  • Patent number: 8573106
Abstract: The portable sawmill is constructed on a frame having a series of mechanisms for loading and manipulating a log thereon and removing boards cut from the log. Powered tines load a log onto a vertically adjustable log deck, the deck including powered mechanisms for turning and securing the log in the desired orientation for cutting. Cuts are made by a horizontally traveling band saw. The saw has no vertical adjustment. Board thickness is determined by the height of the vertically adjustable log deck. Cut boards are removed by a board sweep that pushes the board laterally from the top of the log onto a tray. The saw travels along the tray to push the board longitudinally onto a suitable platform for transport. All of the above mechanisms are controlled hydraulically from a single operator station on the mill, thus freeing the operator from many manual tasks and increasing production.

The circular saws preferably include one vertical-swath blade and two vertically separately elevation-adjustable horizontal-swath blades. To one side of the tub, and along the substantial length of the frame, are a plurality of retractable support arms mounted on the frame at a height approximately equal to the elevation of the lateral conveyor at the highest elevation of the lift mechanism.

Abstract: An improved stump grinding machine includes a turntable assembly on which the engine is mounted for rotation in a horizontal plane. Preferably, the turntable assembly includes a flat plate element on which the engine is carried. One rotatable ring of a turntable bearing is connected to the plate element for rotation therewith. The other ring of the turntable bearing is fixedly connected to the machine frame. A grinding wheel is located at the distal end of an arm structure pivotally connected to the plate element. The grinding wheel is driven from the engine by a pair of successive belt stages. Power between the belt stages is transferred at an idler shaft about which the arm structure pivots. The stump grinding machine includes a hydraulic system to effect horizontal and vertical movement of the grinding wheel as necessary during a cutting operation. The stump grinding machine may be a self-propelled machine, or may be configured for towing behind a vehicle.

One (or both) of the side plates carries nozzles for emitting liquid dyes of different respective colors. Channels for conducting liquid dyes to the respective nozzles are formed by grooves cut in the interface between the middle plate and a side plate. Each channel is surrounded by a laser weld which completely isolates the channels from one another to avoid mixing the colors. The laser welds also secure the middle and side plates together. Additional laser welds secure the middle and side plates together, the additional laser welds being discontinuous.

Abstract: A shearing machine includes a generally hexagonal shearing blade and a generally rectangular shearing blade on each of an upper and a lower jaw. The hexagon forms a point at the forward end of the hexagonal shearing blade dividing a main shearing edge from an auxiliary shearing edge. A hexagonal edge at the rear of the hexagonal shearing blade forms a relief edge which unloads shearing forces to permit full shearing force to be directed to the rectangular shearing blade during a final stage of shearing a sheet of material. An end of the rectangle is preferably abutted to a portion of the relief edge, without provision for a gap or clearance therebetween. Embodiments are disclosed in which the shape of the shearing blade is non-hexagonal. In one disclosed embodiment, the shape of the shearing blade is non-polygonal, in that at least one edge is a curve.
