  • Patent number: 6149632
Abstract: A self-sealing needle injection hub has two resilient, elastomeric sealing members mounted adjacent one another in a housing, both having pierced passages through which a needle can be inserted. The outer member is thick and relatively rigid; the inner member is thinner and flexible. Both members are radially compressed by the housing, the inner member bowing away from the outer member at its center. The action of withdrawing a needle from the hub, combined with the pressure of blood on the inner member, maintains the inner member flat against the outer member, thereby further compressing the passage through the inner member.

  • Patent number: 6148870
Abstract: A weaving machine arrangement incorporates a shaft frame machine and, arranged on both sides thereof, two Jacquard machines. The weaving machine arrangement is coordinated, and first warp threads for the woven material are obtained from the shaft frame weaving machine and second warp threads from the Jacquard machines. The second warp threads are used to form spread-out turnover fold areas in the tubular material. The Jacquard machines form patterns for the closing locations of the weft threads in the turnover fold areas. By using spread-out turnover fold areas and spreading the closing locations of the weft threads in these areas, high-strength piecing functions are obtained in the tubular weave.

  • Patent number: 6146229
Abstract: A photocathode device for use in an image intensifier, fabricated with a photoemissive semiconductor wafer having an active cathode layer which includes a central region of a first predetermined height surrounded by a peripheral region of a second predetermined height. The first predetermined height of the central region is configured to be greater than the second predetermined height of the peripheral region in order to create a recessed contact structure which is less likely to have unwanted emission points. A layer of conductive material covers the peripheral region to provide an electrical contact to the photocathode device. A layer of insulating material covers the layer of conductive material in order to protect the contact layer from being damage during handling operations.

  • Patent number: 6139750
Abstract: A desalination plant is disclosed which includes a pump for pumping water at a pressure of between 50 and 65 Bar to a generally cylindrical filter element which includes a plurality of reverse osmosis membranes defining salt passages. Immediately upstream of the filter element there is a disc with a plurality of holes in it. The disc forms an obstruction which causes a pressure drop between the upstream side thereof and the downstream side. It also divides the water flow into a series of separate streams which impinge on the end of the filter element and flow into the salt passages. The water downstream of the obstruction is not only at a lower pressure than the water upstream of the obstruction but also is flowing turbulently. The disc and filter element are in a cylindrical casing. The brine which emerges from the filter element, and which is still at a substantial pressure, can be fed through a device such as a Pelton wheel to recover some of the residual energy therefrom.

  • Patent number: 6135060
Abstract: An animal training device which is worn around the neck of an animal to apply at least one of an impulse wave and vibration to the animal. A transmission microprocessor performs an arithmetic operation with respect to security code number data, impulse wave level data and mode data and outputs a control signal containing the security code number data, impulse wave level data and mode data, as a result of the arithmetic operation. The control signal from the transmission microprocessor is modulated at a carrier wave and transmitted in the form of a radio signal through a transmitting antenna. The transmitted radio signal is received at a receiving antenna and demodulated for detection of the control signal therefrom. A reception microprocessor receives the detected control signal and checks whether the security code number data in the received control signal is the same as pre-stored security code number data.

  • Patent number: 6131535
Abstract: A method of controlling the operation of an animal training device which is worn around the neck of an animal to apply at least one of an impulse wave and vibration to the animal. Upon pushing a first function switch under the condition that a security code number is set by a security code setting unit, the level of the impulse wave to be applied to the animal is set by a volume adjustment unit and a mode selector is set to any one of a vibration position, vibration/impulse wave position, impulse wave position, a receiver receives a radio signal containing such data and thus applies at least one of the vibration and impulse wave to the animal to train it. Further, the volume adjustment unit employs a variable resistor which can finitely adjust the impulse wave level. Therefore, only a vibration or a low-level impulse wave can be applied to an animal over-sensitive to an electrical stimulation to readily train it.

  • Patent number: 6128887
Abstract: In a method for packaging flat articles, articles are brought in a continuous stack (P) along a support level to a grouping station so that their planes are upright from the support level, wherein product batches to be placed in a package, such as a box, are separated from the stack by an automatic grouping device. For grouping articles having different thicknesses at different ends in the direction of their plane, a stack portion (OP) is separated from the stack, the stack portion is gripped by a gripping device, and it is rotated around one axis so that its direction deviates from the original. The first stack portions (OP) so rotated are placed next to such second stack portions, whose directions in relation to said one axis deviate 180.degree. from the direction of the first stack portions, and the first and second stack portion so placed next to each other are formed to the product batch to be placed in the package.
