Abstract: A portable HEPA filter chamber is provided with a pair of wheels and a handle whereby it can be moved by a person in the manner of a two-wheeled hand-truck. One or more inlet openings receive air from an area to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated. An air outlet is adaptable to the air inlet height of standard, widely-used carpet dryer blowers. Pre-filters are provided in the portable chamber upstream of the HEPA filter. Strapping holds the blower unit to the outlet of the filter chamber. Support wheels and a handle enable convenient hand-truck type operation to facilitate movement of the combination when and as needed in the area being dried. An upstanding perimeter flange, and the handle, when retracted, serve as a fence to stabilize multiple chambers, when stacked for storage or transportation in a truck. The exterior wall of the chamber is shaped for inter-fitting with others to minimize floor space for storage and transporting.

Abstract: In a process facility for producing semiconductor wafers, a third physical unit is configured between two physical units that produce mini environments. The third physical unit has a laminar flow at right angles to the laminar flows of the two physical units and is operated with a slightly higher flow velocity. According to the Bernoulli equation, the static pressure in the third physical unit is therefore lower than in the surrounding two physical units. Advantageously, therefore, no contamination from the more highly loaded one of the two physical units passes over into the lesser loaded one of the two physical units.

  • Publication number: 20030110946
Abstract: A system for removing contaminates from the air in a mail sorting room includes a vacuum unit and a filter, both of which may be located within this room. The vacuum unit creates a downwardly directed laminar flow of air which expels airborne particulates (e.g., anthrax spores) from the room. Prior to being expelled, the air is passed through a multi-stage filtration unit which includes a HEPA filter and optionally a carbon V.O.C. filter for removing chemical agents. The mail sorting room preferably has a modular construction with removable walls, a ceiling, and a floor. The walls may be transparent or opaque. An air lock room may be attached to the mail sorting room to prevent air from the sorting room from accidentally escaping. A cleaning device may be included in the sorting room for individually cleaning the mail. This cleaning device may be connected to a conveyor which automatically advances the mail for cleaning.

Abstract: A common structure, such as a home or other building, equipped with an apparatus, comprised of a positive pressure ventilator and a decontaminator device, can be immediately converted into a safe area for human inhabitants, machines, and materials, against chemical or biological attack. The apparatus takes in outside contaminated air, destroys and/or removes the biological or chemical agent, renders the air breathable, and forces the now decontaminated air into the structure. The structure is slightly pressurized with decontaminated air, causing positive and continuous outflow preventing contaminated air from entering the structure. The invention includes the apparatus, the method of positive pressure for preventing the entry of harmful agents, and kits and methods for further rendering a conventional structure into a safe area.

  • Publication number: 20030097934
Abstract: A particle trap, such as in a honeycomb body, for separating particles out of an exhaust gas flow, includes a flow channel. An exhaust gas flow which includes particles flows through the flow channel. Internals, such as projections, humps, protuberances or the like are situated on one side of the flow channel. An opposite region of a channel wall is completely or partially porous. When a flow of exhaust gas which includes particles flows through the particle trap, the particles are diverted toward the porous channel wall, to which they adhere. They can then be removed again by regeneration. The particle trap and an associated process for separating particles out of an exhaust gas flow, are particularly advantageous when used in the exhaust system of an internal-combustion engine, in particular a diesel engine, specifically and advantageously in combination with a soot filter.

Abstract: A germicidal method and apparatus for destroying airborne pathogenic bacteria such as tuberculosis bacteria using ultraviolet light. Air is drawn through a filter and into a sterilization chamber that is irradiated with ultraviolet light, and out through an exhaust opening. Consideration for the characteristics of the room in which the apparatus is installed and the positioning of the installation allows effective prevention of transmission of disease through expectoration and inhalation of airborne microdroplets of bacteria-containing sputum. The filter is of the low-density type which traps large particulates, but not small particulates of the size of the microdroplets, so that the filter does not become a bacteria colonization site. Baffles on the air intake opening and air exhaust opening to prevent ultraviolet light from escaping into the environment. The sterilization chamber is constructed such that the air passes the ultraviolet light bulbs twice as it circulates therethrough.

Abstract: An integrated environmental control (IEC) system includes a decontamination Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) system in which a contaminated decontamination bed is purged through a purge exhaust duct and subsequently dumped overboard through a purge ejector. The energy from a high pressure drain duct serves as the primary motive force for the purge ejector to create a sub-atmospheric region therein and reduce back pressure upon the PSA filtration system. The reduced back pressure creates additional pressure drop across the PSA filtration system which improves performance. Risk of the purge exhaust duct and the purge ejector freezing in a low temperature environment is further minimized by mixing the purge exhaust with the relatively warmer high pressure drains.

Abstract: Exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine operating with leaded or unleaded gasoline or diesel or natural gas, are used for energizing a high-speed gas turbine. The convoluting gas discharge causes a first separation stage by stratifying of heavier and lighter exhaust gas components that exit from the turbine in opposite directions, the heavier components having a second stratifying separation in a vortex tube to separate combustible pollutants from non-combustible components. The non-combustible components exit a vortex tube open end to atmosphere. The lighter combustible, pollutants effected in the first separation are bubbled through a sodium hydroxide solution for dissolving the nitric oxide, formaldehyde impurities in this gas stream before being piped to the engine air intake for re-combustion, thereby reducing the engine's exhaust pollution and improving its fuel economy. The combustible, heavier pollutants from the second separation stage are piped to air filter assemblies.
