  • Patent number: 5065652
Abstract: A scroll saw has a base including integral walls forming a gear casing, a frame assembly mounted on the base, and lower and upper oscillating arm members pivotally mounted on the frame assembly. The gear casing houses gear and counterweight assemblies for driving and counterbalancing the oscillating motion of the lower and upper arm members. A saw blade is removably mounted between corresponding free ends of the lower and upper reciprocating arm members. The ends of the saw blade are prepositioned between a pair of blade holders, and the entire assembly of blade and blade holders is then attached as a unit to the free ends of the arm members. Blade tension is adjusted by means of a tensioning system that indexes blade tension to rotation of a tension knob. The saw further includes a nonflexible tube which functions as a combination airblaster and blade guard for directing an air stream into a cutting area to remove sawdust and other debris while preventing accidental contact with the saw blade.

  • Patent number: 4909115
Abstract: A band saw blade is loaded between pairs of guide wheels upon tensioning the blade by guiding the blade between pairs of spaced guide plates which define converging slots that converge toward the guide wheels. The approach is particularly useful in loading blades on underwater band saw machines used to cut radioactive materials.

  • Patent number: 4854208
Abstract: To cut a workpiece along two different cutting directions, the band saw teeth are set horizontally by a band saw guide device and then the cutting head (CH) is moved frontward, for instance; thereafter, the band saw teeth are twisted downward by the same guide device and then the cutting head is moved downward. The machine is effectively usable in cutting off a test piece from a large workpiece. To improve the cutting precession, various novel devices are incorporated, such as a balance cylinder (B-CYL) for allowing the cutting head to move up and down smoothly; two back-and-forth cylinders (BF-CYL) for moving the cutting head back and forth in symmetrical pressure application; cutting head fix device (FD); a rigid guide column; band saw holding device (BSH); a slidable small-diameter driven wheel arranged within the cutting head (CH), etc.

  • Patent number: 4763637
Abstract: A stone saw comprises a revolving sawing rope, a backing roller supporting the revolving sawing rope at each end of a sawing portion on one side of the sawing rope axis against cutting pressure exerted upon the sawing rope, the cutting pressure causing radial wear on the backing rollers, a feed drive for feeding the sawing rope in a revolving direction over the backing rollers, and housings supporting the backing rollers and pivotally adjustable about the sawing rope axis in dependence on the revolving direction of the sawing rope, the backing rollers being mounted in the housings transversely adjustably to the axes thereof and to the sawing rope axis. A clearance sensor is associated with, and radially spaced from, the backing roller for detecting the clearance between the sensor and the backing roller, the distance varying with the radial wear of the backing roller, the clearance sensor emitting a control signal corresponding to the detected clearance.

  • Patent number: 4597132
Abstract: A band saw wherein one of the pulleys for an endless band-like blade is movable toward and away from the other pulley to relax the tension upon or to tension the blade. The one pulley is permanently biased away from the other pulley by a relatively weak spring whose bias can be overcome by hand to facilitate the removal of a blade or the application of a fresh blade. In addition, the one pulley is normally biased away from the other pulley with a pronounced force by a package of dished springs whose bias upon the one pulley can be interrupted by a single-acting cylinder and piston unit whose piston is installed between the dished springs and a reciprocable carriage for the one pulley. The dished springs react against a support for the pulleys and bear against the piston.

  • Patent number: 4386545
Abstract: An elongated stamped sheet-metal slider member facilitates the alinement and support for the guiding pulley of a band saw. The slider member has several integrally-formed portions. A first portion depends within the housing, and the pulley is rotatably supported thereon about an axis substantially perpendicular thereto. A second portion of the slider member is bent away, forming an obtuse angle with the first portion, and extends through a slotted opening formed in the housing. This second portion has a pair of ears projecting laterally of the slotted opening for preventing the slider from passing completely into the housing. The ears have respective side edge portions engaging the outer surface of the housing and forming therebetween a fulcrum for pivotal movement of the slider member and hence the pulley about an axis which is above the pulley axis and transverse thereto. A jack screw is carried by the housing for engaging the first portion of the slider member below the pulley axis.

Abstract: A system for introducing "tensioning" stress distribution into the wide bandsaw blade without its plastic deformation, for automatically compensating for blade temperature expansions and blade manufacturing inaccuracies, and for controlling blade position on the bandsaw wheels, comprising: torsional loading of the back, noncutting section of the bandsaw blade by using two actuators acting as a couple; continuously sensing for a displacement of the bandsaw blade during sawing from a set position on the wheels and countering the adverse effect of such displacement by generating a corrective displacement in the opposite sense relative to the said set position through the change of the ratio of forces forming the said couple.

  • Patent number: 4204444
Abstract: A protective device for a band saw machine is secured to the guards which are normally found on such machines. The device extends downwardly from the guards to the plane of the table, on which the blocks to be cut are placed. The device encloses the band saw and prevents inadvertent contact therewith. The device comprises two members, a fixed member secured to the guard and a movable member secured to the fixed member. The movable member is locked to the fixed member. When a block contacts the device the movable member is released until the block has been cut. The movable member returns to the locked position after the block has been cut.
