Abstract: A cutoff system for exterior siding which includes a flying punch and shear. The system includes a main carriage which is adapted to reciprocate and, in one direction of travel, move at the same speed as the siding to be cut. A pair of punches are then actuated to form the hanger and butt notches at the lateral edges of the siding. Upon withdrawal of the punches, the travel of the main cylinder is slowed such that the siding travels away from the punching area. Upon sensing the notched areas, the main carriage is again moved to travel at the same speed as the siding. The speed is timed such that the center of the notches is located below a shear. This shear is then actuated to form a single parting line across the siding. The carriage is then retracted to await the next cycle of the system. As such, with each cycle of the system, the notches are formed in the trailing and leading edges of adjacent panel segments, and the leading panel segment cut from the continuous siding.

  • Patent number: 4535665
Abstract: In a notching machine an upper knife is attached by an upper set collar to the head of a vertically moving ram for being turnable around an axis of rotation lying near the nose of the upper knife. The upper set collar is connected through a fixed axis parallel to the axis of rotation with a lower set collar for a common turning around the same axis of rotation. The lower set collar being provided for the attachment of a lower knife and serving as an auxiliary table for workpieces to be notched. The two knives have an equal minimum vertex of, for example, 30.degree. so that with a first working stroke of the ram in a first turning position of the upper and lower set collars and their knives, respectively, this minimum vertex may be notched into the workpieces lying on the auxiliary table and afterwards with a second working stroke of the ram this minimum vertex may be enlarged to any desired larger notching angle up to for example around 120.degree. in a second turning position of the knives.

  • Patent number: 4513502
Abstract: A cutting apparatus is described for cutting an opening in beverage cup lids. This is accomplished by providing a housing, with a slot for orienting and maintaining the lid in a proper cutting position. While the lid is properly held, a cutting assembly mounted inside the housing and containing a cutting blade is slid past the slot, excising that portion of the lid exposed therein. When the cut lid is placed on a beverage containing cup, the contents can be consumed directly through the opening produced by this invention.

  • Patent number: 4481848
Abstract: An improved corner shear machine including a recess which extends toward a ram across a table so that a tool assembly unit comprising a combination of a punch and a die is removably fitted into the recess. The die is firmly included in a die block and the punch is fixedly secured to a punch block, whereas the punch block is vertically displaceable toward or away from the die block with the aid of a pair of symmetrically located guide pins which stand from the latter at the rear part thereof. To allow the punch to resume the original position after completion of a shearing operation a resilient means is arranged in a suitable position in the tool assembly unit, and moreover to prevent a workpiece in the form of a sheet material from being raised up together with the punch after completion of the shearing operation a plurality of symmetrically located resilient means with stopper means fixedly secured to the lower end thereof are suspended from the punch block.

  • Patent number: 4446623
Abstract: A notching tool for forming notches in ridge- or hip-capping for roofs, the notches being formed to match the profile of the roofing sheets. The tool has a base with a pair of spaced feet which engage the ribs on the roofing sheets to align the tool. A notching head on the base has a replaceable die and punch pair, one of which is fixed to support the capping while the other is manually or power-operated to provide a shearing-type cutting action between the die and punch to cut the notches. Adjustable guides on the notching head support the capping for angular alignment between the capping and the notching head and for adjustment of the depth of the notch. The notching head may be pivotally and/or rotatably mounted on the base and the die and punch may be reversible.

Abstract: This invention provides a collar making apparatus having an integral notcher capable of forming a flat sheet of metal into a cylindrical collar. The notcher includes a stationary die and a ram mounted for reciprocation which includes a punch that cooperates with the die to stamp a notch in the sheet. The notcher further aligns a sheet to be punched and a control automatically operates the ram when a sheet is in the proper position for punching. From the notched sheet, the apparatus forms a channel along one side edge, forms the sheet into a circular configuration, and crimps the other side edge of the sheet.
