  • Patent number: 4831690
Abstract: A handle for attachment to a carton to facilitate carrying the carton. The elongated handle has the upper end of the leg portion of each of two L-shaped members connected to the same end of the handle so each foot portion of the members projects parallel to the handle. The tip of each of the feet is sharpened to facilitate puncturing the carton. The members are pivotally connected to the handle to allow the members to be collapsed. The sharpened tip of each foot portion tapers downwardly and rearwardly from the end to meet the lower portion of the foot portion at a rocker area about which the foot portion can rock to lower the junction of the foot and leg portions of each member toward the carton after the carton surface has been punctured. This allows the foot portions to run between the surfaces of corrugated cardboard.

  • Patent number: 4822283
Abstract: Progressively smaller pieces can be connected to the largest piece to aid in semantic mapping of an informative passage, for example. Legends can be applied to the pieces (and can be wiped off later). The pieces can be connected mechanically or magnetically. The mechanical connections can be different shapes to limit connection of a piece to the next larger piece. Similarly, the pieces can be magnetized to achieve the same end. The perimeter of each piece can be color coded to indicate the color of the proper piece to be connected to the perimeter.

  • Patent number: 4814086
Abstract: Either of the two relatively large capacity tanks can be connected in a high pressure loop or system including a reverse osmosis membrane vessel and a circulating pump. When the pressure is high enough in this loop, product is drawn from the vessel. A feed pump supplies fluid to the tank not in the high pressure system for flushing that tank. The feed pump also supplies fluid to the input of a high pressure pump which provides make-up fluid to the high pressure system at a pressure sufficient to sustain reverse osmosis. The tanks are interchanged periodically. This system only has to provide high pressure fluid at a rate equivalent to the rate of withdrawal of product from the system.

  • Patent number: 4773574
Abstract: The pack frame has first and second rectangular frames pivotally interconnected to allow the frames to be opened to the limit imposed by a fabric seat mounted between the top members. A safety strap connects the bottom frame members to act as a back-up limit on separation of the frames. The frames can be collapsed or folded and carried by shoulder straps connected to one of the frames at the top cross member and to the sides of the frame below the pivot. An optional backrest is fixed to the one frame to serve to support cargo when the frames are used as a backpack or to pivot, by removal of one of two mounting pins on each side to a lowered position, or to serve as a backrest when the seat is used. Optional side cargo bags are mounted to the pivot pins and are connected to each other by a strap passing over the seat. The invention also provides a spliced joint for each rectangular frame in the medial portion of the lower cross member.

  • Patent number: 4771263
Abstract: The variable resistance speed control switch for a power tool has a wiper which slides over a resistor which has a non-linear resistance curve matched to the motor. The resistor is made by thick film technology and has a ceramic substrate covered by 950.degree. C. glass and fired to give the substate a glass smooth surface. Then a 100K ohm ink is applied in a pattern designed to give a non-linear resistance curve tailored to the performance of the motor. A resistive termination is provided to diffuse the power concentation under the stationary contact. A 1 meg ohm ink covers the 100K layer and part of the terminaton. The 1 meg ink contains a lot a glass which fuses and flows out when fired. The 1 meg ink will flow out to the same glass smooth condition as the glass bottom layer. The wipers are not subject to much abrasion or wear.

  • Patent number: 4770073
Abstract: A push-on/quick release locking arrangement is mounted on a socket wrench extension or driver having a cylindrical body with a square drive end. An inclined transverse bore in the drive end intersects opposed flat faces of the drive end and lock balls are mounted in the bore for movement between a "lock" position and a "release" position. In the "lock" position one ball projects from the end of the bore nearest the end of the drive end to engage a cooperating cavity in the drive recess of a socket. In the "release" position the balls lie within the cross section of the drive end. There is an axial groove in the flat face intersected by the end of said bore further from the end of the drive end. A cylindrical grip sleeve is mounted for slideable movement on the cylindrical body of the extension. The end of said sleeve remote from the drive end is turned inwardly and an integral control tab projects from the other end of the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4744900
Abstract: The reverse osmosis membrane is mounted inside a tubular container and has a central passage which connects at each end to a central conduit in the associated end cap. One conduit is plugged and the other is the clear product outlet. Sea or brackish water enters an inlet in one end cap and passes through the membrane to leave via an outlet in the other end cap. The end cap in the inlet end of the container is sealed with respect to the container so sea water must flow through the RO membrane rather than between the membrane and the container. The other end cap is not so sealed and outlet sea water can flow into the space between the RO member and the tubular container. A very small bleed hole allows inlet sea water to by-pass the RO member and flow from the inlet into the space between the member and the container. The low volume flow flushes the space to prevent build-up of algae and the like.

  • Patent number: 4745063
Abstract: Substantially pure chymosin is separated from rennet extracts by contacting a liquid extract with an anionic exchange medium, preferably a diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) cellulose resin packed in a liquid chromatographic column, either as a static bed or stirred bed. The rennet extract and resin are conditioned so that the resin selectively binds pepsin and chymosin passes through the resin bed and is recovered from the liquid extract from the column. The bound pepsin is periodically removed from the resin by passing a suitable eluant through the resin bed.

  • Patent number: 4691683
Abstract: The bow string release has a sear pivotally mounted in a cylindrical body and includes a string retaining finger which projects across the string receiving notch when the sear is engaged by a pull pin biased to the sear engaging position, the pull pin is slideable in a guide sleeve rotatably mounted in the end wall of the body to which it is coupled. A handle is rotatably mounted on said sleeve and carries a trigger through which the pull pin passes. When the trigger is actuated it rocks about its point of engagement with a washer to push another washer against an enlarged head on the end of the pin to pull the pin to release the sear. In one embodiment a screw in the handle and bearing on the trigger can be adjusted to "partly actuate" the trigger to adjust the stroke necessary to release the bow string. In a second embodiment a screw moves the enlarged head relative to the thrust washer to partly pull the pin for the same purpose.

  • Patent number: 4688975
Abstract: The power tool has a magnetic base with superposed permanent magnet assemblies. The upper assembly can be moved relative to the lower assembly to subtract from or reinforce the magnetic field. When the sensing probe is pushed into the base the electric motor can be switched on to rotate a spindle on which a rotary cutting tool is axially mounted. The tool feed is controlled by a handle which can be mounted on either side of the tool housing. A coolant reservoir on the base has a hose connected to a pump which is connected to a manifold supplying coolant to the center of the cutting tool. The cutting tool is biased upwardly and pinches off the coolant when the tool is raised from the work. The tubular tool shank is retained on the drive spindle by balls carried by a cage and moved into engagement with a groove in the tool shank by a cam surface on a release collar spring biased to move the balls to engage the tool.

  • Patent number: 4682918
Abstract: A keyless chuck for a power drill having a drive spindle projecting from the drill housing. The chuck body is fixed on and rotatable with the spindle and has a plurality of jaws mounted for movement on axes inclined with respect to the spindle axis. The collar is mounted for rotation with and with respect to said body and has a split nut connected to the jaws to move them on said axes to grip or release a tool shank when there is relative rotation between said collar and said body. A ring is splined on the housing and is spring biased toward the housing. The ring is manually movable toward the collar to bring the axially projecting lugs on the ring in engagement with lugs on the collar to retard the collar from rotating which causes relative rotation between the body and the collar when the body is rotated. Inclined faces on the lugs force the lugs apart when movement of the jaws is prevented and the lugs cause an impacting action to overcome static friction.

  • Patent number: 4676701
Abstract: Cutting teeth around the lower edge of an inverted cup-like cutter cut a circular kerf resulting in a circular slug being cut from the material being worked on. The proximal end of a retainer is fixed centrally of the cutter and the distal end projects beyond the plane of the teeth so the resilient tab means on the distal end can be deflected inwardly towards the longitudinal axis of the retainer as the retainer passes through a pilot hole in the material. The tabs engage the underside of the material when the retainer has been passed through the pilot hole and enable removal of the slug through the hole cut by the cutter.

  • Patent number: 4674469
Abstract: The bow string release has a body having a notch receiving a string which is retained by a pivoted sear capturing the string. The body is connected to a handle. A thrust bearing is located between the body and the handle, allowing the body and the handle to rotate relative to one another. A spring loaded plunger latches the sear to retain the string until the plunger is moved back by a trigger pivotally connected to the handle. A spring is compressed between the plunger head and a seat which can be adjusted to alter the trigger pull force. The trigger stroke is adjusted by the screw in the trigger adjustably engaging the hole in the wall of the release handle. Another embodiment has provision for triggering the release of a spring loaded piston which strikes the plunger to release the sear. A further embodiment uses a small solenoid in the handle to move the plunger to release the sear.

  • Patent number: 4665712
Abstract: A condenser receives hot compressed refrigerant from the heat pump compressor and transfers heat to water in water heater, refrigerant flows from the condenser through a pressure reducer to an evaporator coil in which baffles define first and second air flow paths across the coil parallel to the coil gradient. In one path the temperature of air flowing across the coil is reduced while the air gives up heat to the refrigerant. The other air flow path heats air passing across the coil. A multiplicity of pressure reducers are provided in the coil to progressively drop the temperature of the refrigerant from one end of the coil to the other. A supplemental coil can be used in conjunction with the second air flow path to heat air further. The supplemental coil may receive hot refrigerant directly from the condenser.
