  • Patent number: 4084465
Abstract: A sugar cane planting machine for eliminating the excessive manual labor previously required to plant sugar cane stalks. The uncut stalks are loaded in the rear of a tractor-pulled cart at the bottom of which is positioned a conveyor-like belt for moving the cane towards the front of the cart. Slideably attached on a transversely positioned guide member of a pivotable frame at the front of the cart is a combination cross-cutting and kicker-chain assembly which moves laterally across the width of the cart under hydraulic controls. Said assemblies include a downwardly extending chain saw which is followed by at least one vertically disposed kicker-chain, both preferably under the control of a common motor. Below the kicker-chain assembly is positioned a trough or hopper having an opening formed along the bottom thereof.

  • Patent number: 4081009
Abstract: A tree cutting method and apparatus includes at least one shear blade having its tree contacting edge recessed to define a pair of spaced shearing edges with a fiber receiving groove therebetween. A fiber removing device is recessed within the groove out of contact with the solid wood of the tree and is preferably in the form of a driven endless fiber removing chain. As pressure is applied by the spaced shearing edges of shear projections of the blade against the tree, the fiber removing device removes the fibers that are fed into the groove. The removal of fibers greatly reduces the transverse force required by the shear blade to penetrate the tree or bole, and further reduces the resulting longitudinal shearing forces applied to the tree due to the longitudinal compression as the blade moves transversely through the tree thereby minimizing longitudinal splitting of the bole.

  • Patent number: 4044804
Abstract: A shearing device is disclosed for severing trees and the like. The device is vehicle mounted, preferably on the front of a tractor, so that forward movement of the tractor causes shearing of a tree in contact with the device. The device includes a frame member with a pair of forwardly extending spaced arms one of which has a pivot member mounted thereon, with the pivot member carrying a severing element that can be moved in an arc toward and away from the other arm of the frame member. A tree brought into contact with the severing element will be severed as the severing element is caused to move toward the other arm of the frame member due to continued forward movement of the vehicle. After a tree has been severed, the pivot member is preferably biased to automatically return to normal position near the end of the arms of the frame member with the severing element at least partially spanning the space between the arms.

  • Patent number: 4028974
Abstract: This invention provides an improved method and an improved apparatus for cutting bitumen cakes or like products from a sheet of the product previously cast in a flat-bottomed basin, during the cooling of the sheet. The cakes are cut out of strips previously cut out of said sheet. A transverse girder mounted on wheels span the basin, and suspended from the girder is a carriage supporting a pivoted heated cutter. As the cutter moves in the cutting direction it cuts a transverse strip of product and carries along a trolley provided with a wedge member adapted at the same time to raise the cut strip. The carriage also comprises a pusher arm whereby, during the return stroke of said carriage, said pusher arm can drive the fully cut strip towards another cutter of the guillotine type which cuts the cakes out of the strip. During the strip cutting step, the carriage also carries along a belt so as to insert the same under the strip as it is cut by said first cutter.
