  • Patent number: 8193741
Abstract: Various embodiments relate to an light-emitting diode (LED) driver and related method that drives various LEDs in an LED string beyond their isolated nominal luminance. Individual LEDs in an LED string may be thermally dependent so that specific LEDs may operate at higher temperatures without degradation. This may include driving specific LEDs beyond isolated nominal luminance when associated LEDs dim below their isolated nominal luminance. Such operation allows the LED to receive higher amounts of current and therefore exhibit higher luminous intensity. A control circuit may monitor the forward voltage and temperature in a feedback loop to ensure that the LEDs in the string are operating below a defined maximum junction temperature. The control circuit may signal a processing unit to adjust adjacent circuits to compensate when the controlled LEDs cannot produce a requested luminance without operating beyond a maximum junction temperature.

  • Patent number: 8189117
Abstract: In a receiver, a synchronization circuit (MIX2, OSC, C1, R1) provides a set of oscillator signals (OSI, OSQ) that are synchronized with a carrier of an amplitude-modulated signal. The set of oscillator signals (OSI, OSQ) comprises a quadrature oscillator signal (OSQ), which is substantially 90° phase shifted with respect to the carrier of the amplitude-modulated signal. A quadrature mixer (MIX2) mixes the quadrature oscillator signal (OSQ) with the amplitude-modulated signal so as to obtain a quadrature mixer output signal (MO2a). A phase-error corrector (PEC) adjusts the phase of the oscillator signals in response to a variation in the magnitude of an alternating current component (AC) in the quadrature mixer output signal (MO2a).

  • Patent number: 8183971
Abstract: In a first aspect, the invention provides to a device comprising a substrate and an electrical conductor arranged between two terminals (A, B) and shaped for forming an inductor comprising at least two loops (1, 2) and arranged such that, at least locally, the far field is reduced. This arrangement results in an inductor which radiates a smaller magnetic field, also referred to as reduced EMI, which results in less noise generated in other inductive parts of an electronic circuit or system. The invention further provides in an advantageous embodiment proper balancing of the parasitic resistance and capacitance. By doing so the physical mid-point of 8-shaped inductors becomes the electrical mid-point (MP) which is beneficial when the inductor is used in a circuit.

  • Patent number: 8179846
Abstract: Based on application information received from a DPI device, a downstream device, such as a Radio Network Controller (RNC), optimally implements a dormancy timer policy for short-lived applications, such as email and MMS. In particular, the RNC may initially use a large value for the dormancy timer for these applications. When the RNC receives an indication of the end of the application from the DPI device, the RNC may terminate the connection, thereby immediately freeing up resources. Alternatively, should the DPI device fail to recognize the end of the application, the initial dormancy timer serves as a fail-safe, such that the radio network resources are still released for allocation to another device in the radio network.

  • Patent number: 8159941
Abstract: In various exemplary embodiments, a Deep Packet Inspection device is integrated into a provider edge router associated with a user agent client or provided externally. The DPI device monitors the exchange of packets between an originating proxy and a user agent client and inspects the packets to identify SIP control messages. By monitoring the messages exchanged between the two devices, the DPI device may determine the type of application, desired QoS, source, destination, and other information related to the connection. Using this information, the router may then access a policy database to determine whether there is a QoS policy for the application and/or user. Based on this determination, the router may initiate network reservation for an anticipated data flow or store the information so the flow of packets can be remarked as the packets arrive. Accordingly, in various exemplary embodiments, the edge router is aware that QoS should be granted.

  • Patent number: 8134848
Abstract: A system and method for closed-loop efficiency modulation for an AC/DC power system is provided. A boost-buck converter and a DC/DC converter connected in series receive a rectified DC feed signal from a AC input signal and deliver a modified DC output to an active load. A controller receives power data at various stages of the system and uses that data to modify a series of trim voltages provided to the feedback inputs of the respective converters to modify each converters output voltage. The controller modifies each converter's output voltage to maximize power efficiency while monitoring other data in the system to ensure the system is operating correctly and safely.

  • Patent number: 8130649
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide flow control of incoming data packets to data processing resources via a controller that can receive and react to advanced backpressure messages. These advanced backpressure messages are used to rate limit the data packets based one or more of the following factors: traffic class, traffic priority, destination port. The controller can also generate a traffic preference message to an upstream source of the data packets to inform the upstream unit of the most appropriate type of data that should be transmitted downstream at that time, thereby improving the likelihood of the transmitted data being processed in a proper and timely manner by the downstream data processing resources. Embodiments of the invention can improve the performance of a communications system during periods of congestion by ensuring that high-priority traffic has precedence over traffic of lower priority while maximizing utilization of the ingress data path bandwidth.
