  • Patent number: 10623108
Abstract: A skew compensation apparatus and method. In an optical system that uses optical signals, skew may be generated as the optical signals are processed from an input optical signal to at least two electrical signals representative of the phase-differentiated optical signals. A compensation of the skew is provided by including an optical delay line in the path of the optical signal that does not suffer the skew (e.g., that serves as the time base for the skew measurement). The optical delay line introduces a delay Tskew equal to the delay suffered by the optical signal that is not taken as the time base. The two signals are thereby corrected for skew.

  • Patent number: 10594404
Abstract: Described are various embodiments of a dual optical modulator, system and method. In one embodiment, an optical modulator modulates an input optical signal having a designated optical frequency. The modulator comprises first and second tunable modulators operable around the optical frequency and operatively disposed between a bus waveguide path and an opposed waveguide path. The modulator further comprises a relative optical phase-shifter optically coupled between the tunable modulators so to impart a relative optical phase shift between the bus waveguide path and the opposed waveguide path. The tunable modulators are respectively driveable to modulate a respective resonance thereof in complimentary directions relative to the optical frequency and thereby resonantly redirect a selectable portion of the input optical signal along the opposed waveguide path such that the relative optical phase shift is imparted thereto for output.

  • Patent number: 10578801
Abstract: A SOI bent taper structure is used as a mode convertor. By tuning the widths of the bent taper and the bend angles, almost lossless mode conversion is realized between TE0 and TE1 in a silicon waveguide. The simulated loss is <0.05 dB across C-band. This bent taper can be combined with bi-layer TM0-TE1 rotator to reach very high efficient TM0-TE0 polarization rotator. An ultra-compact (9 ?m) bi-layer TM0-TE1 taper based on particle swarm optimization is demonstrated. The entire TM0-TE0 rotator has a loss <0.25 dB and polarization extinction ratio >25 dB, worst-case across the C-band.

  • Patent number: 10567087
Abstract: An optical IQ demodulator that does not require a power-consuming DSP is disclosed. A DC offset is added to one of the I and Q optical signal components at an IQ transmitter. After mixing with an LO signal and differential detection at the receiver, this DC offset results in a heterodyne-frequency tone in each of the quadrature detection channels of the receiver. The phase of this oscillation is recovered using a PLL circuit, which output is used to separate the transmitter I and Q channels for decoding thereof using conventional electronics.

  • Patent number: 10545288
Abstract: A low loss high extinction ratio on-chip polarizer is disclosed. The polarizer is formed of a mode convertor followed by a mode squeezer and a dump waveguide, and may be configured to pass a desired waveguide mode and reject undesired modes. An embodiment is described that transmits a TE0 mode while blocking a TM0 mode by converting it into a higher-order TEn mode in a waveguide taper, squeezing out the TEn mode in a second waveguide taper to lessen its confinement, and then dumping the TEn mode in a waveguide bend that is configured to pass the TE0 mode.

  • Patent number: 10536222
Abstract: An electrical circuit and method for de-modulation and carrier recovery of PSK modulated carrier signals in analog domain are described. A portion of the received PSK-modulated carrier signal is passed through a signal multiplication circuit to obtain a frequency-multiplied carrier that is absent of the PSK modulation, which is then passed through a frequency dividing circuit to obtain a reference carrier at the received carrier frequency. The reference signal is then mixed with the received PSK-modulated carrier signal to obtain a de-modulated baseband signal. The method may be used in heterodyne receivers of optical BPSK and QPSK signals.

  • Patent number: 10530485
Abstract: A high data rate, high sensitivity, low power optical link using low-bandwidth components and low-bandwidth E/O drivers and receivers and method of building same. The method is based on the idea of making the optical part of the link look like a bandwidth limited lossy electrical channel, so that the powerful equalization methods used in the wireline electrical links can be applied to recover the transmitted data in a situation with low bandwidth and/or high loss and strong inter-symbol interference. Linear and non-linear optical channel components, E/O drivers and receivers can benefit from the apparatus and the methods of the invention.

  • Patent number: 10530126
Abstract: Practical silicon-based light sources are still missing, despite the progress in germanium lasers, because both silicon and germanium are indirect-band semiconductors and inefficient at light generation. A tunable and single mode external cavity laser comprising: a gain medium for generating light between a reflective surface at one end of the gain medium; and a wavelength selective reflector at the other end of a laser cavity. A splitter disposed in the laser cavity includes an input port optically coupled to the gain medium, an input/output port optically coupled to the wavelength selective reflector, and an output port for outputting laser light at selected wavelengths. The wavelength selective reflector reflects light of one or more selected periodic wavelengths back to the gain medium via the input/output port, and passes light of non-selected wavelengths out of the laser cavity.

  • Patent number: 10527793
Abstract: When routing light on photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chips optical back-reflection and scattering can be highly detrimental to the desired application. Unused ports of optical devices, such as MMI, DC, Y-junction, PD, etc. are a cause for back-reflection and scattering, whereby the scattered light could get picked up by adjacent components, e.g. photodetectors. Management of stray light on the PIC is needed to prevent the undesired coupling between various components and to reduce noise. A dump taper may be used to guide and scatter stray light away from sensitive components or fully absorb the light while maintaining very low reflection from the taper. A doped dump taper may be used to passively absorb light reaching the unused port, thereby eliminating unwanted reflection and scattering. Alternatively, an undoped taper may be used to scatter light away from sensitive components while maintaining very low back-reflection.

  • Patent number: 10509295
Abstract: An optical waveguide modulator with automatic bias control is disclosed. A dither signal is applied to the modulator bias and its signature detected in light tapped from an output of the modulator using a phase sensitive dither detector such as a lock-in amplifier. The detected signal is processed using pre-recorded information defining the direction of the detected signal change relative to a change in the modulator bias, and the bias is adjusted in the direction determined using the information. An IQ bias of a quadrature modulator is controlled by dithering bias settings of two inner modulators at different dither frequencies, and detecting an oscillation at a sum frequency.
