  • Patent number: 6891782
Abstract: Push-pull signal is created on the basis of reflected-light detection signals output from four divided light receiving elements that receive a reflection of a recording laser light beam off an optical disk. The push-pull signal is sent to a gain variation circuit. The push-pull signal is normalized by setting the gain of the gain variation circuit to a low level in response to a mark forming section of a recording signal, but to a high level in response to a blank forming section of the recording signal. Wobble detection and pre-pit detection are performed on the basis of the normalized push-pull signal.

  • Patent number: 6887255
Abstract: A laparoscopic surgical extraction port (LSEP) includes a port having a radially-enlarged distal end. A sheath having a plurality of circumferentially-spaced prongs is slidingly mounted onto the port. With the prongs contracted radially-inwardly and the LSEP in its contracted position, a surgeon inserts the LSEP into a patient's abdominal cavity through an incision. The surgeon then expands the LSEP by pulling the port rearwardly such that the radially-enlarged distal end expands the prongs radially-outwardly. The surgeon then positions a specimen and endo-bag in the funnel formed by the expanded prongs. The specimen, endo-bag, and prongs are thereafter simultaneously extracted through the incision. A radially-inward force that is applied to the prongs by the incision substantially prevents the specimen from bunching or rupturing during the extraction process.

  • Patent number: 6888871
Abstract: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) device with improved power and beam characteristics. The VCSEL device contains one VCSEL or an array of VCSELs. Each VCSEL has a corresponding integrated microlens, and a heat sink is attached to the device side of the VCSEL device. The heat sink allows improved heat dissipation, and therefore provides improved power characteristics of the VCSEL device output laser beam. The microlens or microlens array allows easier and more compact focussing of the VCSEL device output laser beam. The VCSEL device can be used in a variety of optical systems, and its improved power and focusing characteristics provide a compact, low power, low cost laser system.

  • Patent number: 6888886
Abstract: Serially transmitted digital data are received in a predetermined format such as an SPDIF format. In the format, identification data are incorporated in the serial data in predetermined cycles. Generation of a train of bit-extracting pulses having a predetermined pulse generation pattern is triggered by detection of a pulse edge of the received serial data. By counting the bit-extracting pulses, bit location information is generated which identifies each bit location in the received serial data. Each identification data is detected from among the received digital data and the number of detections of the identification data within a predetermined time period is calculated, so as to identify a transmission rate of the digital data on the basis of the number of detections.

  • Patent number: 6888838
Abstract: A novel compression method uses bitmaps to reduce the memory storage requirement of routing table information to about 3 MB. The data structure can be used for both route lookup and update. It does not require a separate data structure to be used for route update. A fast route lookup method is also disclosed. An efficient update method supports incremental route update. Through configuring a processor properly and developing a few customized instructions specifically for route lookup, the system can achieve more than 10 million lookups per second (MLPS) at 200 MHz. Using a configurable processor for route lookup/update provides more flexibility and extensibility which supports different data structures and lookup/update methods to meet application specific needs. The data structure and lookup method can be implemented in pure hardware in a pipelined fashion to achieve approximately 100 MLPS.

  • Patent number: 6889115
Abstract: A position control apparatus and method has been devised which provides for an improved means of suppressing tracking error from a variable position reference occurring when a control object positioned via a transmission mechanism with mechanical transmission error resumes movement from a state stopped at a target position. A selection between two alternative tracking error compensating means within the control apparatus is made based on whether the detected position of the control object changes in a period after the control object stops and before the variable position reference is input again to a control deviation generating unit.
