably mounted cutter head, to which is attached an orienting arm that is arcuately reciprocated by an element moving unidirectionally in a circle, the direction of circular movement being opposite to that in which the cutting head proceeds.

Abstract: A compass for sweeping an arc of a circle on a sheet of material comprises an annular base having a lower surface engageable with the material. A support member is rotatably supported on the base and a toolholder is mounted on the support member. The toolholder is moveable with the support and upon rotation of the support relative to the base, sweeps an arc of a circle. The toolholder has a toolpost to support a tool and permit movement of the tool relative to the support member in a direction generally normal to the sheet of material to facilitate movement of a tool mounted in the holder into and out of engagement with the sheet of material.

  • Patent number: 4878409
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting circular arcs or holes in a picture mat includes a flat base upon which the mat rests and a platform provided above the base . A disc member is suitably mounted for rotation adjacent the platform about a center axis. A crank mechanism having a axle extending perpendicularly through the disc member and a mounting arm attached to an extending perpendicular arm from the end of the axle are provided on the disc member. This crank mechanism is slidably mounted to the disc member. A cutting blade is then adjustable mounted along the mounting arm and at an angle to the mat. The circles or arcs are cut in the mat by rotation of the crank mechanism--at a location determined by the position of the crank mechanism and of the disc member, and with a diameter determined by the position of the cutting blade relative to the mounting arm.

Abstract: This machine is of the type comprising a frame (1) supporting a hopper (2) for charging the products, a cutting plate, an ejection plate (6a, 6b) for ejecting the cut products disposed under the cutting plate (4), and a device (13) for driving in rotation the cutting plate and the ejection plate. According to the invention, the ejection plate is driven in rotation in a direction opposed to that of the cutting plate. Advantageously, the speed of rotation of the ejection plate is higher than that of the cutting plate.

Abstract: A rotary cutter for cutting holes of various sizes in sheet material such as self-adhesive pads. The cutter includes a base to which a cover is pivotally mounted for movement between a lowered closed position where it overlies the base and a raised open position. The cover has upstanding side walls defining a cavity between the roof of the cover and the upper surface of the base. A blade carried by a blade arm rotates within the cavity for cutting holes in sheet material carried on the base. The blade arm is adjustably secured to one end of a shaft extending into the cavity which is journaled in a bearing sleeve in the roof of the cover permitting rotary as well as axial movement permitting the blade to be pressed downwardly to the sheet material during rotary cutting operations. A crank arm is mounted to the other end of the rotor shaft for imparting rotary motion to the blade arm.

  • Patent number: 4404836
Abstract: An improved apparatus for and a method of trimming an outwardly directed flange at the end of a metal container body and severing the ring of scrap removed employs two substantially semicircular concave cutters supported for rotation about spaced parallel axes disposed substantially in the plane of the flange to be trimmed and driven for rotation about their respective axes to engage the flange substantially simultaneously to sever the scrap ring around substantially the entire periphery of the container. The ring of scrap is cut into four pieces either by initially die-cutting or otherwise removing segments from opposed sides of the flange tangent to the trim line prior to engagement by the rotating arcuate cutters or alternatively, the arcuate cutters may sever the scrap as a complete ring and sever the ring into pieces upon continued movement in their arcuate paths past a stationary clipper block spaced below the container flange.

  • Patent number: 4237759
Abstract: The cutting action in a rotary slicer is provided by a pair of circular disc blades, which are mounted in apertures in a circular plate, which is rotated within an outer casing. The plate rotates adjacent a feeding chute at one side of the casing and the depth of the slice is adjusted by varying the distance of the blade in front of the circular plate. The cut slices pass between the blades and apertures into the rear of the casing, which discharges them downwardly. The blades are mounted on a lobular bracket supported on a central shaft in a fixed longitudinal position. The depth of cut is varied by moving the apertured plate back and forth along the shaft to a position governed by a C-shaped stop ring with a calibrated shaft extending outwardly from the rear shaft bearing. The plate is detachably secured to the shaft by a thumb screw accessible through an ample cut-out in the top of the rear casing.

  • Patent number: 4233800
Abstract: An improved envelope opener comprising first, second and third shear stations for shearing three edges of an envelope in sequence one edge at a time. Each shear station sequentially aligns the envelope by contacting the edge to be sheared, shears the contacted edge, and then releases the envelope. Each shear station includes a self-sharpening and self-aligning anvil assembly comprising a pivotable anvil which is spring-urged to an adjustable home position. The home position of the anvil is adjusted by means of a rotatable eccentric stop. During a shearing operation, the anvil is pivoted away from and then back towards the home position. An overly thick envelope will keep the anvil pivoted away from the home position to avoid a jam condition at the shear station. A peel back station downstream of the last shear station peels back the top panel of the envelope to expose the contents thereof.
