  • Patent number: 8352600
Abstract: A system and method for substantially preventing firewall generated communication losses in regard to communications by authorized users in a managed computer network system is provided. The method comprises transmitting one or more status inquiry commands to at least one node in the managed computer network system, wherein the status inquiry command requests a first quantity of objects from the at least one node; receiving a non-zero quantity of objects response from the at least one node; and limiting communications through the firewall in the managed computer network system with the at least one node to a message size substantially equivalent to the received non-zero quantity of objects response from the at least one node, thereby substantially preventing firewall generated communication losses in the managed computer network system.

  • Patent number: 8351633
Abstract: Various exemplary embodiments are a noise-cancelling microphone housing including a body and a round wind shield member having a round depression in the end facing away from the body. The body is sized such that at least one microphone element will fit inside. The wind shield member is positioned such that in the course of normal use, wind directed toward the microphone will be intercepted and deflected by the wind-shield element. Deflecting wind away from the noise-cancelling microphone allows the microphone to produce a high-quality signal in spite of heavy winds. Various embodiments may also include a cover made of noise-damping material and/or holes through at least one face of the housing such that sound may pass through and reach the interior where the microphones are located.

  • Patent number: 8340105
Abstract: A method and system of coordination independent rate adaptation is disclosed. The method and system of coordination independent rate adaptation provides for deploying a rate adaptation subdomain into a packet network having no rate adaptation coordination among the network nodes. The method and system is particularly useful for incremental introduction of rate-adaptive devices in existing networks; combining the best properties of sleep-state exploitation and rate scaling techniques by defining a class of state-setting policies for rate adaptation schemes that enforce tight deterministic bounds on the extra delay that the schemes may cause to network traffic at every node where they are deployed.

  • Patent number: 8329468
Abstract: An innovative method of collecting cord blood stem cells from an isolated mammalian non-exsanguinated or partially exsanguinated placenta by placental perfusion is described and also an easy method for safe long duration cold storage of the placenta. Placental perfusion can include perfusing the isolated placenta with a pulsatile flow of perfusion solution, for example, using a pulsatile or peristaltic pump or device. The stem cells can then be isolated from the perfusate. Significantly increased amounts of CD133+ stem cells can be collected from the perfusate. The perfusion solution can include an anticoagulant. The isolated mammalian placenta need not be treated with an anticoagulant prior to perfusing. The isolated placenta can be free from an anticoagulant prior to perfusing.

  • Patent number: 8315951
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for providing authentication of an e-commerce server to a user engaging in e-commerce transactions. When the user begins an e-commerce session, the e-commerce server requests an authentication token from an authentication proxy with which it has registered. If the authentication proxy recognizes the e-commerce server, the authentication proxy generates an authentication token in the form of a simple image, and sends the authentication token to the e-commerce server over a trusted path. The e-commerce server sends the authentication token to the user. The authentication proxy also sends a copy of the authentication token to the user over a second trusted path to a second device or application accessible by the user. The user can then see that the authentication token presented by the e-commerce server matches the authentication token presented by the authentication proxy.

  • Patent number: RE43809
Abstract: A system and method are provided for allowing users to verify the presence of personal items. RFID tags are attached to personal items, and the items are entered into a list. The user makes travel lists from the list of items. When traveling, the user queries the system to determine whether all personal items in the travel list are within range of the system. The system checks for the presence of the RFID tags associated with the items in the travel list. If any RFIDs are not present, the user is alerted. Optionally, the system updates the last known location of items whenever checking for the presence of personal items, so that if an item is not found the user can determine where the item was last known to have been.
